You do not need to discard a 2014 Dungeons & Dragons character. The 2024 core books update the fifth-edition rules and remain compatible with existing adventures and supplements, but converting a character is a deliberate rebuild rather than a universal one-click formula. Decide with your DM which rules baseline the campaign uses, preserve the original sheet, then replace or verify each character element and recalculate every dependent statistic.
Choose a rules path before changing the sheet
The first decision is not mechanical; it is a table-policy decision. Wizards of the Coast’s FAQ describes the relationship plainly: “No. The 2024 core rulebooks are updating the fifth edition ruleset.” Your group can therefore continue using a 2014 character, move to a 2024 version, or keep the campaign’s older rules consistently. Do not start editing until the DM has stated which approach applies to this campaign.
| Path | What stays in use | When it is appropriate |
|---|---|---|
| Fully 2014 | 2014 class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, equipment rules and feature wording. | The campaign remains on the original rules or the player wants no mechanical change. |
| 2024 baseline | 2024 replacements wherever they exist, plus only compatible 2014 options that have no replacement or that the DM explicitly permits. | The campaign adopts the updated core books and the player wants the character rebuilt for them. |
| Mixed by exception | A 2024 foundation with selected older material retained under a recorded DM ruling. | The table needs a specific legacy option, but everyone agrees which wording controls. |
The safest practical rule is consistency: use one edition’s class chassis and do not combine a 2024 class with a 2014 subclass that already has a published 2024 replacement. D&D Beyond enforces that distinction for supported content: a legacy subclass with a 2024 update cannot be selected with the 2024 class, although it remains usable with the 2014 class.
What the 2024 Player’s Handbook replaces
The 2024 Player’s Handbook replaces the 2014 versions of the core character rules and options when an updated version is printed. The replacement categories are:

- Class and subclass rules
- Spells
- Feats
- Equipment rules
- Species
- Backgrounds
- General rules that affect how those options function
Start with the 2024 text for every category that has a replacement. An option that does not appear in the 2024 book is not automatically deleted. D&D Beyond identifies older material with a Legacy badge, and its compatibility guidance keeps 2014 material available subject to the edition and DM decisions. The 2024 Player’s Handbook specifically does not include the 2014 Knowledge Domain, Nature Domain, Tempest Domain or School of Conjuration. Those examples require a source-text and DM check rather than an assumption that every absent option is either legal or forbidden.
Prepare a conversion record
A conversion record prevents accidental loss and makes rulings visible to the whole table. Keep the original 2014 sheet unchanged and make a copy, export or duplicate for the new version. Then create a short ledger with one row for each element:
- Original 2014 wording and source
- 2024 replacement, if one exists
- Option retained from 2014, if any
- New value after recalculation
- DM ruling for unresolved or legacy material
Record the character’s level, experience, ability scores, proficiency bonus, hit points, inventory, currency, attunement, spell list, prepared spells, known conditions and active effects before editing. A snapshot is especially important for a character in the middle of an adventure, because a conversion can alter what the character can do during a session even when the story and level remain unchanged.

Step-by-step conversion procedure
1. Confirm the campaign baseline
Ask the DM whether the group is using the 2024 core rules, the 2014 rules, or a 2024 baseline with named exceptions. Clarify which Player’s Handbook the table uses for class features, spells, feats, equipment and general rules. Ask specifically how the campaign handles an option that is absent from the 2024 book and how magic items written for older books are interpreted.
2. Freeze the original character
Save the 2014 sheet as a separate file or duplicate character. Do not overwrite it. Note the date of the snapshot and include the character’s current hit points, spell slots, prepared spells, consumables, conditions and temporary bonuses. This gives you a clean fallback if the table decides to return to the older rules or if a conversion choice proves incompatible with the campaign.
3. Inventory every rule-bearing element
Mark each item as replace, retain or needs a ruling. Include the obvious choices—class, subclass, species, background and feats—but also spells, fighting styles, weapon properties, armor, tools, languages, racial or species traits, class resources, companion rules and magic-item interactions. Do not treat a feature as harmless simply because its name is unchanged; revised wording can alter timing, uses, targets or action type.

4. Rebuild the class and subclass
Choose the 2024 class if the campaign is using the updated baseline. Apply its level-by-level features in order rather than trying to patch individual sentences into the 2014 class. Then select a 2024 subclass when the character’s subclass has an updated version. If the desired subclass has no 2024 replacement, ask the DM whether the 2014 subclass may be retained and write that ruling in the ledger.

That combination mixes two versions of the same progression and can produce conflicting feature levels, resource rules or action timing. If the player instead keeps the 2014 subclass, the clean route is to keep the 2014 class with it.
5. Replace species, background and feats
Select the 2024 species and background text where the 2024 book supplies a replacement. Recheck ability-score increases, proficiencies, languages, starting equipment, origin features and any feature that grants a spell or a recurring use. Rebuild feats from the 2024 text when a matching feat exists. If a 2014 feat or background is not represented in the 2024 book, obtain an explicit DM decision before carrying it forward.
Do not copy a 2014 ability-score adjustment into a 2024 background unless the 2024 background actually grants it. The character’s final ability scores should come from the selected 2024 options and the campaign’s advancement history, not from combining both versions.
6. Recheck spells
Compare every prepared, known or granted spell with the 2024 wording. Replace a spell with its 2024 version when the updated text exists and the campaign uses it. Recalculate spell attack modifiers and save DCs after finalizing the class, ability scores and proficiency bonus. Verify the source of each granted spell—class, subclass, species, feat or background—because changing one of those elements can remove or add spells.
Review concentration, casting time, range, target, duration, components, damage type, upcasting and whether the spell is prepared, known or always available. A spell list copied unchanged from the old sheet can contain an obsolete version even when the spell’s name looks identical.

7. Rebuild equipment and weapon choices
Use the 2024 equipment rules for armor, weapons, tools and starting gear where the campaign has adopted them. Recheck armor class from armor, shield, Dexterity modifier and any class or species feature. Recalculate attack bonuses and damage from the selected weapon, ability modifier, proficiency and relevant feature.
Review weapon mastery choices if the 2024 class grants them. Confirm which weapons qualify, which mastery property is selected and when the property applies. If a 2014 magic item modifies a weapon attack or grants an unusual interaction, record how the DM wants that item to work with the 2024 weapon rules instead of silently importing an interpretation.
8. Recalculate derived statistics
Once the choices are final, calculate dependent values from the rebuilt character. At minimum, check:
- Armor Class, including armor, shield and defensive features
- Hit points and hit-dice information
- Initiative and movement
- Weapon and spell attack bonuses
- Damage modifiers and critical-hit effects
- Saving-throw bonuses and skill bonuses
- Spell save DC and spell attack modifier
- Prepared or known spells and available spell slots
- Uses of class, subclass, feat and species features
- Proficiency bonus and any expertise or advantage rules
- Carrying capacity, item counts and attunement
Perform these calculations only after the class, ability scores, proficiency sources, equipment and feats are settled. Otherwise you may need to redo the same numbers when a background or subclass changes.
9. Audit action economy and feature timing
Read the rebuilt features with the action economy in mind. Mark whether each important feature uses an action, bonus action, reaction, no action or a special trigger. Note limits such as once per turn, once per short or long rest, proficiency-bonus uses, concentration and duration. Compare the new timing with the character’s normal combat routine; a conversion can change the order in which the character attacks, casts, moves or activates a resource even when the character’s level is unchanged.
10. Resolve magic items and campaign-specific exceptions
Magic items may refer to older weapon, spell, recharge or attunement language. Check each item against the campaign’s chosen 2024 rules and ask the DM about interactions that are not obvious from the item’s text. Put the answer in the conversion ledger, especially if the item depends on a 2014 subclass feature, a legacy spell or an older weapon property.

11. Obtain final approval
Give the DM the new sheet and the ledger before play. Ask the DM to approve retained Legacy options, absent subclasses, converted equipment, magic-item interactions and any feature whose wording is unclear. Keep the original sheet available for the first session so that a disputed interpretation does not halt the game.

How to handle subclasses and Legacy options
When a 2024 subclass exists
Use the 2024 subclass with the 2024 class. Its feature levels and wording are designed for that class chassis. Do not import the 2014 subclass merely because the character already owns it; doing so can create an unsupported hybrid.
When the 2024 book has no version
Check the actual 2024 contents and the applicable compatibility guidance. Knowledge Domain, Nature Domain, Tempest Domain and School of Conjuration are named examples of 2014 subclasses absent from the 2024 Player’s Handbook. A DM may allow one as legacy content, replace it with another option or keep the character fully 2014. Write the decision down and identify which class version accompanies it.
When a digital builder blocks the combination
D&D Beyond’s source controls distinguish 2014 material from 2024 material. Existing 2014 character sheets are not mechanically rewritten: they retain their 2014 abilities, spells, items and conditions, although labels such as Species and Heroic Inspiration may be updated. If you own both books, you can select both 2014 and 2024 sources, while older content is marked Legacy. A blocked 2024-class/2014-subclass combination generally reflects the platform’s compatibility rule, not a missing checkbox. Use the 2014 class for the legacy subclass or ask the DM for a different supported build.
D&D Beyond workflow
- Open the existing 2014 character and duplicate or export it before making changes.
- In the character’s source or content settings, enable the 2024 books required by the campaign and leave 2014 sources enabled only when the DM permits legacy material.
- Replace the class and subclass first, then species, background and feats.
- Review the spellbook, prepared list, granted spells and spell details.
- Re-select armor, weapons, tools and weapon mastery choices under the chosen rules.
- Inspect the automatically calculated armor class, attacks, save DCs, skill bonuses, hit points and feature-use counters.
- Review every Legacy item and subclass; confirm that each is intentionally retained.
- Compare the digital result with the written ledger and have the DM approve exceptions.
The builder can recalculate many values, but it cannot decide your table’s policy for an absent option or resolve every interaction between an old magic item and new wording. Treat the generated sheet as a calculation aid, not as permission to mix editions.
Common conversion failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The character has two different versions of a class feature. | The 2014 and 2024 class progressions were combined. | Choose one class version and rebuild its features from level one through the current level. |
| A 2014 subclass cannot be selected with the 2024 class. | The subclass has a 2024 update or the builder marks the pairing as incompatible. | Use the 2024 subclass, or keep the 2014 subclass with the 2014 class after DM approval. |
| Armor class or attack bonuses changed unexpectedly. | Equipment, ability modifiers, proficiency or a defensive feature changed. | Recalculate from the final ability scores, equipment and class text; do not copy the old total. |
| The spell list contains a spell the new build no longer grants. | The spell came from a replaced background, feat, species or subclass. | Trace the spell’s source and remove or replace it according to the 2024 option. |
| A retained option is missing from the digital builder. | The option is Legacy, disabled in source filters or not supported for the selected class version. | Enable the permitted source, select the matching 2014 class, or record a manual DM-approved exception. |
| A magic item behaves differently in play. | Its interaction depends on older weapon, spell or attunement language. | Ask the DM for a ruling before the session and add that ruling to the ledger. |
Do you have to rebuild an old character?
No. Existing adventures and supplements remain compatible with the updated fifth-edition core books, and a 2014 character can remain a 2014 character when the campaign uses those rules. Rebuild only when the campaign adopts the 2024 baseline or when the player and DM agree that the new options are worth the change. If you do rebuild, preserve the old sheet and make the new one a controlled, reviewable version rather than an improvised mixture.
What the rules do not provide
There is no official conversion percentage, success rate or universal numerical formula for translating every 2014 character into 2024 rules. The reliable method is categorical: identify each rule-bearing element, use a 2024 replacement where one exists, retain older material only under the compatibility guidance and DM’s ruling, then recalculate dependent statistics. Any claim that one fixed multiplier or automatic conversion table handles every class, subclass, spell and item goes beyond the published guidance.
