A clap-controlled lamp uses a sound sensor to detect a clap, a controller or circuit to decide whether it matches the trigger, and a relay or other switch to change the lamp’s state. You can build a low-voltage demonstration with a microcontroller, sound sensor, and relay; a household mains lamp is a separate electrical installation that requires properly rated, enclosed equipment and qualified handling.

How clap-controlled lamp switches work

  1. Detect sound: A microphone or sound sensor converts changes in air pressure into an electrical signal.
  2. Separate a trigger from background noise: An amplifier or comparator measures the signal against a threshold. In one Arduino Corner design, an LM393 comparator and an adjustable threshold are used to detect a sufficiently strong sound (Arduino Corner tutorial, published April 25, 2026).
  3. Recognize the event and decide what to do: A microcontroller or pulse-shaping and latch circuit can interpret one clap or a sequence, then toggle an output or produce a timed pulse. A DFRobot project demonstrates pattern detection with an ATtiny85 (DFRobot project, published February 13, 2020); a separate circuit explanation describes amplifier, pulse-shaping, toggle-latch, and relay-driver stages (Earth Bondhon circuit explanation).
  4. Switch the lamp: A relay or another switching component changes the circuit supplying the load.

“Clap switch,” “sound-activated switch,” and “sound-operated light” describe related ideas, but a basic threshold sensor does not necessarily identify a clap. It may also react to another loud, sharp sound. Pattern recognition and sensitivity adjustment can help reduce unwanted triggers, but performance depends on the specific circuit and surroundings.

Microcontroller DIY example The Arduino Corner tutorial lists an Arduino Uno R3, LM393 sound-sensor module, one-channel 5 V relay, and jumper wires. It sets the sensor threshold with a potentiometer. The tutorial connects sensor OUT to a digital input and relay input to a controller output. These are details of that example, not universal pinouts or a guarantee that arbitrary modules are compatible. Use a low-voltage load for a first demonstration. The listed parts and wiring are tutorial-specific. The tutorial warns that relay load terminals can carry mains voltage.
ATtiny85 project DFRobot documents an ATtiny85, analog sound sensor, relay, and bulb project with threshold and timing logic. The design demonstrates sound-pattern detection and relay control; do not assume its wiring or behavior applies to another board or sensor. Project documentation was published February 13, 2020; it does not establish current availability of every component.
Velleman MK139 Manufacturer documentation describes one- or two-clap operation. It lists a 12 VDC, 150 mA supply and relay rated 24 VDC/AC, 3 A. It offers selectable pulse or toggle output. Velleman marks the MK139 discontinued and names the WSHA139 as its replacement. The MK139’s specifications should not be assumed to describe the replacement; check the replacement’s own documentation and local availability (Velleman MK139 product page).
The Clapper The reproduced manual describes two claps for one appliance, three for a second, sensitivity selection, and an Away mode. It is a purpose-built sound switch rather than a microcontroller wiring project; the reproduced manual does not establish electrical compatibility for every region or lamp. The manual reproduction does not establish current model availability or a universal operating distance. Range is model-specific (The Clapper manual reproduction).

Before choosing any device, check how many claps it expects, whether it toggles or produces a pulse, whether sensitivity is adjustable, how many outputs it controls, and whether its supply, contact rating, and load type match the intended lamp and local electrical system. A stated relay rating alone does not establish that a device is appropriate for a particular mains installation.

Build a safer low-voltage demonstration

The Arduino Corner example is a useful illustration of the parts involved, not a universal wiring recipe. Keep a first test on a suitably low-voltage LED or other low-voltage load. Follow the exact documentation for the board, sensor, and relay module you have; module pin labels and required connections can differ.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use the controller and sensor to detect the sound threshold or clap pattern.
  • Use the relay only to switch a compatible low-voltage demonstration load, observing the module’s documentation and ratings.
  • Adjust sensitivity so ordinary background sounds are less likely to activate the circuit, then test the behavior in the actual room.

The Arduino Corner tutorial specifically warns that the relay’s load-side screw terminals may carry lethal mains voltage. Disconnect power before working, keep mains wiring enclosed, and have an experienced person review it. That maker tutorial is not a substitute for local electrical codes or the installation instructions for a regulator-approved device. Do not treat a bare relay board or hobby circuit as ready for installation in a wall or connection to household mains.

What to check if it triggers incorrectly

  • It activates without a clap: The threshold may be too sensitive, or another sharp sound may resemble the trigger to a basic sound sensor. Adjust sensitivity if the design permits and test against normal room noise.
  • It misses claps: The clap may not cross the sensor’s threshold at the device’s location. Check the sensor’s setup and threshold adjustment, and remember that room conditions and design affect detection.
  • It switches in the wrong pattern: Confirm whether the device expects one clap, a sequence, or a timed pattern, and whether its output is configured to toggle or pulse.
  • The lamp or load is unsuitable: Verify voltage, current, load type, and enclosure requirements against the device documentation. A relay contact figure by itself is not a complete compatibility check.
