On macOS 13 and later, manage these permissions in Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Review Files & Folders, Camera, and Microphone separately, then switch off access an app does not need. If you want to check access to a wider range of files, review Full Disk Access too.
Review and change app permissions in macOS 13 or later

Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.

Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar. Scroll down if you do not see it.

Open Files & Folders. Review the apps listed and switch off access to any locations an app does not need.

Open Camera, then Microphone, separately. For each category, review the apps shown and switch off permission where appropriate.

If you are concerned about access to a broad range of files, open Full Disk Access and review its app list as well.
macOS asks for permission when an app first requests access to a protected resource. You can change your choice later in Privacy & Security. Apple describes the permission controls in its guide to controlling what you share on Mac.

What each permission controls
| Setting | What it governs | How to think about its scope |

| Files & Folders | Access to particular protected locations, including Desktop, Documents, and Downloads. Apple also identifies iCloud Drive and network volumes among protected locations. | Location-specific. You can turn off access to a listed location without changing camera or microphone permissions. |
| Full Disk Access | Broad access to files, including information from other apps such as Mail, Messages, and Safari, Home data, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users. | Much broader than permission for an individual folder. Apple’s guide to controlling access to files and folders explains the location-based controls. Its Privacy & Security settings guide describes the available permission categories.
What the app lists do—and do not—show
The settings show apps that have requested access for the permission category. They are useful for reviewing and changing those permissions, but Apple’s documentation does not describe these lists as an exhaustive inventory of every way software could receive or access data. A permission applies to access on your Mac; if you allow a third-party app or website to collect information, that party’s own terms and privacy policy also apply.

Find the privacy controls on macOS 12 or earlier
Older versions use a different interface. On macOS 12 or earlier, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Apple documents the consent model for protected locations on macOS 10.15 and later, including Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes, in its Platform Security overview of file access, published 18 February 2021.

The list is based on apps that have requested access. If an app has not yet requested a protected resource, it may not appear there; the permission prompt typically appears when it tries to use that resource. If you later allow access, you can return to the relevant category in Privacy & Security to change the choice.
