If by “web file” you mean a downloaded WebP image, open it in an image app that can export JPEG and save a new copy. On a Mac, Apple’s Preview app has a direct File > Export > JPEG workflow. If the picture is embedded in a Word, PowerPoint, or Excel document, Microsoft documents a separate Save as Picture workflow. “JPG” and “JPEG” refer to the same commonly used image format; some apps label the choice JPEG.
The steps below assume the file is an image, not a webpage or another kind of download. Keep the original until you have checked the exported file.
First, check what kind of file you have
“Web file” is not a specific image format. It could mean a WebP image downloaded from a website, but it could also mean a webpage or another file type. This guide is for an image in .webp format. If the file has a different extension, these steps may not apply.
WebP is an image format used on the web. Google describes it as supported by major browsers and software libraries. The name of the file alone does not guarantee that every app can open every WebP file, so if an app cannot display it, try another documented workflow below rather than changing the extension and assuming the contents have changed.

Changing a filename from picture.webp to picture.jpg does not convert the image. A real conversion decodes the original image and exports it in JPEG format. Renaming can leave a WebP image inside a file labelled JPG, which may still fail to open or upload.
Choose the right output format before converting
Use JPEG when the destination requires it
Choose JPEG when a website, form, app, or recipient specifically requires a JPG/JPEG file. JPG and JPEG are commonly used names for the same format, though an app’s format menu may show only “JPEG.” A conversion changes the file format; it does not improve the underlying image.
Keep transparency or animation when it matters
JPEG does not retain transparent pixels in the way a transparency-supporting format does. If the WebP has a transparent background, check the exported result; if you need that transparency, use PNG instead when the receiving service accepts it. Google’s WebP documentation lists PNG as an output from its decoding example, and Microsoft lists PNG among the formats available when saving a picture from supported Office apps.
JPEG is a still-image format. If the WebP is animated, a single JPG will not preserve the motion. Choose a destination format and workflow that supports animation if that is important; the workflows described here do not provide an animation-preserving conversion procedure.

Expect a quality and file-size trade-off
Apple’s Preview export includes a JPEG quality control. Lowering quality can reduce image detail as well as file size, so inspect the result at its intended size before using it. Keep the original and avoid repeatedly opening and re-saving the JPEG: JPEG exports commonly use lossy compression, and another lossy save can discard more image information.
Do not assume a JPG will be smaller than the WebP. Google’s published comparison says lossless WebP images are “26% smaller than PNGs,” and lossy WebP images are “25-34%” smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent quality. Those are Google’s format comparisons, not a prediction for an individual file or a promise about the size of your conversion. A destination’s upload limit and the image’s visible quality are better guides than the extension alone.
Convert a WebP image on a Mac with Preview
Apple documents Preview’s image-export workflow, including the JPEG format choice and a quality control. The instructions apply to image conversion generally; they do not establish that Preview supports every possible WebP variant.
- Open the image in Preview. If it opens in another app, use the Mac’s open-with option to choose Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- In the Format menu, choose JPEG.
- Adjust the quality control if needed. Use a higher setting when preserving visible detail matters more than reducing file size; use a lower setting only if you have checked that the result remains acceptable.
- Choose a destination and enter a new filename, then save. Use a different name or folder so the WebP original remains available.
- Open the exported file and check that it displays correctly and meets the recipient’s requirements.
Convert a small batch in Preview
Apple also documents opening multiple images in one Preview window, selecting images in the sidebar, and exporting. For a small batch, open the images together, select the items you intend to convert in the sidebar, then follow the export steps above. Check the destination and names carefully so you can match each output to its source. This is not a guarantee that every WebP variant in a batch will be supported.

Save a picture from Word, PowerPoint, or Excel as JPEG
This route is for a picture embedded in a supported Office document. It is not evidence that every Windows image viewer can open and convert a standalone downloaded WebP file.
- Open the document containing the picture in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
- Right-click the picture and choose Save as Picture.
- In the format list, choose JPEG.
- Choose a filename and location, then save the separate image file.
- Open the saved file and confirm that it is the picture you intended to export.
If you are working with a standalone WebP file rather than an image inside an Office document, use an image editor or converter that explicitly supports opening WebP and exporting JPEG. Do not treat this Office procedure as a universal Windows conversion method.
Use a command-line tool only for the format it documents
Google’s libwebp tools have distinct roles. Google documents dwebp for decoding WebP and gives an example that produces PNG; PPM is also listed. That documented example is not a direct JPG-export command. Google describes cwebp as encoding PNG or JPEG inputs to WebP, so it is not the tool to use for turning a WebP into a JPG.
If you need a JPG and are considering a command-line workflow, use a conversion application whose documentation explicitly says it can open WebP and export JPEG. Otherwise, choose Preview on a Mac or the Office picture-export workflow when the source image is embedded in an Office document. Confirm the output format in the resulting file or app rather than relying on the output filename.

Consider a browser extension cautiously
A Chrome Web Store listing exists for a third-party extension named “Convert WebP to JPG,” describing conversion to JPG/JPEG and PNG. Treat an extension as an optional route, not a Google-endorsed converter or a guarantee of independent security review. Before installing one, check the current listing, publisher, requested permissions, and whether its handling of files suits your needs. The existence of a listing does not establish that it is available in every region or remains unchanged.
For private or sensitive pictures, prefer a local desktop workflow over uploading the image to an online converter unless you have checked that service’s data-handling terms. The available information here does not assess any online image converter’s privacy practices.

The result still appears to be WebP
Check that you selected JPEG in the app’s export or save dialog. Renaming the extension is not conversion. If the app has no JPEG export option, choose an application that explicitly supports it rather than changing the filename.
The app will not open the source
First confirm that the downloaded file is actually a WebP image and that the download completed. Try a different app with documented WebP support. Apple’s Preview instructions describe image conversion generally but do not guarantee support for every WebP variant. If using a command-line approach, remember that Google’s documented dwebp example outputs PNG, not JPG.

The output has an unexpected background
The source may contain transparency that JPEG cannot preserve. If a transparent background is required, export or decode to PNG when the destination supports it; otherwise, inspect the JPEG against the background where it will be used before submitting it.
The file is larger or looks worse
Both outcomes can happen. WebP can be more compact than a comparable JPEG according to Google’s published format comparison, while JPEG’s quality setting affects how much image detail is retained. Try an appropriate Preview quality setting, inspect the result, and keep the original as a fallback. Do not repeatedly re-save a lossy JPEG to chase a smaller file.
The converted file is rejected by a website or form
Check whether the requirement is specifically JPG/JPEG, whether there is a file-size limit, and whether the image’s dimensions or other rules are also constrained. Re-exporting the same image cannot guarantee acceptance if the rejection is due to a separate requirement. Keep the original and make a new export if you need to adjust quality or choose a different format.
