To use a Windows PC’s desktop from a Samsung tablet, enable Remote Desktop on a Windows Pro host, note its PC name, then add that PC in the Remote Desktop app on the tablet and sign in with an authorized account. This is different from Phone Link, which brings selected mobile features to a PC rather than letting the tablet control the Windows desktop.
Check that the Windows PC can host a Remote Desktop connection
On the PC you want to access, open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, check Edition. Microsoft’s built-in Remote Desktop host workflow requires the remote PC to run Windows Pro. A tablet running Android can act as the client; it does not need to run Windows.
If the host PC runs Windows Home, it does not meet the prerequisite for this documented built-in host workflow. Changing a setting on the tablet will not address that limitation.
Enable Remote Desktop and find the PC name
- On the Windows PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn on Remote Desktop and confirm the prompt.
- Note the PC name shown on that page. You will enter it in the tablet’s Remote Desktop client.

Connect from the Samsung tablet
- On the tablet, open the Remote Desktop app Microsoft directs Android users to get from Google Play. The exact app listing name and regional availability can vary; Microsoft’s support page points Android users to the store but does not establish that the same listing is available in every country.
- Add a PC in the app and enter the Windows PC name you recorded.
- Select the PC and wait for the connection.
- Sign in with an account authorized to access the Windows host.
When connected, Microsoft describes the experience as accessing the remote PC’s apps, files, and desktop as if sitting in front of it. See Microsoft’s connection steps and its Remote Desktop overview.
Remote Desktop or Phone Link?

Phone Link is not the setup path for controlling the Windows desktop from the tablet. Device support for Phone Link is specific to model, Android version, and market; Microsoft lists supported Samsung tablets and feature qualifications on its supported devices page. Microsoft’s separate Phone Link setup instructions explain that feature’s pairing process.

If the tablet cannot connect or find the PC
- On the host, confirm Remote Desktop is still turned on.
- Check the PC name entered in the tablet app against the name shown in Windows settings.
- Make sure the tablet can reach the PC over the network in use. The basic Microsoft setup instructions do not say both devices must always be on the same Wi-Fi network; the same-Wi-Fi condition cited for Phone Link should not be treated as a universal Remote Desktop requirement.
- Verify that you are signing in with an account authorized on the host.
If the devices are on different networks, network reachability must be configured for that situation. The basic setup steps do not establish a safe configuration for every home, workplace, or managed network. Ask your network administrator or consult current Microsoft networking guidance; do not expose Remote Desktop directly to the public internet based on these basic instructions alone.
