You can limit Walmart’s shopping personalization and data sharing from the Walmart Privacy Center. Use Your Privacy Choices or Ad Choices to turn off interest-based advertising, enable Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser, and submit access, correction, deletion, or appeal requests where your jurisdiction provides them. These controls do not remove every advertisement: Walmart says ads may continue, but they should not be based on your interests after an opt-out.
Be especially careful with Walmart’s generative-AI shopping features. Walmart’s Terms of Use tell users not to enter sensitive, personal, proprietary, or confidential information because AI inputs can be collected, used, and retained to operate and improve the service.
Walmart says an opt-out applies immediately to data collected during the interaction, while information already held in its systems may take up to 15 days to process. The most durable approach is to combine an account-level choice with GPC in every browser and the advertising controls on each mobile device you use.
What Walmart’s privacy controls actually change
Walmart separates showing an advertisement from targeting an advertisement using your interests or activity. Opting out of interest-based advertising does not mean Walmart.com will become ad-free. Walmart’s Customer Privacy Notice says you may still see advertisements, but they may not be related to your interests.

The controls also differ in scope. A setting attached to an anonymous browser can cover only that browser on that computer. A choice made while signed in can be associated with your Walmart account and therefore cover more activity. Global Privacy Control can provide an additional browser signal, with broader account coverage when Walmart recognizes that you are logged in.

Start in the Walmart Privacy Center
The Privacy Center is Walmart’s central place for privacy actions. Open it and select the path that matches what you want to do:
- Privacy Requests: submit an access, correction, deletion, opt-out, or other request offered in your region.
- Your Privacy Choices: manage choices about the use and sharing of personal information.
- Ad Choices: manage Walmart interest-based advertising, including advertising delivered through Walmart’s demand-side platform on sites outside Walmart.com.
- Consumer Health Data Choices: review controls presented for consumer health data when that option is available to you.
If you have a Walmart account, sign in before making an account-level choice. A signed-in request gives Walmart a way to associate the choice with that account instead of treating it only as an anonymous browser preference.

Use the country or region selector, if shown, so the center displays the rights available where you live. Read the verification prompts carefully; Walmart may need to confirm that the request concerns you. Keep the confirmation screen, request number, and date. Those details are useful if you need to check status or appeal a denial.
Turn off Walmart interest-based advertising
Use the account-level advertising control
- Open the Walmart Privacy Center.
- Choose Your Privacy Choices or Ad Choices, following the label currently shown for your location.
- Sign in to your Walmart account when prompted.
- Find the setting for Walmart interest-based advertising or targeted advertising and submit the opt-out.
- Save or confirm the choice, then keep the confirmation details for your records.
Walmart says this setting can cover interest-based ads delivered by Walmart on Walmart.com and interest-based ads delivered through Walmart DSP on websites outside Walmart.com. It changes how ads are selected; it does not promise that advertising space will disappear.
Why an account setting is usually the stronger choice
A browser-only opt-out is tied to the current web browser on the current computer. If you use another browser, another computer, or a different device, Walmart says you must opt out there as well. Clearing saved cookies can also remove the browser choice, requiring you to repeat it. An account-level setting avoids relying solely on one cookie store, although you should still review the account confirmation and any device-specific controls.
For a household that shares a computer, remember that a browser-level preference can affect everyone using that browser, while an account choice follows the signed-in Walmart relationship. Conversely, if several people use one Walmart account, an account-level opt-out may affect the advertising experience for all activity associated with that account.
Use Global Privacy Control for a browser signal
Global Privacy Control is a browser privacy signal that tells participating services you want to opt out of targeted advertising and the sale or sharing of personal information. Walmart says it accepts GPC for those purposes.
Enable GPC
- Use a browser that offers a Global Privacy Control setting or a compatible privacy extension.
- Turn on the browser’s GPC option. The exact menu name and location depend on the browser version.
- Keep GPC enabled while visiting Walmart sites. The signal applies to the browser that sends it.
- If you use several browsers or devices, enable and verify GPC in each one.
- When possible, sign in to Walmart so the signal can be associated with your account. Walmart says the account-linked scope is broader than an anonymous browser signal.
Walmart states that it will display a notification when it receives a GPC signal or a request to opt out of sale or sharing, including for targeted advertising, and honors the request. A logged-in GPC signal can extend to the associated Walmart account. Walmart also says account-linked VIZIO OS products may be covered when the relevant current firmware supports that connection.

GPC is a signal, not a universal eraser. It does not delete your account, remove order records, or automatically submit an access or deletion request. Use Privacy Requests when you want to know what information Walmart holds, correct it, or ask for deletion.
Review advertising settings on your phone or tablet
Mobile operating systems provide their own controls for interest-based advertising. Walmart directs shoppers to their device settings for mobile advertising choices. Because menu labels change by operating-system version and manufacturer, use the advertising or privacy section in your current device settings rather than relying on an old path copied from another guide.

These device settings complement, rather than replace, your Walmart account choice. If you shop in a mobile app, on a mobile browser, and on a desktop browser, review each environment separately. An operating-system setting can limit the device’s advertising identifier, while Walmart’s account and Privacy Center controls govern choices Walmart associates with your shopping relationship.
Submit an access, deletion, correction, or opt-out request
From Privacy Requests in the Walmart Privacy Center, choose the request type offered for your location. Depending on jurisdiction, Walmart describes options to:
- request access to personal information Walmart holds about you;
- ask Walmart to correct inaccurate information;
- request deletion of personal information, subject to applicable exceptions;
- opt out of targeted advertising or sale and sharing of personal information; and
- use an appeal process if Walmart declines a request.
Regional law determines which choices appear and what verification Walmart requires. Follow the identity-verification instructions on the request form and save the request or confirmation ID. An access request is different from an advertising opt-out: the first asks Walmart to tell you what it holds, while the second changes how certain information may be used for advertising.
Appeal a denied request
Where an appeal is available, Walmart’s notices describe using the Privacy Request ID and, where requested, your ZIP code. Start from the appeal instructions associated with the original request so the appeal is connected to the correct case. Keep copies of the original request and Walmart’s response, because an appeal form may ask you to identify the denied request.

Walmart says an opt-out is immediately effective for data collected during the interaction in which the request or GPC signal is received. For other personal information already held in Walmart’s systems, processing the opt-out may take up to 15 days from receipt of the request.
This timing explains why personalization can appear briefly after you submit a request. It also explains why a browser test performed immediately after opting out may not show every change. Keep the confirmation and check again after the stated processing window if the behavior continues. If you submit multiple requests, use the newest confirmation as your reference but retain all records.
What opting out does not stop
- All advertising: Walmart says ads may still appear on Walmart.com and elsewhere. The intended change is that they should not be tailored to your interests under the opted-out processing.
- Every form of personalization: advertising choices are not necessarily a universal switch for recommendations, account functions, or every shopping feature.
- Data already held immediately: Walmart says older data can require up to 15 days to process against the new choice.
- Other browsers and devices: a browser-only choice does not automatically cover another browser or computer, and cookie deletion can require a repeat choice.
- Information needed to provide a service: Walmart notes that opting out can affect experiences that require personal information to function.
Walmart also states that it will not discriminate or retaliate against people for exercising privacy rights. That does not guarantee every feature will look identical after an opt-out; it means the company says it will not punish you for making the request.

Protect what you type into Walmart’s AI shopping features
Advertising opt-outs and AI-chat data handling are separate issues. Walmart’s Terms of Use for its Generative AI Features state: Do not share any sensitive or personal data, or any proprietary or confidential information with the Generative AI Features.
The same terms explain that inputs can be collected, used, and retained to answer questions, improve and maintain Walmart sites, develop new features and services, and for other purposes described in Walmart’s privacy policy. Treat an AI shopping conversation as information you are sending to a service, not as a private notebook.
Information to keep out of an AI prompt
- government identification numbers, payment-card numbers, account passwords, or authentication codes;
- medical details, precise health information, or another person’s sensitive data;
- private business documents, customer lists, unreleased plans, or confidential employer information;
- full addresses or other personal details that are unnecessary for the shopping question; and
- order numbers or screenshots that reveal names, delivery details, or payment information.
Safer ways to ask for shopping help
Describe the product need in general terms. For example, ask for “a waterproof backpack for a 15-inch laptop under a specified budget” instead of including your full name, delivery address, order number, or financial information. Remove identifying details before pasting text into an AI feature, and do not assume that deleting a chat immediately deletes all retained inputs.
If an assistant needs account-specific help, use Walmart’s normal signed-in account workflow rather than putting passwords, one-time codes, or payment details into the conversation. An AI feature may be able to answer a general product question without knowing who you are.
Walmart’s 2025 Retail Rewired report discusses privacy and security as important to adoption of agentic AI and describes increasingly personalized AI-powered customer solutions. It does not establish a separate consumer switch for every AI feature, so use the privacy controls that Walmart actually presents and follow the Terms of Use warning about inputs.

A practical sequence for maximum coverage
- Start signed in: open the Privacy Center while logged into the Walmart account you use for shopping.
- Make the account choice: submit the interest-based advertising or targeted-advertising opt-out under Your Privacy Choices or Ad Choices.
- Turn on GPC: enable it in every browser you use, including browsers on shared or secondary computers.
- Review mobile controls: check the advertising privacy setting on each phone or tablet and review the Walmart app and mobile browser separately.
- Record proof: save confirmations, request IDs, and the date of each submission.
- Wait for processing: allow up to 15 days for information already held in Walmart’s systems to be processed.
- Escalate if needed: submit an access, correction, deletion, or regional appeal request through Privacy Requests.
- Protect AI prompts: keep secrets and unnecessary personal details out of generative-AI features.
Troubleshoot a choice that does not appear to work
Ads are still visible
Check whether the ads are simply non-personalized. Walmart’s opt-out does not remove ad placements. Confirm that the opt-out confirmation was saved, then allow up to 15 days for previously held data to be processed.
Personalization returns after switching browsers
Repeat the browser choice or use the account-level control while signed in. A choice stored for one browser and computer does not automatically transfer to another.
The setting disappeared after clearing cookies
Clearing cookies can erase a browser-only opt-out. Reopen the Privacy Center and submit the choice again, then enable GPC so the browser sends the signal on future visits.
You cannot find a request or appeal option
Privacy rights and appeal procedures vary by jurisdiction. Check that the Privacy Center is showing the correct country or region, and use the request path presented for your location.

An AI assistant asks for order or identity details
Do not provide sensitive or confidential information merely because the assistant requests it. Use a general description, and handle account verification through Walmart’s normal signed-in account workflow rather than placing secrets in an AI prompt.
