The most dependable Edge workflow is to open the .mhtml archive, capture the rendered page with Edge Screenshot, and then export the saved capture as JPEG if the current save interface offers JPG/JPEG. Microsoft’s Screenshot documentation confirms full-page and selected-area capture, but it does not promise a JPG option for every device, market, or browser version. If you need the original photos inside the archive rather than one picture of the page, use the separate extraction method described below.
First decide what “convert to JPG” means
MHTML (also called MHT) is a web-page archive. It can contain HTML, styles, and images packaged together. JPG is a raster image. Converting the archive can therefore mean two different things:
- Page image: a screenshot of the complete MHTML page as Edge displays it, including its layout, captions, and surrounding content.
- Individual photos: the image files embedded in the archive, saved separately. These may retain their original format rather than becoming JPG.
Choose the first route for a photo-book page, visual record, or faithful picture of the archive’s layout. Choose the second when you need each photograph as a separate file. A screenshot cannot restore detail that is not visible in the rendered page, while extraction does not preserve the page layout.
Method 1: capture the complete MHTML page in Edge
Open the local archive
- Locate the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile in File Explorer. - Right-click it, choose Open with, and select Microsoft Edge. You can also open Edge, press Ctrl+O, and select the file.
- Wait until the page finishes rendering. Scroll through it once to check that photos, fonts, and background elements have loaded.
If Edge refuses to open the file or displays an unusual compatibility page, see the troubleshooting section. Do not rename the extension to JPG; that changes only the filename, not the file format.

#1 Best Overall
Run Edge Screenshot
- Right-click inside the page and choose Screenshot, or open Edge’s menu and select Screenshot from the available tools. Microsoft also documents the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose a full-page capture when you want the entire rendered archive. Choose a selected-area capture when you need only one panel, image, or section.
- Use the markup controls only if annotations are part of your intended output.
- Choose the control to save the capture, or copy it and paste it into an image application.
Microsoft’s feature description confirms full-page and selected-area capture plus copy and save controls. It does not specify that a local MHTML capture is saved as JPG, and the available controls can vary by device, market, and Edge version. Inspect the current save dialog for .jpg or .jpeg.
If Edge does not offer JPG
- Save the capture in the format Edge provides.
- Open that saved image in an image editor that supports JPEG export.
- Use the editor’s Export or Save as command, select JPEG/JPG, choose an appropriate quality level, and save a new copy.
Keep the original capture until you have checked the JPEG. JPEG compression can introduce artifacts around text and fine detail; use the editor’s highest practical quality when the image will be printed.
Method 2: try to extract the archive’s separate images
If the MHTML contains a photo album and you need one JPG per photograph, a Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor suggests saving the opened page as Web Page (Complete) HTML. This can create an HTML file and a neighboring folder containing downloaded page resources.
Rank #2
- Open the MHTML in Edge.
- Open the browser’s save-page command and select Web Page (Complete) HTML, if that option is available.
- Save it to a new, empty folder so the HTML file and its resource folder are easy to identify.
- Open the generated resource folder and inspect the image files.
- Copy the images you need. Convert an image to JPG only when its existing format is unsuitable for your next application.
This is community advice, not a guaranteed Microsoft conversion procedure. An archive may expose no separate files, may use formats such as PNG or GIF, or may reference resources in a way that does not extract cleanly. A photo’s original dimensions and format depend on what was packaged in the MHTML.

| Goal | Recommended route | What you get | JPG certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| One image of the whole archived page | Edge Screenshot, full page | Rasterized page layout as displayed | Not specified in Microsoft’s Screenshot documentation; verify the save dialog or export afterward |
| One image of a particular region | Edge Screenshot, selected area | Rasterized selection | Not specified; export to JPEG if necessary |
| Separate embedded photos | Save as Web Page (Complete) HTML and inspect the resource folder | Files exposed by the archive | Depends on each extracted file’s original format |
| Printed paper or PDF layout | Edge print workflow | Print preview, paper, margin, and layout output | Edge’s print guide does not establish direct JPG export |
Why printing is not a direct JPG conversion
Edge’s print documentation covers print preview, page layout, paper choices, margins, and related settings. It does not document a direct “print to JPG” output. Printing can be useful for preparing a physical photo book or PDF, but treat it as a separate workflow. Capture the page first when your required deliverable is an image file.
Troubleshooting
The MHTML opens as text or will not load
- Confirm that the file still ends in
.mhtmlor.mhtand was not partially downloaded. - Try opening it from Edge’s Open file command rather than dragging it into a tab.
- If the file came from another computer, copy it locally and check whether security software or an administrator policy is blocking downloaded archives.
Screenshot is missing
Screenshot availability can vary by device, market, and Edge version. Try the right-click menu, Edge settings, and Ctrl+Shift+S. Update Edge if your organization permits updates, then restart the browser.
The full-page result is incomplete
- Wait for visible images and fonts before capturing.
- Scroll through the page once; some pages load content lazily as it enters the viewport.
- Capture a selected region in several pieces if the page is exceptionally long or the full-page tool clips content.
The saved file is not JPG
Do not change the extension manually. Open the saved capture in an editor and export a new JPEG. Verify that the new file opens and that text and photographs remain legible before deleting the source capture.
The extracted folder has no usable photos
The complete-HTML technique is not guaranteed for every MHTML archive. The archive may contain a single flattened image, protected or unusual resources, or references Edge cannot reconstruct. Return to the full-page screenshot route, or obtain the original photo files from the source album.
Edge opens the file in an unexpected compatibility mode
Microsoft documents a Windows policy controlling whether downloaded MHT/MHTML files automatically open in Internet Explorer mode. The policy applies to Windows Edge version 117 and later, is unsupported on macOS, Android, and iOS, and is intended for managed-browser behavior rather than conversion. If this is a work-managed computer, ask the administrator whether that policy is affecting the file.
Or skip the browser setup
For a normal public webpage, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one request. It is not an MHTML extractor: send it a reachable URL, not a local archive path. Its capture pipeline accepts cookie or consent banners before the shot and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters. This cURL example captures a URL as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

- Open the JPG at 100% and inspect small text, faces, and fine lines.
- Check the pixel dimensions; a very long page may produce a file that is difficult for a photo-book service to place.
- Confirm that the crop includes the intended edges and that no browser controls or selection handles were captured.
- Keep the original MHTML and lossless capture as backups.
- For a photo book, verify the printer’s required color profile, dimensions, and minimum resolution before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an MHTML file by renaming it to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes the extension only. You must capture the rendered page or extract an embedded image and then export it as JPEG.
Best Value
Will Edge preserve the original photo quality?
A screenshot records the page as rendered, so its resolution is governed by the displayed capture. Extracted files may retain their original dimensions, but their format and quality depend on the archive.
Can I convert an MHTML file on a phone?
The documented Edge policy for automatic MHT/MHTML handling is unsupported on Android and iOS. The Screenshot feature’s availability also varies by device; use a desktop workflow when the mobile browser does not expose the needed controls.
