The reliable approach is to make the GIF smaller before encoding: trim the source, choose a practical output width and frame rate, generate a palette from the actual clip with FFmpeg’s palettegen, apply it with paletteuse, and inspect the result at its real display size. A large source video is not automatically a large GIF; duration, dimensions, FPS and color data determine the output and the resources required.
1. Decide what the destination can accept
Before converting, identify the destination’s maximum file size, pixel dimensions and whether it accepts GIF at all. GIF is limited to a palette of up to 256 colors per frame, so it is inefficient for long, high-resolution footage. If the destination supports MP4 or WebM, those formats normally preserve more quality at a much smaller size.
- Duration: select only the action viewers need.
- Width: match the largest size at which the animation will be displayed.
- Frame rate: use the lowest FPS that still looks smooth.
- Color: generate a palette from this clip rather than using a generic palette.
2. Trim the source before doing expensive work
Converting an entire recording wastes memory and encoding time. Find the useful interval first. With FFmpeg, placing -ss before -i can make seeking faster when the container and codec allow it, although it may seek to a nearby keyframe. For frame-accurate cuts, put -ss after the input or trim a short intermediate file first.
ffmpeg -ss 00:02:10 -i recording.mp4 -t 00:00:06 -c:v libx264 -an clip.mp4
This creates a six-second working clip. The exact seek behavior depends on the source codec; check the first and last frames before continuing.

3. A palette-aware FFmpeg conversion
Run this command on the original file or, preferably, on the trimmed clip:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:00:05 -i input.mp4
-filter_complex "[0:v]fps=12,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos,split[a][b];[a]palettegen=stats_mode=diff[p];[b][p]paletteuse=dither=bayer"
-loop 0 output.gif
The controls are deliberate:
-ssand-tselect the segment.fps=12emits 12 frames per second.scale=480:-1sets a 480-pixel width and preserves aspect ratio. Change 480 to the required display width.palettegenbuilds one representative palette for the video stream.paletteuseapplies that clip-specific palette.dither=bayercontrols how unavailable colors are approximated.-loop 0makes the GIF loop forever. Omit it or use a different loop value when the destination has its own playback behavior.
A two-pass palette is important because direct GIF encoding can look washed out or banded. The palette is based on the colors actually present in your clip instead of a generic set.
Palette and dithering options
FFmpeg’s palette filters expose several useful controls. max_colors sets the palette size up to the GIF format’s 256-color limit. stats_mode=full considers all frames; stats_mode=diff emphasizes changing regions and can work well when most of the background is static; stats_mode=single creates statistics for one frame. Test diff for localized motion, then inspect edges and gradients for artifacts. paletteuse offers different dithering modes; Bayer dithering is compact and patterned, while other modes may look smoother but increase processing or visual noise.
4. Reduce size in the order viewers notice least
If the GIF is too large, change one variable at a time:
- Shorten duration. Removing an unneeded second eliminates every frame in that interval.
- Reduce width. Scaling from 960 to 480 pixels usually has a larger effect than small quality tweaks.
- Lower FPS. Try 10, 8 or 6 FPS for slides, cursor demonstrations or slow motion.
- Adjust palette and dithering. Lower
max_colorsor choose a less noisy dither only after duration, width and FPS meet the viewing requirement.
Always inspect the output at the destination’s actual size. A GIF that looks poor when zoomed to 400% may be perfectly clear in a 320-pixel slot.

5. Handling very large input files
A browser converter researched for this workflow accepts inputs up to 200 MB, loads the full video into memory and recommends clips of about 10 seconds or less. Those are limits of that particular tool, not universal FFmpeg limits. FFmpeg itself has no single RAM requirement: memory use varies with codec, source resolution, duration, filters and build.
For a job that stresses memory, create a short intermediate clip as shown above, lower the working width, and convert that segment. Avoid decoding a long recording when only a few seconds belong in the animation.
6. Alternative: gifski for a dedicated GIF encoder
gifski is useful when you want a specialized encoder fed by FFmpeg frames. Its documented pipeline is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteffmpeg -i video.mp4 -f yuv4mpegpipe - | gifski -o anim.gif -
It can automatically downsize high-resolution input and provides --width, --quality, --lossy-quality and --motion-quality. For example:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -f yuv4mpegpipe - |
gifski --width 480 --quality 80 -o output.gif -
Use this when you prefer gifski’s encoding controls over an all-FFmpeg filter graph. Its documentation cautions that fitting a predefined file size requires experimentation and that size estimates are imprecise; do not assume a quality value maps to a fixed number of megabytes.

7. Browser-based conversion
A graphical converter is convenient if you do not want to install command-line tools. Set the start and end times, width and FPS, enable palette generation and palette use, then export. For large files, keep the clip short because the implementation loads the full input into memory and lists a 200 MB maximum. Browser workflows are easier to start but less reproducible than a saved FFmpeg command, and they can fail when a tab runs out of memory.
8. FFmpeg, gifski or browser: which fits?
| Option | Best for | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Scripts and repeatable builds | Precise trimming, scaling, FPS, palette, transparency and dithering controls | Command-line installation and filter syntax |
| gifski | Dedicated GIF encoding | Width and quality controls; automatic downsizing for high-resolution input | Requires FFmpeg piping; file-size targeting needs experimentation |
| Browser converter | Occasional graphical use | No command line; visible start/end, width, FPS and palette controls | Full-input memory behavior and the tool’s 200 MB limit make long clips risky |
9. Common problems and fixes
Washed-out colors or banding
Use the split, palettegen, and paletteuse workflow instead of direct GIF output. Try stats_mode=full if diff omits important colors.
The output is still enormous
Measure duration, width and FPS first. Shorten the clip, reduce width, then lower FPS. Only after those changes adjust palette size or dithering.
Playback stutters
Lower FPS and width, and verify that the destination is not reprocessing the GIF. Very large GIFs can be expensive for browsers to decode even when download size seems acceptable.
The GIF has a strange aspect ratio
Use one constrained scale dimension, such as scale=480:-1, or specify both dimensions with a deliberate crop. Do not stretch the source unintentionally.

10. Reproducible presets
Small interface animation
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:12 -t 00:00:04 -i demo.mp4 -filter_complex "[0:v]fps=10,scale=360:-1:flags=lanczos,split[a][b];[a]palettegen[p];[b][p]paletteuse=dither=bayer" -loop 0 ui.gif
Higher-quality presentation clip
ffmpeg -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:06 -i camera.mp4 -filter_complex "[0:v]fps=15,scale=720:-1:flags=lanczos,split[a][b];[a]palettegen=max_colors=256:stats_mode=full[p];[b][p]paletteuse" -loop 0 presentation.gif
These are starting points, not guarantees of a particular file size. Test at the actual destination and adjust the four main levers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a two-hour video directly to GIF?
You can, but it is usually impractical. Extract a short interval first; GIF is intended for brief animations and has severe color and compression limits.
Why does lowering quality sometimes make the file larger?
Palette and dithering changes can alter frame differences and compression efficiency. Compare the resulting file rather than assuming a quality setting has a predictable size effect.
Should I use transparency?
Only when the source and destination require it. Reserving palette entries for transparency leaves fewer colors for the image and can create visible compromises.
