Convert the ProRes file to an MP4 containing H.264 video and compatible audio, then upload that export to YouTube. Start by checking the source’s resolution, frame rate, color type (SDR or HDR), and audio tracks; choose output settings for your actual footage rather than expecting one compression ratio or preset to suit every file.

What changes when you convert ProRes to MP4?

ProRes is an editing-oriented family of codecs. Apple’s April 2022 white paper describes ProRes workflows for full-frame 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 video across HD, 2K, 4K, 6K, 8K, and larger source formats (Apple ProRes white paper). An MP4 export using H.264 is a common delivery format, and YouTube recommends an MP4 container and H.264 video for uploads.

Transcoding changes how the video is encoded; it does not simply put the same ProRes data in a smaller wrapper. The export’s size and appearance depend on duration, resolution, frame rate, footage, and encoding settings. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are useful targets, not promises of a specific file size or visual result. No single percentage reduction applies to every ProRes source.

Choose export settings for YouTube

YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations provide a practical starting point. Match the export to the source and the intended viewing quality; do not lower resolution or frame rate automatically just to make a smaller file.

  • Easy and fast conversion without a loss of quality
  • Support of all the common video and audio formats
  • Including a variety of helpful editing tools
  • Support of more than 130 file formats, more than 40 presets for various devices (Smartphones, Smart TVs)
  • Compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7
Setting Practical choice
Container and video codec MP4 container with H.264 video, as recommended by YouTube.
Audio AAC-LC is among the audio options listed by YouTube. Check the source’s audio tracks and confirm the export includes the intended sound.
Frame rate Keep the frame rate used during recording, as YouTube recommends. Change it only for a deliberate project reason.
Bitrate Use YouTube’s reference for the output resolution and frame-rate class. For SDR, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p and 35–45 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 2160p. These are recommendations, not guaranteed sizes or quality outcomes.
Color For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. HDR has separate guidance; do not apply an SDR conversion recipe blindly to HDR material.

YouTube’s encoding page also contains detailed specifications for partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. Those partner-only details should not be treated as universal upload requirements.

Inspect the ProRes source before exporting

Open the file in your editing or conversion software and establish what you are starting with. A ProRes file does not by itself tell you whether the footage is SDR or HDR, which frame rate was recorded, or how its audio is arranged.

  • Determine whether the footage is SDR or HDR and note its color-space information if available.
  • Check whether the file has one audio track or several, and identify the track you want in the upload.
  • Consider the intended YouTube resolution and the tradeoff you can accept between file size and viewing quality.

Convert with HandBrake

HandBrake’s official documentation describes Creator presets for videos intended for hosting services such as YouTube (HandBrake official presets). Treat a matching Creator preset as a starting point, not as proof that its settings are optimal for your particular source.

  1. Open the ProRes file in HandBrake and inspect the source details.
  2. Choose a Creator preset that fits the intended resolution and frame-rate needs.
  3. Review the video settings. Confirm the output format is MP4 and the video encoder is H.264; check that the chosen frame rate matches the recording.
  4. Review the audio settings and select the intended source track. AAC-LC is among YouTube’s listed options.
  5. Check the picture and color handling. For SDR, use YouTube’s BT.709 recommendation; use an HDR-aware workflow for HDR footage rather than forcing an SDR conversion.
  6. Set the output location and export. Before uploading, play the resulting MP4 and check its picture, sound, duration, and color.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a command-line alternative for people who want configurable encoding or repeatable workflows. Its documentation covers many encoder options (FFmpeg documentation), but that reference is not a tested ProRes-to-H.264 recipe. Verify your installed FFmpeg build, inspect the input streams, and choose settings based on your source and size-quality goal.

Prism Video Converter Software Free [PC Download]
  • Prism can convert popular formats like WMV, MP4, AVI, MOV, MPG, VOB, ASF, and all video formats that have a DirectShow based codec
  • Add video effects such as watermarks, text overlay, filters, and video rotation
  • Easily drag and drop video files or choose a whole folder
  • Preview your video and any changes made to it before conversion
  • Adjustable output settings
  1. Inspect the input file to identify its video resolution, frame rate, color characteristics, and audio streams. Use the information reported by your installed tools rather than assuming every ProRes file is alike.
  2. Configure an MP4 output with H.264 video and an appropriate audio track and codec. YouTube lists AAC-LC among its audio options.
  3. Keep the recorded frame rate unless the project has a reason to change it. Choose the output resolution and consult YouTube’s bitrate reference for the relevant resolution and frame-rate class.
  4. Handle SDR and HDR deliberately. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and provides separate HDR guidance.
  5. Encode to a new file, then play that MP4 from beginning to end or check representative sections for picture, sound, duration, and color before uploading.

FFmpeg’s flexibility is useful for repeatable jobs, but it also means you must choose and verify the settings yourself. HandBrake offers a graphical interface and documented Creator presets; the cited documentation does not establish that either route is faster or produces better image quality.

Check the MP4 before you upload

  • Confirm the file opens and plays, and that its duration matches the intended program.
  • Check that the picture is the expected resolution and frame rate, and look for obvious color shifts or playback issues.
  • Listen for missing, incorrect, or out-of-sync audio.
  • Make sure the chosen settings suit SDR or HDR source material rather than treating the two as interchangeable.

Why is the MP4 still large, or why does it look different?

  • The file is larger than expected: Resolution, frame rate, duration, content, and encoding settings all affect size. A 4K export, for example, is not equivalent to a standard-frame-rate 1080p export. Revisit the resolution and bitrate choices against your quality needs rather than relying on a universal ProRes compression ratio.
  • The export looks softer or shows artifacts: A smaller target can reduce visual quality. Review the output resolution and bitrate reference for the intended frame-rate class, then export again if the compromise is unacceptable.
  • The frame motion looks wrong: Check whether the export changed the source frame rate. YouTube recommends encoding at the frame rate used during recording.
  • The color looks wrong: Check whether the source is HDR or SDR and how the export handled color. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR; HDR requires its separate workflow.
  • The sound is missing or wrong: Recheck which source audio track was selected and whether the exported MP4 contains the intended audio.
  • The file will not play as expected: Verify that the export completed and that the output is an MP4 with the intended video and audio streams. Re-export after correcting the settings if necessary.
