HandBrake converts your video file; it does not broadcast or loop it live. To put that converted video on YouTube Live, export a compatible file, add it to OBS Studio as a looping Media Source, and stream from OBS using YouTube’s live encoder settings. Test your real upload connection before choosing a stream quality—available speeds vary by location and ISP.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake prepares a video file on your device. OBS Studio plays that file and sends the live feed to YouTube. In OBS, the Media Source’s Loop property restarts playback when it finishes. HandBrake alone cannot send a continuous live stream.
The conversion and live-stream settings are separate. HandBrake controls the exported file’s format, resolution, frame rate and audio; OBS controls the live encoder output sent to YouTube. YouTube’s recommended live bitrate is not a HandBrake export target.
Convert the video in HandBrake
1. Download HandBrake from an official source
Get HandBrake from the official downloads page. The HandBrake team identifies handbrake.fr, its GitHub project and Flathub as official download locations. The page listed version 1.11.2 as current when checked; versions can change, so check the page for the current release. HandBrake is free and runs locally without an account.

2. Open your source and choose a preset
Open the source video in HandBrake. Its default Fast 1080p30 preset is described as a good beginner starting point. For a YouTube-oriented export, current Creator presets use MP4, H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, and are described as suitable for video-hosting services including YouTube. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit both the source and the live stream you intend to send. A preset may downscale resolution or limit frame rate; it does not necessarily preserve the source’s original properties. Higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if your upload connection cannot sustain the separate live stream.
3. Inspect the export before encoding
- Dimensions: Check that the output resolution is the one you intend to play.
- Frame rate: Confirm the preset’s result matches your intended output; presets may limit it.
- Audio tracks: Check that the needed track is included. Presets that do not include surround sound may encode only stereo and discard discrete surround channels.
- Destination: Choose a location with enough space for the encoded file as well as the original if you plan to keep both.
Start the encode and wait for it to finish. If the file is larger than the available local storage, an external SSD is optional; no paid converter or storage accessory is required by this workflow.

Make the converted file loop in OBS
- Create or select a scene: In OBS Studio, select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- Add a Media Source: Add a Media Source to the scene, choose the converted local video file and confirm the selection.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS describes this property as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. See OBS Media Sources.
- Check the scene: Play the source and confirm the picture and audio appear as expected. Watch the audio meters and make sure the video fills the intended canvas.
OBS Media Sources support MP4 and several other video formats. MP4 is a straightforward choice for this HandBrake workflow.

Set up and test the broadcast
If OBS is not configured yet, run its Auto-Configuration Wizard, then verify your audio and video settings. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before a first stream. YouTube also advises testing audio, video motion and stream health.
Connect OBS to your YouTube Live broadcast using the stream key for that broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Before the intended stream, make a short test and confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound and reports healthy stream status.

Choose live encoder settings using your tested upload
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds—do not exceed 4 seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended examples are 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the applicable settings and recommendations.
Those bitrate figures describe the live feed sent to YouTube, not the bitrate to select for a HandBrake file. Choose a live resolution and bitrate your actual upload connection can reliably sustain, then test it. The available sources do not establish upload speeds for particular Indian ISPs or locations, so do not assume a named plan can handle a particular quality.
India-specific checks before you go live
- Test on the same internet connection and, if possible, at the time you expect to stream. Network conditions can differ by place and time.
- Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast. This workflow does not establish copyright permission, legal compliance in India or eligibility for a particular YouTube account.
- Check YouTube’s current requirements for your account and location rather than assuming access or monetization eligibility.
- Keep the source and exported file available locally while using OBS; the Media Source plays a local file.
Troubleshoot common problems
The video plays once and stops
Open the OBS Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled for the selected file. Check that the scene uses that source.

The output looks softer or moves differently than the source
Recheck the HandBrake output dimensions and frame rate. The selected preset may downscale the video or limit its frame rate, so inspect the export settings rather than assuming the source properties were retained.
Audio is missing or channels sound wrong
Verify the selected audio track and OBS audio meters. Check the preset’s audio layout: a preset without surround sound may produce stereo and discard discrete surround channels.
YouTube reports an unstable stream
Test the actual upload connection and lower the live resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. Check OBS and YouTube stream health during the test; the recommended bitrate is not a guarantee that your connection can deliver it.

The broadcast does not connect
Confirm OBS is using the stream key for the intended YouTube broadcast and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Recheck the live connection settings and run another short test before relying on the stream.
