Do not combine inherited deposits until you have mapped each account by insured bank, legal owner, ownership category, beneficiaries and balance. FDIC insurance is calculated by depositor, insured bank and ownership category—not by the number of account numbers. Moving an estate balance into an heir’s existing account can merge it with that heir’s other single-account deposits and leave part of the total uninsured.
Keep decedent and estate funds identifiable while the estate is administered. An estate or decedent account is generally insured as one single account up to $250,000; beneficiaries named in a will do not convert it into a trust account. Properly documented payable-on-death (POD), in-trust-for (ITF) and formal trust deposits use the trust-account rules instead. A six-month post-death rule can temporarily preserve the deceased owner’s prior calculation, but it is a planning window, not a reason to delay.
What FDIC insurance is actually measuring
For each deposit, ask three questions:
- Who is the legal depositor or owner?
- Which FDIC-insured bank holds the deposit?
- Which ownership category does the bank’s account record establish?
The basic limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per applicable ownership category. Several accounts at one bank do not receive separate limits merely because they have different account numbers, product names or branch locations. Balances in the same category are combined for the calculation.
Coverage applies to deposit products such as checking accounts, savings accounts, money-market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit. The bank’s legal entity matters; use the institution’s legal name from statements and account agreements rather than a branch or marketing name.

| Situation | Category used for the calculation | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Account titled to the deceased person or “Estate of …” | Generally a single account | Balances of that owner at the same insured bank are aggregated, generally up to $250,000. |
| POD or ITF account | Trust account, if the bank’s records specifically name eligible beneficiaries | Coverage is calculated by owner and beneficiary under the trust rules. |
| Formal revocable or irrevocable trust deposit | Trust account | Trust terms, owner/grantor information and beneficiary records affect the calculation. |
| Heir’s personal account after distribution | The heir’s own ownership category, usually single ownership | The inherited money joins the heir’s other deposits in that category at that bank. |
FDIC insurance does not decide who owns property under a will, trust, probate order, marital-property law or tax law. It describes how the deposit is insured after the bank identifies the account’s legal ownership.
Why an estate account is not automatically a trust account
An executor may hold money for several heirs, but that does not give the estate the trust-account limit. The FDIC states: “Although an estate may have beneficiaries, a decedent account is not eligible for deposit insurance coverage as a Trust Account or for pass-through insurance to the beneficiaries.”
Therefore, an account titled to the decedent or the estate is generally treated as one single account. A $600,000 estate balance at one insured bank is not made fully insured by listing three heirs in a will. The will governs distribution; it is not a POD designation in the bank’s deposit records.

Do not retitle an estate deposit to an heir, trustee or joint owner merely to obtain a different insurance calculation. That can change legal ownership, fiduciary duties, tax reporting and the estate’s ability to document every distribution.
Inventory every inherited deposit before moving money
Create one line for every account, including accounts at the same bank. Obtain current balances and the bank’s exact title from statements or an official account record.
| Inventory field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Institution | Legal bank name and confirmation that it is FDIC-insured |
| Account identifier | Account number, product type and maturity date for a CD |
| Balance | Current principal, accrued interest if shown, and date measured |
| Legal title | Decedent’s name, “Estate of” title, individual heir, joint owners, POD/ITF wording or trust name |
| Owners and fiduciaries | Named owner(s), executor, trustee, grantor and successor trustee where applicable |
| Beneficiaries | Every beneficiary exactly as shown in the bank’s deposit-account records, including percentages or classes |
| Documents | Death certificate date, probate appointment, trust certification, account agreement and beneficiary form |
| Timing | Date of death, CD maturity, planned distribution date and any six-month deadline |
Ask the bank to identify the ownership category it is using for each account. A family ledger, a will, a probate appointment or an informal understanding cannot replace the institution’s account records for deposit-insurance purposes.

Classify the accounts before consolidation
Decedent or estate account
This is an account titled to the deceased owner or to the estate. It is generally a single account with up to $250,000 of coverage at one insured bank. The estate’s heirs do not receive separate trust coverage simply because they are named in estate documents.
POD or ITF account
POD and ITF arrangements are informal revocable trusts. They receive trust-category treatment only when the beneficiaries are specifically named in the bank’s deposit-account records. The FDIC’s wording is explicit: “For an informal revocable trust account, such as a payable on death account, to be insured under the Trust Accounts category, the beneficiaries must be specifically named in the IDI’s deposit account records.”
A will that says “leave everything to my children” is not the same as a beneficiary designation recorded on a POD account. Request a copy or written confirmation of the bank’s beneficiary record.
Formal trust deposit
A deposit owned by a revocable or irrevocable trust is evaluated under the trust-account rules. The bank may require a trust certification, the trust instrument or other evidence of the grantor, trustee and beneficiaries. The exact title and documents matter, especially after a trustee or grantor dies.
Joint account with beneficiary language
An account that combines joint ownership with a beneficiary designation can be treated as a trust account rather than a joint account when the beneficiary designation is effective under the bank’s records. Do not assume the label “joint” controls; obtain the bank’s written category determination.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHeir’s personal account
Once money is legally distributed to an heir, it normally becomes part of that heir’s own ownership category. At the receiving bank, the inherited amount is added to the heir’s other single accounts for the $250,000 calculation. It does not receive a new limit simply because it came from an estate.

Calculate the limit before you transfer
Single-account calculation
Add all single-owner deposits for the same owner at the same insured bank. For example, if an heir already has $180,000 in savings and receives $100,000 from an estate into another individual account at that bank, the combined $280,000 exceeds the generally applicable $250,000 limit for that category. Opening a second savings account at the same bank does not separate the coverage.
Accounts at different insured banks are analyzed separately, but confirm that the institutions are legally distinct insured banks. Do not rely on different branches or different account products as proof of separate coverage.
Trust-category calculation
For properly documented POD, ITF and formal trust deposits, the general rule is $250,000 per eligible beneficiary per trust owner. When five or more beneficiaries are named, the maximum is generally $1,250,000 per owner. The beneficiary must be eligible under the applicable trust rules and identified in the bank’s records.
| Example at one insured bank | Trust-owner and beneficiary facts | General coverage calculation |
|---|---|---|
| $400,000 POD deposit | One owner, two eligible beneficiaries recorded | Up to $500,000 under the beneficiary formula, subject to the bank confirming the account qualifies. |
| $1,300,000 trust deposit | One owner, five eligible beneficiaries recorded | Generally capped at $1,250,000 for that owner. |
| Two trust deposits at the same bank | One owner, the same three beneficiaries on both records | The beneficiaries are not counted twice; combine the trust-category deposits for that owner. |
| One deposit remains in the estate and one is POD | Same decedent, but different legal titles | Analyze the estate balance as a single account and the documented POD balance under trust rules; do not merge the categories without checking the bank’s records. |
Do not count the same beneficiary twice for the same trust owner at the same bank. If ownership, beneficiary status or the number of owners is unclear, treat the calculation as unresolved until the bank provides a written answer.
Use the six-month post-death period deliberately
The FDIC states: “Upon the death of an accountholder, the FDIC will insure the deceased owner’s accounts as if he or she were still alive for six months after his or her death.” This temporary treatment can preserve the deceased owner’s prior calculation while the estate or trust is being administered.
The six months begin with the owner’s death, not with the date you discover the account or receive a death certificate. The rule is a time-limited accommodation; it is not a permanent extra $250,000 limit and does not eliminate the need to retitle or distribute funds.

During that period:
- Obtain certified death certificates and submit them through the bank’s estate or trust department.
- Secure probate appointment papers, a trust certification or other documents the bank requests.
- Confirm every POD/ITF beneficiary in the institution’s deposit records.
- Ask for a written calculation showing the owner, bank and category used.
- Decide whether each balance will remain estate property, remain trust property or be distributed to a named heir.
- Schedule CD maturities and transfers so an unresolved account does not roll into a different title or owner without review.
Because the calculation can change when the period ends, set a calendar deadline well before the six-month date.

Step-by-step consolidation workflow
- Freeze informal combining. Do not move inherited deposits into a personal account, close an account or change a beneficiary until the inventory and legal authority are documented.
- Build the inventory. Record the fields in the inventory table for every checking, savings, money-market deposit account and CD.
- Separate the legal buckets. Keep decedent or estate funds distinct from an heir’s money and from trust deposits. Use an estate account for estate administration only when the executor and bank have established that title.
- Request bank records. Ask each institution for the exact title, ownership category, recorded beneficiaries, current balance and any documents needed to retitle or distribute the account.
- Calculate before choosing a destination. At each bank, total single accounts for the same owner. Separately total trust-category deposits by owner and unique eligible beneficiary, applying the $1,250,000 per-owner cap when five or more beneficiaries are named.
- Apply the six-month timetable. Note each owner’s date of death, obtain documents and complete the bank’s review before the temporary treatment expires.
- Select the receiving structure. If a distribution belongs to an heir, transfer it to an account titled to that heir only after confirming the heir’s resulting total. If funds remain estate or trust property, preserve that title and category.
- Recalculate after settlement. Recheck totals after checks clear, wires settle, CDs mature, beneficiaries change or another owner dies. Keep the bank’s written determination with the estate records.
Choosing where consolidated money should go
| Goal | Appropriate structure to evaluate | Insurance question |
|---|---|---|
| Pay estate expenses and later distribute proceeds | Estate account titled and administered as the bank requires | Is the entire estate balance within the single-account limit at that bank? |
| Hold assets for beneficiaries under a trust | Trust account with trustee authority and verified beneficiaries | How many eligible beneficiaries and trust owners does the bank recognize? |
| Deliver a beneficiary’s share | Account in the beneficiary’s legal name | What other single-account deposits does that beneficiary already have at the receiving bank? |
| Keep a large balance temporarily | More than one legally distinct insured bank or a properly documented ownership structure, subject to professional advice | Are the institutions and categories genuinely separate under FDIC rules? |
Spreading money across several account numbers at one bank is not the same as using separate insured banks or separate ownership categories. A transfer can merge a new balance into an existing category immediately, so perform the calculation before initiating it.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it creates risk | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Putting an estate check into an heir’s existing savings account | The amount may be added to the heir’s other single accounts. | Calculate the heir’s total first and use a properly titled estate or distribution account while the transfer is pending. |
| Assuming each account number has a separate $250,000 limit | Same-owner accounts in one category at one bank are aggregated. | Group deposits by owner, bank and category. |
| Using a will’s beneficiary list as a POD designation | Estate beneficiaries do not create trust-account coverage. | Verify beneficiaries in the bank’s deposit-account records. |
| Counting a beneficiary twice because the person appears on two trust accounts | The trust calculation uses unique beneficiaries for the same owner at the same bank. | Combine the deposits and count each eligible beneficiary once. |
| Waiting until the six-month date | The temporary post-death calculation may no longer apply. | Set an earlier deadline for documents, written calculations and transfers. |
| Relying on a family spreadsheet without bank confirmation | Informal records may not establish the legal title or category. | Obtain the institution’s written ownership-category determination. |
| Changing title to increase apparent coverage | Retitling can alter ownership, fiduciary obligations and tax reporting. | Get legal and tax advice before changing an estate or trust structure. |
What to request from the bank in writing
Send a concise request to the bank’s estate, trust or deposit-insurance team. Ask it to identify:
- The bank’s legal insured entity and the accounts included in its calculation.
- The legal owner and ownership category for every account.
- All beneficiaries recorded for POD, ITF or trust deposits.
- The aggregate balance used for each category.
- The date on which any six-month post-death treatment ends.
- The documents and signatures required for retitling, distribution, renewal or closure.
- Whether a proposed transfer will combine the money with an existing owner or category.
Keep the response, account statements, beneficiary forms and transfer confirmations with the executor’s or trustee’s records. If the bank cannot classify an unusual title, ask for escalation to its deposit-insurance specialists rather than making an assumption based on the account’s everyday name.
Situations that need extra care
Several heirs receiving unequal shares
First preserve the estate’s title and calculate the estate account as a single account. After the executor distributes specific amounts, evaluate each heir’s new balance with that heir’s existing deposits. Unequal inheritances do not change the estate category while the funds remain estate property.

A CD matures during administration
Record the maturity date in the inventory. Before renewal or moving the proceeds, ask whether the renewal changes the title, owner, beneficiary record or category. A maturity event is a useful checkpoint for obtaining an updated written calculation.
A second owner dies while funds are being consolidated
Notify the bank promptly and obtain the new six-month deadline and category analysis. Do not assume the first owner’s temporary treatment continues unchanged after another death.
Trust documents and bank records do not match
Pause the transfer. The bank may need a trust certification, an amended instrument, a court order or updated beneficiary form. A trustee’s interpretation of the document does not by itself revise the bank’s deposit records.

Legal, tax and ownership limits of this guide
FDIC rules answer how a qualifying deposit is insured; they do not determine whether an executor may distribute it, whether a trust amendment is valid, who owns marital property or how an inheritance is taxed. Bank procedures can require additional documents and may classify an unusual title differently from a family’s description.
Before retitling, distributing or moving a balance that could affect estate rights, fiduciary duties or tax reporting, consult the executor’s or trustee’s licensed attorney and tax professional. Ask the bank for its written category determination first so those advisers are working from the same account facts.
