Use the wkhtmltoimage executable from a Perl list-form system call: install a binary compatible with your CentOS release and CPU, pass the HTML input and image output as separate arguments, then check the exit status and output file. This avoids shell-quoting errors and works for local files or HTTPS URLs.

What wkhtmltoimage does

wkhtmltoimage is the image-rendering command in the open-source wkhtmltopdf project. It uses Qt WebKit to render an HTML document and save a PNG, JPEG or other supported image, so it can run on a server without a graphical display. The project documentation describes a simple workflow: obtain a precompiled binary or build from source, prepare the HTML, and invoke the command-line program. The project is licensed under LGPLv3.

The integration described here launches the external executable from Perl. The project also documents lower-level libwkhtmltox bindings, but the cited material does not establish a maintained Perl binding; the executable is therefore the directly documented Perl integration path.

Check the CentOS and binary prerequisites

CentOS compatibility is the first deployment decision. The official download matrix lists separate builds for CentOS 6 and CentOS 7 and separate CPU architectures. Those old builds are a volatile operational dependency, so check the project download page at deployment time and select an artifact whose architecture and system libraries match the host. Do not assume a package built for one CentOS generation will run on another.

  1. Identify the host release and architecture with cat /etc/centos-release and uname -m.
  2. Download the matching upstream package or archive. An RPM and a tar archive require different installation procedures; follow the instructions for the artifact you actually downloaded.
  3. Install the executable in a controlled location. For a standalone binary, a typical setup after download is:
sudo install -m 0755 wkhtmltoimage /usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage --version

The version command must succeed before Perl is involved. Record the exact version with your deployment configuration, because rendering, JavaScript behavior and available switches can differ between builds.

Prepare HTML that can be rendered reliably

For a local document, give the converter an absolute path and make every dependent stylesheet, font, image and script resolvable from the target machine. For a remote document, use an HTTPS URL and ensure the server can reach it from the CentOS host. A browser on your workstation being able to load a page does not prove that the server can resolve its DNS, negotiate TLS or access its authenticated resources.

Local-file access is a deliberate security choice. The man page documents --enable-local-file-access, --disable-local-file-access and --allow <path>. Enable only what your document needs. A narrow allow-list is safer than granting broad access when HTML or JavaScript is not fully trusted.

Call wkhtmltoimage safely from Perl

Pass a list to Perl’s system function instead of constructing one shell command string. Perl then supplies each option, path and URL as its own argument; spaces, shell metacharacters and quotes in a filename are not re-parsed by an intermediate shell.

use strict;
use warnings;
use File::Spec;

my $input  = '/srv/render/page.html';
my $output = '/srv/render/page.png';
my @cmd = (
    '/usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage',
    '--format', 'png',
    '--width',  '1280',
    '--enable-local-file-access',
    $input,
    $output,
);

system @cmd;
my $status = $? >> 8;
die "wkhtmltoimage failed with exit code $statusn" if $status != 0;
die "image was not createdn" unless -s $output;

The documented command shape is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. Keep the input and output as the final two arguments. The example validates both the process exit code and the resulting file; a zero exit code without a non-empty image should still be treated as a failed job.

File::Spec is useful when paths are assembled from configured directories. In production, also capture standard error so that load warnings, missing resources and JavaScript failures are diagnosable.

Use a remote URL instead of a local file

Replace the local input path with an HTTPS URL. The argument-list pattern remains the same:

use strict;
use warnings;

my $url    = 'https://example.test/report';
my $output = '/srv/render/report.jpg';
my @cmd = (
    '/usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage',
    '--format', 'jpg',
    '--quality', '90',
    '--width', '1440',
    $url,
    $output,
);

system @cmd;
my $status = $? >> 8;
die "render failed with exit code $statusn" if $status != 0;
die "missing or empty outputn" unless -s $output;

Do not put untrusted URLs into a command string. The list form protects argument boundaries, but your application should still validate permitted schemes, hosts and destinations before fetching a URL.

Choose rendering options for the page

Need Switches Practical guidance
Output format --format Select the image format supported by the installed build, such as PNG or JPEG.
JPEG compression --quality <value> Use with JPEG when file size matters; test quality against the text and graphics in your page.
Viewport or image dimensions --width, --height Set the rendering dimensions explicitly so output does not depend on defaults.
Crop a region --crop-x, --crop-y, --crop-w, --crop-h Render the page and retain only the requested rectangle.
JavaScript --enable-javascript, --disable-javascript Disable it for static, untrusted input; enable it only when the page requires client-side rendering.
Wait for client rendering --javascript-delay <msec> Use a measured delay for charts or data populated after load. There is no universal value; the example below uses 1,000 ms only as a starting point.
Images --images, --no-images Turn image loading on or off according to the output and network cost you need.
Cookies and request headers --cookie, --cookie-jar, --custom-header Supply session state or headers for pages that require authentication, while keeping secrets out of logs.
Failed resources --load-error-handling, --load-media-error-handling Choose whether failed documents or media should abort, ignore or warn according to your job’s tolerance.

A JavaScript-heavy page might be invoked as follows:

my @cmd = (
    '/usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage',
    '--format', 'png',
    '--javascript-delay', '1000',
    'https://example.test/dashboard',
    '/srv/render/dashboard.png',
);

Measure when the page is actually complete and replace the delay with a value appropriate to that workload. A fixed delay can be too short for a slow page and wasteful for a fast one.

Handle local assets and authentication

Local CSS, fonts and images

If the HTML references files on disk, decide whether to use --enable-local-file-access or a restricted --allow /srv/render/assets policy. Keep assets beneath a dedicated directory, make paths predictable, and avoid granting access to home directories, application secrets or system files. If local access is disabled, a page can appear unstyled or show missing images even though the HTML itself is valid.

Cookies and headers

Use --cookie or --cookie-jar for session state and --custom-header for request headers documented by the target application. Treat cookie files and authorization values as credentials: restrict their permissions, do not print the complete command to logs, and remove temporary files after the job.

Security requirements for a server renderer

The official download page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server on which it is run.” The same threat applies to an image conversion service that renders attacker-controlled content.

  • Run the converter as a low-privilege account, never as root.
  • Sanitize or reject user-supplied HTML and JavaScript before rendering.
  • Use a separate working directory with only the files the job needs.
  • Prefer --disable-local-file-access or narrowly scoped --allow paths for untrusted content.
  • Restrict outbound network access when remote fetching is not required, and validate destination URLs to reduce server-side request risks.
  • Set process, memory and filesystem limits outside the converter so one page cannot exhaust the host.
  • Capture stderr, exit status and converter version, then validate that the output has the expected type and non-zero size.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
command not found The binary is not on PATH. Use the absolute path, such as /usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage, and verify it with --version.
Exec format or loader error Wrong CPU architecture or incompatible system libraries. Choose the CentOS/architecture build that matches the host; inspect the official download matrix and package dependencies.
Output is empty or missing Bad destination permissions, invalid input, or a failed conversion. Check the directory is writable, inspect stderr, check the exit code, and retain the -s output test.
Styles, fonts or images are absent Relative paths cannot be resolved or local-file access is blocked. Use absolute, deployable asset paths and deliberately configure --enable-local-file-access or a narrow --allow directory.
Page is blank or incomplete JavaScript has not finished, resources failed, or the page requires authentication. Test with JavaScript enabled, add a measured --javascript-delay, configure cookies/headers, and review load-error settings.
Filename containing spaces fails A shell command string re-parsed the path. Pass a Perl argument list to system; do not concatenate and quote a single command string.
Remote URL works locally but not on CentOS Server DNS, TLS, firewall or proxy differences. Test connectivity from the CentOS host and check proxy, certificate and outbound-firewall configuration.

Performance, reliability and deployment checks

No authoritative source in the available material provides a reproducible benchmark for conversion speed, memory consumption or output fidelity. Measure those values on the exact CentOS image, binary version, page mix and concurrency you will operate. Record image dimensions, JavaScript delay, remote-resource behavior and font availability in the test plan.

  • Warm up and test representative pages, including the largest HTML and most JavaScript-intensive page you expect.
  • Run concurrent jobs only after measuring memory and CPU under your own workload.
  • Use timeouts and an external supervisor so a stalled renderer cannot hold a worker forever.
  • Keep deterministic inputs where possible: pin the converter version, package dependencies, fonts and templates.
  • Store stderr and a job identifier with failures, but redact cookies, authorization headers and private URLs.
  • After upgrades, compare dimensions, fonts, images, transparency and crop boundaries rather than relying only on exit code.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server, so you can request a rendered image without installing a browser binary on CentOS. A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Use the documented API examples (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation) with your target URL:

When the executable is the better choice

Keep the Perl and wkhtmltoimage approach when the HTML is generated inside your CentOS network, local-file access is required, or you need an entirely self-managed process with its own resource controls. Use a hosted API when removing browser setup, consent overlays and failed-page billing from your application is more valuable than operating the renderer yourself. In either case, validate output, protect credentials and measure the behavior of your actual pages.
