You can convert a PSD to PNG without Photoshop using Photopea in a browser, GIMP on a desktop, or Polotno’s PSD-to-PNG converter. Open the PSD, check that it looks right, then export or download a PNG. The PNG is a flattened image, not an editable, layered replacement for your PSD, so keep the original if you may need to edit it later.
Which free PSD-to-PNG method should you use?

What changes when you convert a PSD to PNG?
A PSD can contain separate layers and other editable project elements. A PNG represents the rendered image as a single flattened export, so it does not retain the PSD’s editable layer tree. Save the PNG for sharing or use in other apps, and retain the PSD as the layered master if you need to revise the design.
PNG supports transparency. Before exporting, check whether the PSD’s background layer should be visible: a visible background will appear in the result, while a hidden background can allow transparent areas to remain. GIMP’s PNG export manual describes alpha and pixel-format options.
Method 1: Convert with Photopea in a browser
- Open Photopea in a modern browser. Choose File > Open and select the PSD, or drag the file into the editor. Photopea documents both opening and exporting in its tutorial.
- Inspect the visible composite. Confirm that text, effects, and other artwork appear as expected, and check whether the background layer should remain visible for the intended result.
- Choose File > Export As > PNG, review the output settings, and save the file.
- Keep the original PSD separately if you need its layers and editable structure.
Photopea’s official tutorial supports the browser open-and-export workflow. Photopea.fr, an independent and unofficial site, says the editor is free, runs in a browser, and processes images locally; treat those statements as that FAQ’s claims rather than as official Photopea policy. See its FAQ.

Method 2: Export a PNG from GIMP
- Install GIMP from the official GIMP site, then open the application.
- Open your PSD and inspect the composition. Compare it with the source if an effect, typeface, mask, or other feature looks different.
- Use GIMP’s export command to save the image as PNG. Choose the alpha and pixel-format settings you need; GIMP’s PNG export manual documents options including RGB or grayscale at 8 or 16 bits per channel, with or without alpha.
- Retain the PSD as the layered master.
GIMP lists PSD/PSB and PNG support in its format reference, but also warns that the public PSD specification is not always complete. Compatibility can therefore depend on the features used in a particular file; inspect the opened image before relying on the export.
Method 3: Use Polotno’s PSD-to-PNG converter
- Open Polotno’s PSD-to-PNG page and select or drop in your PSD.
- Review the parsed artwork and make any optional edits you need.
- Download the PNG, then check its appearance and transparency.
Polotno says the page parses the PSD in the browser, keeps the file on the device, and exports a flattened render. Those processing and privacy details are claims made by the vendor on its converter page, not independently audited findings.

How to choose and check the result
- Choose Photopea for a browser editor with a documented open-and-export workflow.
- Choose GIMP when you prefer a desktop application or need its PNG export controls.
- Choose Polotno for a dedicated browser conversion flow and optional edits.
- After any conversion, compare the PNG with the PSD’s intended appearance and check whether transparent areas and the background look right.
