Short answer: use a tab’s mute control when you only need silence. Firefox documents true per-tab muting; Chrome and Edge can mute through tab or site controls, depending on the installed version. None of these browsers documents a universal built-in slider that sets one tab to, for example, 30% while another remains at 100%. For separate numeric levels, use the website’s own player control or dedicated audio-routing software.
Mute is not the same as lowering volume
A mute command is a switch: audio from the targeted tab or site is silenced, while other browser audio continues. A volume control changes the loudness to an intermediate level. That distinction matters because the native controls documented for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox primarily provide mute and playback commands, not an independent gain slider for every tab.
- Need silence from one tab? Use the browser’s speaker icon or mute command.
- Need 30% in one tab and 100% in another? First look for a volume slider in the website’s own player. If there is none, you need an audio-routing or mixer application that exposes separate browser streams; browser tab mute alone cannot create those levels.
- Need to find which tab is making noise? Chrome’s Media control panel is designed for playback discovery and control, while Firefox marks a sounding tab with a speaker button.
Mute normally leaves media playing at its current position, so a podcast or video can continue advancing silently. A pause command stops playback instead. Check which action you are choosing when timing matters.

Mozilla Support documents Firefox’s tab-level behavior explicitly: when a tab is producing sound, Firefox displays a speaker button on that tab. Clicking the button mutes or unmutes that tab without muting unrelated tabs.

Mute one Firefox tab with the speaker button
- Start or locate the audio or video tab. A speaker icon appears on the tab while it is producing sound.
- Click the speaker icon. The tab is muted, and the icon changes to show its muted state.
- Click the same icon again when you want that tab’s audio restored.
This is tab-scoped: muting a YouTube tab, for example, does not mute a different tab playing a meeting or music. The control is available only while Firefox identifies the tab as producing sound; a page that has stopped playback may no longer show the speaker button.
Use Firefox’s keyboard shortcut
With the noisy tab active, press Ctrl+M to toggle mute for the current tab. Press Ctrl+M again to unmute it. Because the shortcut acts on the current tab, first click the tab you intend to change. If another application or an extension intercepts the keystroke, use the tab menu or speaker icon instead.
Mute from the tab context menu
- Right-click the tab that is playing sound.
- Choose Mute Tab. When it is already muted, the same command is shown as Unmute Tab.
Mozilla’s tab context menu describes this action as “Mute Tab/Unmute Tab: Mute or unmute audio in the selected tab.” The command changes audio output; it does not promise a numeric volume level or automatically pause the page’s media.
Mute several Firefox tabs together
- Select the tabs you want to affect by holding
Ctrlon Windows or Linux, orCommandon macOS, while clicking each tab. - Right-click one of the selected tabs.
- Choose Mute Tab.
The command applies to the selected tabs. To avoid muting an unintended tab, click an empty area of the tab strip or clear the multi-selection before continuing normal browsing.

Firefox limitations to know
Firefox’s hardware and media-key handling is not a general per-tab volume mixer. Its media controls target the last tab playing media, with a Picture-in-Picture exception, and they do not cover every kind of browser audio. In particular, the documented behavior excludes web-audio and web-speech content. If a page uses those APIs rather than a conventional media element, the speaker icon or media-key behavior may not match what you expect.
Chrome: find the source with Media controls, then check mute scope
Google Chrome Help documents a Media control button for “music, video, or anything that plays sound in a Chrome tab.” It is primarily a playback-control and discovery tool: use it to identify the tab producing sound, pause or resume media, move through supported media, or return to the source tab.
Use the Chrome Media control button
- Look for the Media control button in Chrome’s toolbar while a page is playing audio or video.
- Open it to see the active media session and the tab that owns it.
- Choose the source tab from the panel if you need to inspect the page directly.
- Use the panel’s playback buttons to pause or resume, or use the page’s own player for volume adjustment when available.
The panel does not document an independent volume slider for each tab. A pause command also differs from mute: pausing stops the media timeline, whereas muting only suppresses audible output when a mute control is available.
Check the tab context menu for “Mute site”
Chrome’s menu wording changes between releases. A recent Google Help Community answer instructs users to right-click a playing tab and choose Mute site, with Unmute site appearing after the site is muted. Because this wording comes from community guidance rather than a formal product specification, confirm the exact label in your installed Chrome version.

- Right-click the tab that is producing sound.
- If your release shows Mute site, select it.
- Return to the same menu and choose Unmute site when audio should return.
“Mute site” is a warning about scope. It may apply to the site rather than only the visible tab, so two tabs from the same domain can be affected. If one tab keeps going silent whenever you mute another, check whether both tabs belong to that site. Chrome also exposes site sound permissions, which can block or allow sound more broadly than a one-time tab action; review those permissions if a site remains silent after unmuting.
What about selecting several Chrome tabs?
The same community guidance describes selecting multiple tabs and choosing Mute. The command and its scope are release-sensitive, so treat it as a version-dependent convenience rather than a guaranteed, tab-isolated feature. Select tabs only when you have verified the menu label and tested which tabs change; if the menu says “Mute site,” expect site-level effects.
Chrome’s practical workflow
When you need to silence one source without losing your place, open Media controls, identify the source tab, switch to it, and use the available mute command. When you need two simultaneous numeric levels, bypass the browser menu and use the individual website player or an audio-routing tool instead. Chrome’s documented controls do not establish a universal per-tab gain slider.

Edge is Chromium-based, but its labels and behavior can change with Edge releases. The available evidence does not establish a single authoritative Microsoft description of the current tab-audio label or keyboard shortcut. Therefore, verify the command in the Edge build you are actually using before relying on a screenshot or support instruction.

Mute a sounding Edge tab
- Start playback and watch the tab strip for a speaker icon on the sounding tab.
- Click the speaker icon if Edge presents one. If there is no icon, right-click the tab.
- Look for a command containing Mute or Mute tab, then select it.
- Repeat the action, or choose the corresponding Unmute command, to restore audio.
Do not assume that a command labeled Mute site affects only the tab you can see. If Edge uses site-scoped wording, other tabs from that site may also become quiet. Test with two tabs from different sites before using the command during a live call or presentation.
When Edge does not show a mute command
Use the page’s own player to pause or lower volume, and check whether the tab is actually producing conventional media audio. If the tab is silent but the system still reports another source, open Edge’s media or playback controls if your version provides them. Since the exact Edge UI is version-sensitive, record the version number and verify the menu text before documenting a procedure for other users.

If you need separate volume percentages
Use the website’s own volume slider first
A player embedded in a video, music, meeting, or streaming site can often set its own level. That adjustment belongs to the site’s player, not to a browser-wide tab mixer. Set the level in each player and leave browser mute disabled unless you want complete silence. Player controls may disappear when the media is paused, the page is in a compact layout, or the site has moved them into an overflow menu.

An audio-routing or mixer application can expose separate streams and assign different levels, but compatibility depends on the operating system, browser build, audio driver, and the routing application. Configure and test it before a call or presentation. A generic USB volume knob changes the stream it is assigned to; it does not automatically identify arbitrary browser tabs. Likewise, a system mixer that shows one combined browser stream cannot isolate tabs that the browser has already merged.

Know when isolation is impossible
If two pages share one output stream and neither player has its own level control, the browser’s mute command can only switch the available source on or off. Do not expect a tab icon, a keyboard media key, or a hardware knob to create independent 30% and 100% levels without a separate per-stream mixer.
Troubleshooting tab-audio problems
“I muted one tab and another tab also went silent.”
- In Chrome or Edge, check whether the command was Mute site rather than Mute tab. Site-scoped muting can affect multiple tabs from the same site.
- Check whether both pages are actually the same site or share an embedded audio source.
- Unmute the site, then use the individual player’s pause or volume control if you need finer separation.
“I cannot find the speaker icon.”
- Confirm that the tab is currently producing sound; browsers may hide the icon after playback ends.
- Check the tab’s context menu for a mute command.
- Use the browser’s media panel, where available, to identify the active source.
- Remember that web-audio or web-speech content may not behave like a conventional media element, especially with Firefox’s documented media-key limitations.
“The tab is quiet, but the video keeps advancing.”
That is expected when you mute rather than pause. Return to the page or its media panel and choose pause if you need the timeline to stop.
“The shortcut did nothing in Firefox.”
Make sure the intended tab is active and that Firefox is the focused application. An extension, operating-system shortcut, or page-level key handler may intercept Ctrl+M. Use the speaker icon or the tab context menu to test whether the tab itself can still be muted.
“I need different loudness levels, not silence.”
Look for a volume slider inside each site’s player. If neither player provides one, a separate audio-routing or mixer application is the appropriate class of solution; browser mute controls alone cannot supply independent numeric gains.
A reliable workflow for meetings, music, and video
- Identify whether the requirement is silence, pause, or a percentage level.
- For Firefox, use the tab speaker icon,
Ctrl+M, or Mute Tab; use multi-selection only after selecting the intended tabs. - For Chrome, open Media controls to locate the source, then inspect the tab menu. Treat Mute site as potentially site-wide.
- For Edge, look for the speaker icon or mute command and verify the wording in the installed release.
- For numeric levels, adjust each website player first. Move to a dedicated audio mixer only when the players cannot provide the required separation.
- Test with every tab that must remain audible before starting the meeting, recording, stream, or presentation.
Firefox is the most explicit choice when the requirement is documented tab-by-tab muting. Chrome is strongest for locating and controlling active playback, but its current mute wording can be site-scoped and release-sensitive. Edge requires the most version checking. Across all three, a true independent volume slider for every tab is not documented as a universal native feature.
