You can either install a Chrome Web Store extension that adds a PNG option to the image context menu, download the original file with Chrome and convert it with Google’s dwebp utility, or use an image editor. For occasional downloads, the extension is the quickest browser-only route; for repeatable or automated work, dwebp is more predictable.
What Chrome can and cannot do natively
Chrome natively displays WebP, including lossy, lossless and transparent WebP images. That support is why a WebP resource opens normally in the browser. Chrome’s documented image action is Save Image As: it downloads the image supplied by the page. It does not present a documented PNG conversion choice in that menu.
If the server already serves a PNG, saving it preserves the PNG. If the server supplies WebP, the downloaded file can remain .webp. Renaming the extension to .png does not change the encoded data and can make other programs reject the file.

Method 1: Add a PNG option with a Chrome extension
The Chrome Web Store listing for Save image as Type adds a context-menu path that saves an image as PNG. The listing identifies version 1.1.3, updated July 10, 2026. Extension listings, permissions and publisher details can change, so inspect the current listing before installing.

- Open the Chrome Web Store and find Save image as Type. Check the publisher, requested permissions, ratings and current version.
- Select Add to Chrome, review the permissions, and confirm the installation.
- Open the page containing the WebP image. Wait until the image has finished loading.
- Right-click the image and hover over Save image as.
- Select PNG from the submenu.
- Choose a destination if Chrome asks where to save the file. Open the resulting file in an image viewer and check that its filename ends in
.png.
What the extension claims about privacy
The listing says conversion happens locally in Chrome and that images are not sent to external servers. That is the vendor’s statement, not independent security testing. Review permissions and remove the extension when you no longer need it. A page can also display an image through a canvas, an embedded document, a CSS background or a protected viewer; in those cases the image context menu may not expose the expected option.
When this method is most useful
- You regularly save images from different sites and want a context-menu workflow.
- You do not want to install a separate desktop editor.
- You prefer not to upload images to an online converter.
Method 2: Use Chrome’s built-in download when conversion is unnecessary
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Save Image As.
- Select a folder and click Save.
Check the downloaded filename and, if necessary, its file properties. This procedure is a download, not a documented format conversion. If the source is WebP, Chrome may save WebP. If a website uses a thumbnail, the saved file may also be a smaller derivative rather than the original asset.
If “Save Image As” is missing
You may have right-clicked text, a page background, a video frame or an image inside a viewer rather than the actual image element. Try opening the image in a new tab first, then right-click the image in that tab. For CSS background images, use the site’s own download control or developer tools only when you have permission to access the asset.
Method 3: Convert the downloaded file with Google’s dwebp
Google’s WebP tools include dwebp, a command-line decoder that converts WebP to PNG or PPM. This is a good fallback when an extension cannot see the image or when you need a repeatable command.
Install the WebP tools
Install the official WebP utilities for your operating system using Google’s WebP documentation and the package source appropriate to your system. Verify that the dwebp command is available in a new terminal. Installation steps and package names vary by Windows, macOS and Linux, so use the current instructions for your platform rather than copying an outdated package name.

Convert one file
- Download the WebP with Chrome using Save Image As.
- Open Terminal, PowerShell or Command Prompt and change to the folder containing the file.
- Run:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
The command reads image.webp and writes decoded PNG data to image.png. Choose a different output name if that file already exists. Keep the original WebP until you have checked the PNG.
Convert several files
Run dwebp once per input file from a script, using unique output names. Do not send multiple jobs to the same output path, because concurrent processes can overwrite one another. A shell loop should also quote filenames containing spaces and special characters.
Why PNG may be larger
WebP is designed for web delivery and can be lossy or lossless. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, but it is often larger for photographs. Converting a lossy WebP to PNG cannot restore detail that was discarded when the WebP was encoded; it only stores the already-decoded pixels in a different format.

Transparent images
WebP can contain an alpha channel. PNG also supports transparency, but check the result against a contrasting background. Some viewers display transparent pixels over a checkerboard, while others show white.
Animated WebP
A single PNG file cannot represent a multi-frame animation. A conversion tool may export one frame or require a separate frame-extraction workflow. If animation matters, keep the original WebP or use an animation-capable format and tool.

Images loaded lazily
Scroll the image into view and wait for it to load before saving. A page may initially contain a low-resolution placeholder, then replace it with a larger WebP. Saving too early captures the placeholder.
Hotlink protection and signed URLs
Some servers return an error, a tiny placeholder or an HTML response when the image URL is opened outside its originating page. Use the page’s own image control, confirm that the downloaded file is really an image, and do not bypass access controls.

The PNG option does not appear
Confirm that you installed the intended extension and that Chrome enabled it. Reload the page, right-click the actual image, and try an image opened in a new tab. An extension update or a conflicting context-menu extension can also change the label.
The saved “PNG” is still WebP
With native Chrome saving, that is expected when the server supplied WebP. Do not rely on the filename alone. Use the extension’s PNG command or run dwebp on the downloaded file.
dwebp says the file is not a WebP image
The URL may have returned HTML, a bot-check page or an error image. Open the file in a text-safe inspection tool or check its type with your operating system, then download it again from the actual image element. A file renamed to .webp is not necessarily WebP data.

The command is not found
The WebP tools are not installed, or their installation directory is not on your PATH. Reopen the terminal after installation and run the platform’s documented setup steps. You can also invoke the executable by its full path.

The output looks different
Compare dimensions, transparency and color profile in an image editor. A PNG conversion does not improve a low-resolution source, undo lossy compression or recreate metadata that was never present in the WebP.
Chrome downloads a tiny image
The page may be using a thumbnail or responsive source. Open the image in a new tab, select the site’s full-size control, or inspect the page’s permitted download options. Respect copyright, authentication and site terms.

Quality, privacy and cost considerations
- Quality: PNG preserves the decoded pixels but cannot recover detail lost in a lossy WebP.
- Storage: PNG files can be substantially larger, especially for photographs; retain WebP for web delivery when browser compatibility permits.
- Privacy: The extension listing claims local processing. A local
dwebpcommand keeps conversion on your computer. Avoid uploading sensitive images to an untrusted online converter. - Repeatability: A command-line conversion is easier to place in a script and audit than a changing browser context menu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a WebP URL directly without downloading it?
Chrome’s standard Save Image As action downloads the resource first. The documented dwebp workflow also expects a local file, so download the WebP before running the command.
Will converting WebP to PNG improve image quality?
No. PNG prevents another lossy encoding step, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by a lossy WebP.
Can one PNG file preserve an animated WebP?
No. PNG is normally a single-frame image format; preserve the animated WebP or extract frames with a tool designed for animation.
The Bottom Line
For a browser-only workflow, install Save image as Type and choose Save image as > PNG. For dependable automation, download the WebP and run dwebp image.webp -o image.png. Chrome’s native Save Image As alone downloads the original format; it does not document a PNG conversion option.
