There is no official one-click 2014-to-Arcana Unleashed conversion. The reliable method is a controlled rebuild: keep the character’s concept, level goal, relationships and signature gear, then recreate species, class, subclass, background, spells, feats, items and derived numbers under the current 5.5e rules. Your Dungeon Master approves every ambiguous choice.

What conversion actually means

Arcana Unleashed is presented as a New 5.5e product, not as a compatibility patch for 2014 character sheets. The reviewed official material does not provide a numbered conversion table or a promise that every legacy feature has a direct replacement. Treat the process as rebuilding the same fictional character and play pattern in a different rules environment.

Wizards of the Coast’s Conversions to 5th Edition D&D, Version 1.0 (2015), describes conversion as “more art than science.” Its stated aim is to produce something that feels like the older-edition character rather than an exact replication, and it makes the DM the final arbiter. Those principles are especially important here because the target book adds new subclasses, factions, spells, feats and items without publishing a 2014-to-AU mapping.

Content Published quantity Conversion use
Subclasses 8 Possible replacements for a legacy subclass or a focused thematic layer
Arcane factions 9 Organizations that can replace or deepen a character’s affiliation
Backgrounds 10 New packages for skills, tools and narrative identity
New and revised spells 33 Functional or thematic substitutes for legacy spells
Feats 20+ Ways to preserve a signature capability or support a new build
Magic items 45+ Replacement, upgrade or re-themed equipment; some items evolve
Magical creatures 19 Useful for the DM when the converted character’s story involves AU creatures
Tomb of the Shadow Serpents One level-1 adventure Designed for one or two sessions; useful as a low-level conversion test

The eight named subclasses are Arcana Domain (Cleric), Arcane Archer (Fighter), Warrior of the Mystic Arts (Monk), Vestige Patron (Warlock), and the Wizard subclasses Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer and Transmuter. A character does not have to use one of them. If the closest current subclass preserves the concept better, keep it and use Arcana Unleashed material for spells, feats, factions or items.

Agree on the target campaign before changing the sheet

Do not rebuild in isolation. Write down the table’s assumptions first, because they determine what counts as a legal or sensible conversion.

  • Starting level: Confirm whether the character begins at the old level, at the campaign’s normal starting level, or at a level appropriate to an Arcana Unleashed adventure. The DM decides.
  • Allowed books: Ask whether every Arcana Unleashed option is available, which other 5.5e books remain legal, and whether legacy material is allowed only as a reference.
  • Setting: Establish whether the campaign is in the Forgotten Realms or another setting. A faction or background may need a different name, history or allegiance outside its assumed setting.
  • Legacy equipment: Decide whether 2014 magic items carry over unchanged, receive a current equivalent, or are retired and replaced with AU items.
  • Party role: State the job the character must still perform: front-line defender, ranged striker, controller, healer, scout, face, ritual specialist or another role.

Record these decisions on the first page of the conversion ledger. They prevent later arguments about whether a choice was a rules error or simply outside the campaign’s agreed scope.

Step-by-step conversion workflow

1. Freeze and inventory the 2014 character

Photograph or copy the original sheet before editing it. The 2014 Basic Rules organize the information you need around six ability scores, background, equipment, armor class, attacks and advancement. Make a complete inventory rather than relying on memory.

Record Why it matters
Level, class and subclass Sets the starting point for the rebuild and identifies features that may need a new home
Species or race and racial traits Separates the character’s identity from rules that may have changed
Six ability scores and proficiency bonus Preserves the baseline while you recalculate target-edition values
Saving throws, skills, languages and tools Shows the character’s competence profile and likely replacement proficiencies
Hit points, hit dice and armor class Provides a comparison point for survivability
Attacks, damage, spell attack and spell save DC Captures the ordinary actions that must still feel familiar
Prepared or known spells Identifies signature effects, concentration needs and action costs
Feats, equipment and magic items Preserves distinctive capabilities and resources
Personality, ideals, bonds and flaws Protects the character’s identity when mechanics change
Allies, enemies and intended party role Guides faction, background and story choices

2. Choose the target level and baseline

Set the level before selecting options. A same-level rebuild and a campaign-level rebuild can produce different ability scores, feats, spell access and equipment. Confirm whether the DM expects a fresh 5.5e character at that level or a conversion that retains the old character’s advancement history.

Use the target rules for every derived value. Keep the old numbers in a separate “before” column so you can spot a dramatic change, but do not treat the old armor class, attack bonus or spell DC as an entitlement.

3. Rebuild species and ability scores

Choose the current species that best expresses the old character’s identity and physical or cultural story. Do not paste 2014 racial traits into a current sheet when the target rules package those benefits differently. The conversion guidance recommends finding the closest match, replacing legacy racial traits with target-edition traits and swapping like-kind proficiencies when that better represents the character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retain the six 2014 scores as a reference, then apply the target rules’ ability-score and proficiency treatment. Recalculate all dependent values afterward. If a species choice changes a language, tool, movement option, resistance or other feature, write the decision and its narrative justification in the ledger.

  • NEW CHARACTER OPTIONS YOU’LL LOVE—Create unforgettable characters with 12 core classes, 48 intriguing subclasses, and 10 distinctive species. Buff up your character’s backstory with 16 compelling backgrounds and 75 fantastic feats

4. Rebuild class and subclass around the character’s job

Start with the class that reproduces both the party function and the fictional identity. You are not required to preserve the original class if another class expresses the same character more accurately under the target rules. For example, a legacy “spellblade” may be better represented by a different current class than by forcing an obsolete subclass feature into a new chassis.

Then compare the eight Arcana Unleashed subclasses:

  • Arcana Domain Cleric: for a divine character whose story centers on arcane knowledge or magical doctrine.
  • Arcane Archer Fighter: for a martial archer whose defining attacks are magical rather than merely ranged.
  • Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk: for a monk whose identity depends on overt supernatural techniques.
  • Vestige Patron Warlock: for a warlock whose pact is tied to a relic, remnant or persistent magical entity.
  • Conjurer Wizard: for summoning, portals and created manifestations.
  • Enchanter Wizard: for influence, charm and magical manipulation.
  • Necromancer Wizard: for death magic, spirits or the boundary between life and death.
  • Transmuter Wizard: for changing matter, bodies or physical properties.

If none fits, retain the closest current subclass and move the AU identity into the spell list, faction, feat and equipment selections. A thematic layer is preferable to a subclass that creates exception rules the table must constantly remember.

5. Rebuild the background and faction connection

Keep the character’s history, personality, bonds, ideals and flaws unless the player and DM intentionally revise them. Mechanically, select a target background with comparable skills and tools. The 2014 background model combines a feature with two skill proficiencies and, where applicable, languages or tools; the conversion guidance says an existing background can usually be molded to fit.

Arcana Unleashed’s nine factions and ten backgrounds are useful when the character’s story involves organized magic. Choose a faction because it explains what the character wants, owes or fears—not merely because it grants a convenient proficiency. If the campaign setting does not contain that faction, preserve the relationship and rewrite the organization’s name and history with the DM’s approval.

6. Audit spells, feats and magic items

Create three columns: keep unchanged, replace with a current equivalent, and re-theme or retire. For every spell, feat or item, check:

  • action type and reaction timing;
  • range, area and duration;
  • concentration or other ongoing-resource requirements;
  • damage, healing and saving-throw details;
  • prerequisites, rarity and attunement;
  • how the effect interacts with the target edition’s class and spell lists.

Arcana Unleashed provides 33 new or revised spells, more than 20 feats and more than 45 magic items. Some items are described as evolving, so an old signature item may be better represented by an AU item that grows with the character than by copying obsolete text. Preserve the function first: if the original item lets the character teleport, command undead, protect an ally or transform an object, find a target-rule effect that performs the same job before worrying about its name.

Never paste 2014 wording into a current sheet simply because the title is familiar. If a named spell or item has changed, use the target entry and note the replacement in the ledger.

D&D 2014 Player's Handbook (Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebook)
  • The essential rulebook for Dungeons & Dragons (5th edition)
  • Contains all the rules you need to know to play D&D
  • Step-by-step guide to creating and leveling up characters
  • Go-to player reference for over 350 spells, equipment, and more
  • 1 of 3 D&D Core Rulebooks—the Player’s Handbook (rules for playing the game), the Dungeon Master’s Guide (how to run the game), and Monster Manual (creatures to encounter in your game)

7. Recalculate every derived number

After the choices are fixed, rebuild the mechanical values from the target rules. Recalculate:

  • proficiency bonus and all proficiency-based modifiers;
  • hit points, hit dice and healing interactions;
  • armor class, initiative and movement;
  • weapon and spell attack bonuses;
  • damage, saving throws and skill checks;
  • spell attack modifier, spell save DC and prepared or known spells;
  • inventory, carrying limits and attunement slots where applicable.

No complete list of every current-core difference between 2014 and 5.5e is provided here, so verify each formula in the target rulebook instead of assuming that a familiar line on the old sheet is unchanged.

8. Run a practical table test

Before the campaign begins, ask the DM to test four representative situations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. one ordinary attack or cantrip;
  2. one signature class or subclass ability;
  3. one defensive reaction or emergency option;
  4. one typical spell or resource-intensive turn.

Compare the character’s action economy, resource demand, survivability, proficiency coverage and spell-list access with the rest of the party. This is a playability check, not proof of mathematical equivalence. The official conversion guidance explicitly treats conversion as judgment rather than exact replication.

9. Finish the conversion ledger

Add a short audit trail to the final sheet. Use one row for every non-obvious change.

Original element Target element Reason DM ruling
2014 species trait Current species feature Closest identity and function Approved, modified or replaced
Legacy subclass feature AU subclass, current subclass or feat Preserves party role and fiction Approved interpretation
Signature spell Current or AU spell Matches range, action and tactical purpose Final wording used
Magic item Current, AU or re-themed item Maintains capability and campaign rarity Attunement and rarity decision

Flag anything with no direct equivalent. A visible exception is easier to adjudicate at level-up than an undocumented house rule.

How to choose between two plausible rebuilds

When several options appear to fit, score them against the same questions rather than choosing by name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Question to ask
Party function Does the option still perform the job the group expects?
Fictional identity Would the character’s history and personality still make sense?
Action economy Does the build require more bonus actions, reactions or setup turns than before?
Resource demand Will it consume spell slots, charges, concentration or rests at a different rate?
Proficiency coverage Are the character’s defining skills, tools and saves retained?
Spell-list access Can the character still perform the signature magical tasks?
Survivability Has armor, hit points, defenses or escape capability changed materially?
Setting and faction fit Does the option belong in this world and campaign history?
Learning cost How many new exceptions and unfamiliar resources must the player track?

Prefer the option that preserves the defining play pattern with the fewest special rulings. A slightly less literal translation is usually easier for the whole table to run.

Common conversion failures and fixes

Copying the old sheet and changing only the heading

Symptom: the character still uses 2014 racial text, spell wording or item rules while the rest of the table uses current entries.

Fix: rebuild each rules-facing element and keep the old sheet only as a reference record.

Choosing a subclass before defining the job

Symptom: the character has an appealing magical theme but no longer fills the party role that made the original fun.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: state the required role first, then compare subclasses and current alternatives against it.

Preserving numbers instead of capabilities

Symptom: old attack bonuses, armor class or spell DC are forced onto a target-edition chassis.

Fix: preserve the capability—such as accurate archery, battlefield control or emergency healing—and recalculate the number from target rules.

Ignoring action and concentration changes

Symptom: the converted character looks balanced on paper but cannot use its signature abilities in the same turn or while maintaining its normal spell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: test one ordinary turn, one defensive turn and one resource-heavy turn with the DM before play.

Leaving faction and setting assumptions implicit

Symptom: a background or faction creates lore conflicts after the campaign starts.

Fix: name the faction relationship, location and obligations in the ledger and ask the DM to approve them.

Carrying over every magic item

Symptom: the converted character has more power, attunement pressure or unusual exceptions than the rest of the party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: classify each item as unchanged, current equivalent, AU replacement, re-themed or retired, then check rarity and attunement.

Book formats and listed prices

The official US marketplace lists the Arcana Unleashed rulebook at $59.99 in digital, physical and digital-plus-physical formats. The official FAQ lists an Arcana Unleashed Ultimate Bundle at $129.99, including the core expansion, Deadfall, a map pack and digital preorder bonuses. These prices and availability were checked October 19, 2026 and can change; they are not requirements for using a character-conversion method.

D&D Beyond lists the product’s character options and catalog entries. A Roll20 compendium listing supports an online-play route, but the available information does not establish partner-program terms. Use the format your DM and group have agreed to support.

When a conversion should become a new character

A controlled rebuild is still the right starting point, but a fresh character may be cleaner when the old build depends on a feature with no reasonable target equivalent, when its original class no longer expresses the player’s intended role, or when the campaign’s level and setting assumptions are completely different. Preserve the old character’s relationships, goals and signature imagery in the new design if those are the parts the player actually wants to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For every other case, retain the concept, document the substitutions and let the DM decide disputed points. That approach produces a playable Arcana Unleashed character without pretending that two editions are numerically identical.
