First identify the file you actually have. Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot feature downloads screenshots as PNG, not WebP. If you have that PNG, open it in an image editor and use Export, Save As, or the equivalent JPEG option. If you have a WebP image saved from a web page, convert that WebP to JPEG instead. Renaming .png or .webp to .jpg changes only the filename; it does not change the encoded image.
Mozilla documents the Firefox screenshot workflow at Take screenshots in Firefox. Its current instructions say downloaded captures use the .png extension and are saved in Firefox’s normal download folder.
What Firefox screenshot file do you have?
The conversion route depends on the starting format:

A file ending in .jpg is not necessarily a JPEG. The destination application should identify the file as JPEG after conversion; if it still reports PNG or WebP, only the name changed.

Convert a Firefox screenshot (PNG) to JPG
1. Capture and download the screenshot
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Open the page context menu and choose Take Screenshot. Firefox also provides a keyboard shortcut; the exact shortcut is shown in Mozilla’s current support instructions.
- Select a region, capture the visible page, or choose the full-page option.
- Choose Download. Firefox saves the capture as a PNG in the browser’s default download location. You can also copy it to the clipboard instead of downloading it.

2. Open the PNG in an image editor
Open the downloaded file with an application that can export JPEG. Depending on the application, the command may be called Export, Export As, Save As, or Save a Copy. Select JPEG or JPG as the output format.
3. Choose the output options
Most editors show a quality or compression control when writing JPEG. Higher quality generally retains more detail and creates a larger file; stronger compression creates a smaller file and more visible artifacts. The available controls and their meaning vary by editor, so use its preview and documentation rather than assuming one universal quality number.
4. Verify the result
- Confirm the new filename ends in
.jpgor.jpeg. - Open the new file in another viewer or the application that needs it.
- Check that the application identifies it as JPEG, not merely by its filename.
- Keep the original PNG until you are satisfied with the conversion.
Convert a WebP image saved from Firefox
A WebP image shown on a page is a different starting point from a Firefox screenshot. Right-clicking and saving an image may give you WebP because that is the format supplied by the website. The normal Firefox screenshot command does not create that WebP file.

Editor method
- Open the
.webpfile in an editor that supports WebP. - Use Export or Save As.
- Select JPEG/JPG, choose the available quality options, and save a new file.
- Verify the resulting file as described above.
Firefox extension method
Mozilla Add-ons lists Save webP as PNG or JPEG (Converter). Its listing describes a right-click workflow for images displayed in Firefox and an option to choose JPEG quality. Review the extension’s current permissions, availability, and features on its listing before installing; add-on details can change.
After installation, open the page containing the image, use the image’s context menu, choose the converter command, select JPEG, and save the result. This route is convenient for an image already displayed in the browser; it does not replace Firefox’s built-in screenshot command.
Why renaming the extension fails
PNG, WebP, and JPEG use different encodings. A filename extension helps applications guess a format, but it does not rewrite the bytes inside the file. Renaming picture.webp to picture.jpg can therefore produce a file that is still WebP and may not open in software expecting JPEG. Mozilla’s support discussion explains this distinction: Stop saving all image files as WebP? The thread dates from 2020 and is useful for the format issue, not as a statement of every current Firefox behavior.
JPEG versus PNG and WebP
JPEG is lossy
JPEG encoding discards some image information. Re-exporting a PNG or WebP as JPEG is therefore not a pixel-preserving operation. Repeatedly opening and saving the JPEG can introduce additional loss.

Transparency requires care
PNG and WebP can represent transparency, while ordinary JPEG does not. If your screenshot includes transparent areas, the editor must replace them with a background color when writing JPEG. If transparency or exact pixel preservation matters, keep the PNG or use a format that supports the requirement.
WebP may be lossy or lossless
MDN describes JPEG as lossy and WebP as supporting both lossy and lossless modes in its image file type and format guide. The WebP specification is documented in RFC 9649. Converting a lossless WebP to JPEG still creates a lossy copy.

Troubleshooting
The downloaded Firefox screenshot is PNG, not WebP
That is expected for the built-in screenshot workflow documented by Mozilla. Convert the PNG in an editor; do not search for a Firefox setting that changes the screenshot download into JPEG.
The “JPG” file will not open
Check whether you merely renamed the extension. Reopen the original PNG or WebP in a converter and perform an actual JPEG export. Then create a fresh output file with a different name.

The image has a black or solid background after conversion
The source likely contained transparency. JPEG cannot retain it, so choose an intentional background during export or keep the source in PNG/WebP.
The output looks blocky or blurry
JPEG compression was probably set too aggressively, or the source had already been compressed. Export again with a higher available quality setting, and retain the original for future conversions.
The extension command is missing
Confirm that the add-on is installed and enabled, that you are using the image’s context menu rather than the page’s general menu, and that the current listing still supports your Firefox version. If not, use an editor-based conversion.
The editor cannot open WebP
Use a different WebP-capable editor or the converter extension listed by Mozilla Add-ons. Do not change the suffix manually.

- Local conversion: Exporting an existing file in an editor avoids uploading the image to a third-party service, but processing speed and controls depend on the application and your computer.
- JPEG size: Larger screenshots and higher quality settings generally produce larger files. Check the result against the upload or attachment limit of the destination.
