Convert a JPG table to Excel on Windows or Mac
Excel’s Data from Picture feature turns a table in a JPG into worksheet cells. The workflow is available in Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, the web, macOS, and mobile devices, although the exact menu differs by platform.
1. Prepare the JPG
Use an image that contains the table as clearly as possible. Crop away unrelated text, borders, browser controls, or surrounding objects. A scan or screenshot that is straight-on and in focus is better than a photograph taken from an angle. Microsoft specifically advises avoiding images where the data is viewed in perspective; the table should be head-on and focused.
- Crop to the table whenever practical.
- Keep column and row lines visible if they help separate cells.
- Use the highest-resolution copy available.
- Make sure text is not cut off at the image edges.
- If the source is a phone photo, flatten the page and avoid glare or shadows.
2. Open Data from Picture
In desktop Excel for Microsoft 365, create or open a workbook and select Data > From Picture > Picture From File. Choose the JPG and open it. If you already copied a screenshot, choose Data > From Picture > Picture From Clipboard instead.

3. Let Excel analyze the image
Excel processes the image and displays the detected table in the Data from Picture dialog. This preview is a recognition result, not yet a permanent worksheet import.
4. Review every questionable cell
Read the preview against the JPG. Correct characters, numbers, dates, decimal marks, minus signs, totals, and column boundaries before importing. Small or blurred characters are particularly easy to misread. Pay attention to distinctions such as 0 and O, 1 and I, commas and decimal points, and negative values.
5. Insert the table
When the preview matches the source, select Insert Data. Excel places the recognized values into cells. Save the workbook, then perform a second spot check in the worksheet, especially for financial, scientific, inventory, or other data where one character changes the meaning.
Convert a screenshot instead of a saved JPG
If the table is currently visible on your screen, you do not need to save a JPG first. Capture or copy the table, copy the resulting screenshot to the clipboard, and select Data > From Picture > Picture From Clipboard. Excel opens the same review-and-correction dialog before insertion.

This route is useful when a table appears in a PDF viewer, browser, email, or another application and you only need a section of it. Crop the screenshot before copying when possible so Excel receives only the relevant table.

Mobile instructions
Excel on iPhone or iPad
Microsoft’s mobile instructions include opening Excel and choosing Insert > Data from Picture. Point the camera at the table or select an existing image, adjust the captured area, review the detected cells, correct errors, and open or insert the result in Excel.
Microsoft 365 mobile app
The Microsoft 365 app provides an Actions > Image to Table route. After selecting or capturing the image, review the preview and choose the option to open the result in Excel. The same verification rule applies: compare the inserted values with the source before using them.
Windows requirements and supported languages
For Excel on Windows, Microsoft documents support on Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 1903 or later, with the Edge WebView2 Runtime installed. If the command is missing or the preview does not open, confirm those requirements and that you are signed in to a Microsoft 365 edition that includes the feature.
Microsoft lists these supported character sets:
- English, Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian
- Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, and Turkish
A table containing unsupported scripts, unusual symbols, or mixed writing systems may require more manual correction. The documentation does not provide a universal accuracy percentage, so do not treat a successful preview as proof that every cell is correct.
How to improve recognition before importing
Use a clean, tightly cropped source
Remove logos, captions, unrelated paragraphs, and decorative elements. Extra content can make it harder for Excel to determine where the table begins and ends.

Keep the perspective flat
For a photographed page, place the camera parallel to the paper. Correct keystone distortion or rotate the image before importing if the rows and columns converge toward one side.
Preserve legibility
Do not enlarge a blurry image and expect lost detail to return. Instead, obtain a sharper scan or higher-resolution screenshot. Avoid glare, shadows, compression artifacts, and handwriting crossing cell borders.
Separate multiple tables
If one JPG contains several unrelated tables, crop and import them individually. This makes it easier to check column headings and prevents Excel from treating captions or blank space as table rows.
Check data types after insertion
Excel may display a recognized value differently from the source. Confirm dates, percentages, currency symbols, leading zeros, account numbers, and long identifiers. A code such as 00127 can lose leading zeros if Excel interprets it as a number; format or replace such cells as needed.

- Every row and column is present.
- Headings are in the correct columns.
- Totals and subtotals match the image.
- Negative signs, decimal separators, and thousands separators are correct.
- Dates use the intended day-month or month-day interpretation.
- Percentages and currency values retain their symbols or numerical meaning.
- Leading zeros in IDs, postal codes, and product codes are preserved.
- Blank cells are genuinely blank rather than omitted or shifted.
- Footnotes and continuation rows are handled deliberately.
Common problems and fixes
“From Picture” is not visible
Check that you are using Excel for Microsoft 365 and that the ribbon is expanded. On Windows, verify Windows 10 version 1903 or later or Windows 11, and install the Edge WebView2 Runtime if required. On a phone, use the mobile command under Insert or the Microsoft 365 app’s Actions > Image to Table.
The preview has merged or shifted columns
Crop more tightly, straighten the image, and retry. Strong shadows, angled photographs, faint grid lines, and adjacent text can obscure boundaries. If the layout remains difficult, insert the result and manually split or move the affected cells.
Numbers are wrong
Inspect the original at high zoom and correct the preview before selecting Insert Data. Recheck decimal points, commas, minus signs, currency symbols, and characters that look alike.
Some rows are missing
Make sure the entire table is inside the crop and that no row is hidden by glare, folds, or the image edge. Import a clearer or higher-resolution image, or divide a very large table into smaller crops.
The language is not recognized reliably
Compare the table’s characters with Microsoft’s supported character-set list. Unsupported scripts and unusual symbols may need to be typed or corrected manually after insertion.

The table is confidential
Follow your organization’s rules before sending images to any cloud-connected feature. Remove unnecessary personal or confidential fields from the image when possible, and store the resulting workbook according to your data-handling policy.
When manual entry or another workflow is better
Data from Picture is designed for tabular images, not every kind of document. Manual entry can be safer for a tiny table with only a few critical values, because you can type and verify each cell directly. For a long document with paragraphs, forms, handwriting, or complex merged layouts, a specialized document-OCR workflow may be more appropriate. Whatever method you choose, retain the original JPG so another person can audit the workbook.
