You can control a Fire TV Cube by saying its wake word or holding the Fire TV remote’s Voice button to speak to Alexa. Use the remote’s directional ring and Select button to move through menus and choose items: the Voice button does not make on-screen selections. If you want Alexa to control a cable or satellite box, the setup depends on whether that box connects to your TV or to the Cube’s HDMI IN.
Use Alexa on the Fire TV Cube
Say the Cube’s wake word to make a hands-free request, or press and hold the Voice button on the Fire TV remote while speaking. Amazon’s Fire TV Cube help page says the remote’s voice button does not support voice navigation commands or making on-screen selections.
For requests such as opening an app or searching for a title, hold the Voice button and say what you want—for example, “Open [app name]” or “Find [movie title].” Alexa can also control playback. Feature availability can vary by country; see Amazon’s Fire TV voice-command guidance.
For volume, use the buttons on top of the Cube or say “Volume” followed by a number from 1 to 10. To disable the Cube’s microphone, press the Mute button on top; its light turns red.

Navigate and select with the TV remote
Use the directional ring to move through the Fire TV interface and the Select button to choose a highlighted item. Holding the Voice button starts an Alexa request, but it is not a substitute for these physical navigation controls.
Set up Alexa control for a cable or satellite box
First identify how the box is wired. Follow the TV-connected instructions if the box’s HDMI cable goes to the TV; follow the HDMI IN instructions if it goes directly to the Cube. These are different setup flows, and Amazon documents the direct HDMI IN method for third-generation Fire TV Cube.

If the set-top box is connected to the TV
- On Fire TV, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > Add Equipment > Live TV > Set-top box.
- Choose Satellite or Cable, then select your provider.
- When prompted, use the TV remote to switch the television to a live channel.
- Press Fast Forward on the Fire TV remote and follow the remaining on-screen prompts.
Amazon says the Cube and set-top box need line of sight for this control path. Its examples of commands after setup include “Tune to CNN,” “Channel up,” “Channel down,” “Tune to [channel number] on cable,” “Go up / down,” “Move left / right,” “Select,” “Open program guide,” and “Play / Pause.” These are examples, not a guarantee that every provider and box supports every command. If the set-top box is connected to the Cube’s HDMI IN
- From the Fire TV menu, open Inputs, highlight the HDMI tile, and press Menu on the Fire TV remote.
- Choose Change Device Name, then select Cable or Satellite.
- Choose your provider, or select Provider not listed, and complete the on-screen connection test.
For this connection, Amazon specifies line of sight between the Cube and box and a high-speed HDMI cable rated at 18 Gbps or higher. If setup does not work, Amazon notes that HDMI control may need to be turned off in the set-top box’s own settings; consult its manual for the device-specific path. Check provider and model compatibility
Amazon’s supported-provider list names Comcast Xfinity, Charter Spectrum, DirecTV, Dish Network, Verizon Fios, Cox, Altice Optimum/Suddenlink, AT&T U-verse, Frontier, Mediacom, CenturyLink, Inc., and GCI Communication. Being listed does not establish compatibility with every box model or setup. Amazon notes that some DISH box models require IR control.
Amazon’s developer specifications cover Fire TV Cube generations from the first generation (2018) through the third generation (2022). They list HDMI 2.1 input, HDMI 2.1 output (ARC), and an IR extender for the third-generation model. The direct HDMI IN instructions above are specifically for that generation; owners of older Cubes should use the options presented on their own device. Troubleshoot control problems
- Alexa will not navigate the screen: Use the directional ring and Select button. The Voice button does not make on-screen selections.
- Set-top box commands do not work: Confirm whether the box connects to the TV or Cube HDMI IN, then use only the matching setup flow.
- The box is not responding: Check line of sight between it and the Cube. For HDMI IN, also verify the cable is rated at 18 Gbps or higher.
- HDMI IN setup fails: Check the set-top box settings or manual for whether HDMI control must be disabled.
- Your provider is missing: Check Amazon’s supported-provider list. A listed provider does not guarantee support for every model; some DISH boxes specifically require IR control.
