For an image-to-PDF feature in Nuxt, keep browser-dependent work on the client: obtain the image, pass it to a PDF-generation library, and offer the resulting file for download. Nuxt can also generate PDFs on the server, but that is a separate design with different runtime and file-handling requirements. The right path depends first on where the image comes from and where conversion should run.
Choose the conversion path
Before writing the conversion flow, decide whether the image is uploaded by a user, fetched from another site, or bundled with your app, and whether the conversion should happen in the browser or on your server. Those choices determine how your application gets the image bytes and what security and deployment constraints apply.

Nuxt’s module directory lists @i2d/nuxt-pdf-frame as Nuxt 3-compatible and supporting PDF and Canvas output, including multi-page support in its listing. It also lists @jasy/nuxt as supporting PDF rendering in the browser or through a server route. Treat those entries as leads, not proof of current compatibility: check each package’s own documentation and release status before choosing it.
Keep browser APIs out of server rendering
Nuxt commonly renders pages universally: JavaScript can run on the server before the browser hydrates the page. The server does not provide browser objects such as window, the DOM, or Canvas. Nuxt’s rendering guidance says that a component importing a library that relies on browser APIs and has side effects should only be called client-side.

Put the interactive conversion UI and browser-dependent imports behind a client-side boundary, such as a client-only component or client plugin. Do not access window or create a Canvas during setup that may run during server rendering. Keep server generation separate if you choose that architecture; it needs a library and runtime that work in your deployment environment.
Build the browser conversion workflow
- Obtain the image. For a user upload, read the selected file in the browser. For an app file with a path known at runtime, use Nuxt’s public asset approach rather than assuming a build-time asset import can resolve dynamically. For a remote image, confirm that its server permits cross-origin access before trying to read it through Canvas.
- Decode and prepare it. Load the image and draw it to Canvas only if your chosen PDF library or layout requires Canvas image data. Canvas can export encoded image data, but an image from a disallowed cross-origin source can make the canvas non-origin-clean and prevent reading its contents.
- Pass image data to a PDF library. Use the library’s current official documentation for its exact API and import pattern. The available documentation here does not establish a current jsPDF API example, so do not copy an unverified method signature into a production Nuxt component.
- Set the document layout. Choose page size, orientation, margins, scaling, transparency handling, and whether multiple pages are needed. These are product decisions; there is no universal default that fits every image or document.
- Offer the PDF to the user. Use the download mechanism recommended by the PDF library you selected, and release temporary object URLs or other resources when they are no longer needed.
For large images, avoid assuming that a base64 string is free to create or keep in memory. MDN notes that toDataURL() encodes the full image into an in-memory string and can have performance implications; it suggests considering toBlob() with URL.createObjectURL() instead. The PDF library must support the representation you choose.

Handle Nuxt images and assets correctly
Nuxt Image’s NuxtPicture configuration documents output formats including WebP, AVIF, JPEG, JPG, PNG, and GIF, with the first browser-supported configured format selected. That controls image delivery and format selection; it does not itself convert an image to PDF. Make sure the bytes your conversion code obtains are in a format your PDF library supports.
Nuxt 4 distinguishes files in public/, served at stable public URLs, from files in the assets directory, which are processed by the build tool. When a path is only known at runtime, follow Nuxt’s public-asset guidance instead of relying on a build-time asset import to resolve it.

Troubleshoot common failures
window, DOM, or Canvas is undefined: browser-only code is running during server rendering. Move the conversion component or plugin behind a client-side boundary.- Canvas export is blocked for a remote image: the remote server has not allowed the cross-origin access needed to read the canvas. Use an origin that permits CORS or arrange a server-side fetch where appropriate; do not assume that displaying an image means its pixels can be read.
- A runtime asset path does not resolve: the file may be handled as a build-time asset rather than a stable runtime URL. For Nuxt 4, check whether it belongs in
public/. - Large images make conversion slow or memory-heavy: full-image data URLs create large in-memory strings. Consider a Blob-based path if the chosen PDF library accepts it, and test with the image sizes your application actually supports.
- The result has unexpected cropping, scale, or page breaks: verify the selected page size, orientation, margins, scaling, and multi-page behavior against the library’s current documentation and your intended output.
