To control which websites an extension can access, change the site-access setting for that specific extension in your browser. Use click-to-allow or current-site access when you only need it occasionally, a selected-sites list when it should work automatically on a few sites, and all-sites access only when its features require it and you trust it. The controls and their scope differ by browser.

Choose the narrowest access that still lets the extension work

Site-access controls govern whether an extension’s requested website permissions can operate on matching pages. They are not a complete firewall: Chrome notes that changing extension site permissions does not affect lower-level network changes made through VPN or proxy settings (Google Chrome Help).

  • Click-to-allow: the extension does not have routine access to sites; you grant access when needed.
  • Current-site access: allow it to work on the site you are using, typically for the current open tab or window.
  • Selected sites: let it run automatically on a short list of sites.
  • All sites: permits access across websites covered by its requested permissions.

Chrome’s developer guidance recommends optional permissions where functionality allows, so users can make informed choices about access to resources and data (Chrome for Developers).

Change site access in Google Chrome

  1. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Find the extension and select Details.
  3. Under Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit, choose an available mode: On select, On specific sites, or On all sites.
  4. For an allow-list, choose On specific sites, then use Allowed sites to add or remove sites. If the list is not visible, first change the overall access mode to On specific sites.

For a temporary grant, open the Extensions menu and point to This can read and change site data. Chrome’s help calls the click-to-grant option On select; selecting the extension grants access to the current site in the open tab or window. You must select it again after closing that tab or window. The menu also offers current-site and all-sites access. Exact labels may vary with Chrome releases. See Google Chrome Help.

Change site access in Microsoft Edge

  1. Select Extensions beside the address bar. If it is hidden, open Settings and more > Extensions.
  2. On the extension, select … More actions, then point to This can read and change site data.
  3. Choose click-only, current-site, or all-sites behavior from the available options.
  4. For a site list or other controls, choose Manage extensions, open that extension’s Details, and inspect Site access. The support page describes automatically allowing access on specified sites.

Edge also lists separate Allow in InPrivate and Allow access to file URLs controls. Its click-only setting grants access to the current site in the open tab or window when you select the extension; after closing that tab or window, select it again to grant access anew. See Microsoft Support.

Review website permissions in Safari

In Safari, review an extension’s website access using Edit Websites, then set each listed site to Ask, Allow, or Deny. These are per-website choices; use the setting that matches whether you want Safari to ask, permit, or block the extension on that site. Apple’s documentation says that in Safari 17 and later, permission granted for a specific website applies across all profiles, private browsing, and browsing without a profile. Do not assume a grant is limited to one profile or private window in those versions. See Apple Developer Documentation.

Check permissions for an extension in Firefox

Firefox’s available controls depend on the add-on’s permission model and the options it exposes. To inspect them, open Add-ons and themes > Extensions, select the add-on, and review its permissions and settings. Some extensions have optional permissions that can be managed, but the available Mozilla documentation does not establish one universal browser-level, site-by-site allow-list for every add-on. Check the individual extension rather than assuming arbitrary site restrictions are available. See Mozilla’s Site Permissions panel and Manage optional permissions for Firefox extensions.

What changing site access does—and does not do

These settings limit whether an extension can use its requested host permissions on matching websites. They do not necessarily block every form of network activity by the extension: Chrome specifically says its site-permission changes do not affect lower-level network access changes through VPN or proxy settings. Treat site access as a way to reduce an extension’s access to pages, not as a guarantee that it cannot make any network request.
