Connect the PS5 Access controller to your console with the included USB cable, complete the pairing steps, then plug compatible accessibility hardware into one of its four 3.5mm expansion ports. The ports are labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4 from left to right. After inserting a switch, trigger or stick plug, assign that input in an Access controller profile on the PS5.

The USB socket has a different job: it connects the controller to the PS5, charges it and receives device-software updates. It is not a USB accessory hub, so a USB adaptive switch or other USB peripheral cannot be connected through it.

What connects to the PS5 Access controller

The Access controller accepts compatible third-party accessibility devices through four 3.5mm expansion sockets. These sockets are intended for external controls such as buttons, switches, trigger-style controls and analogue sticks. Each connected device must be mapped to a command in an Access controller profile before it will perform an in-game action.

Expansion-port layout

Viewed from left to right, the ports are:

  1. E1
  2. E2
  3. E3
  4. E4

Push the plug all the way into the selected socket. A partially inserted 3.5mm plug can produce an intermittent or missing input even when the accessory itself is functional.

Supported device categories

Device type What it supplies Typical plug arrangement Best suited to
Button device Digital on/off signal Two-contact 3.5mm plug Press-and-release actions, large external buttons and switches
Trigger device One-axis analogue signal Four-contact 3.5mm plug Variable input such as acceleration, braking or a pressure-sensitive control
Stick device Two-axis analogue signal Four-contact 3.5mm plug Movement on horizontal and vertical axes

These categories describe the electrical interface, not a guarantee that every commercial product will work. Sony warns that not all third-party devices are compatible, so check the exact model’s connector, signal type and compatibility guidance before buying.

Requirements before you begin

  • A PS5 console that has completed its initial setup.
  • A DualSense wireless controller already paired with the console for the first-time setup.
  • The USB cable supplied with the Access controller.
  • A compatible third-party button, switch, trigger or stick with a 3.5mm plug.
  • A user account selected during pairing.

The Access controller pairs with one PS5 console at a time. It is designed for PS5 only; Sony states that it is compatible with only PlayStation 5 consoles. A device that works as a generic PC or mobile accessibility control is not automatically compatible with the Access controller.

Connect and pair the Access controller

  1. Turn on the PS5. Let the console reach the normal home screen.
  2. Connect the Access controller with the included USB cable. Use this wired connection for the initial pairing and charging process.
  3. Press the PS button on the stick base. The controller’s stick base contains the PS button used to begin pairing.
  4. Select a user. Choose the account that will use the controller.
  5. Follow the on-screen setup instructions. The initial setup uses the base profile and guides you through the controller’s basic configuration.
  6. Allow the controller to charge. Pairing can remain wired while the battery charges.
  7. Disconnect the USB cable if you want wireless operation. The controller can then be used wirelessly with the paired PS5.

Do not plug the third-party accessory into the USB socket during this process. Accessories belong in E1 through E4 after the Access controller has been paired.

Plug in a switch, trigger or stick

  1. Choose an expansion port. Select E1, E2, E3 or E4 according to the physical layout you want. The port number does not by itself determine the game command.
  2. Confirm the accessory type. A digital button should use the button-device arrangement; a variable trigger or two-axis stick should use the corresponding analogue arrangement specified by its maker.
  3. Insert the 3.5mm plug fully. Stop only when the connector is seated firmly. Do not force a plug that does not match the socket or accessory specification.
  4. Open the Access controller profile settings on the PS5. Use the profile-editing controls supplied by the console’s Access controller setup.
  5. Assign the new input. Select the port or detected control and map it to the desired button, stick direction or other available command.
  6. Test the assignment. Operate the accessory in the profile screen or a suitable game menu, then adjust the mapping if the action is uncomfortable or incorrect.

Port numbers are physical labels, not fixed meanings. You can use E1 for a foot switch, E2 for a hand button or another arrangement, provided the accessory’s signal type is supported and the profile maps it correctly.

Map controls in Access profiles

Mapping is what turns an electrical signal into a PS5 command. A newly connected switch will not necessarily perform the action you expect until it is assigned in a profile.

Use a profile that matches the player’s movement

  • Assign frequently used actions to controls that can be reached without changing posture.
  • For a digital switch, choose a single command that responds to an on/off press.
  • For a trigger, assign an action that benefits from an analogue range rather than treating it as a simple button.
  • For a stick, verify both axes and their directions; an incorrect orientation can make movement feel reversed.
  • Test the control with the accessory mounted in its real position, because reach and force can change once it is attached to a chair, tray or tabletop.

The PS5 console can store up to 30 individual Access controller profiles. Three profiles can also be stored on the Access controller for quick switching. This lets one physical arrangement support different games or different players without rewiring every accessory.

USB accessories: what the port can and cannot do

The USB port is reserved for the PS5 connection, charging and device-software updates. Sony’s official wording is: “The USB port is used to connect the controller to your PS5® console to charge and update the device software. It does not support USB-based third-party accessories.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, a USB adaptive switch, USB hub, USB joystick or powered USB button cannot be used by plugging it into the Access controller. Look for a compatible 3.5mm accessibility device instead. The expansion sockets also do not provide power to peripherals, so a device that requires electrical power from the controller is outside the supported design.

How to choose a compatible third-party device

Compatibility depends on more than the presence of a 3.5mm plug. Compare the accessory’s signal, contact arrangement, power needs and physical design with the Access controller’s requirements.

Check the connector and signal

Check What to verify Why it matters
Device class Button, one-axis trigger or two-axis stick The controller interprets digital and analogue signals differently.
Contact count Two-contact plug for a button device; four-contact plug for trigger or stick devices, where specified The contacts carry different signal arrangements.
Power requirement The accessory must not require power from the expansion port The expansion ports are not power outlets.
Mapping capability The desired input must be exposed to the Access profile A physically connected device is useful only if its signal can be assigned.
Manufacturer guidance Exact model compatibility and any required adapter Sony does not guarantee every commercial 3.5mm device.

Consider physical ergonomics

Choose controls according to the player’s available movement, not just the connector. Compare the force needed to activate a button, the travel of a trigger, the size of the control, mounting options and whether the player can operate it consistently from the intended position. A switch that is electrically suitable may still be impractical if it requires more reach or force than the player can comfortably provide.

Named accessory example

Sony’s Access controller product information lists the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access controller as a related product. It is an example of the kind of external button hardware the expansion ports are intended to accommodate, but availability, included parts and exact compatibility can vary. Verify the current product specification and the particular kit’s connector requirements before purchase.

  • Plug arrangements: two-contact for button devices and four-contact for trigger or stick devices as defined by the specification.

These values are engineering guidance, not a promise that a homemade circuit will work safely or reliably. Ordinary buyers should follow the accessory maker’s compatibility information rather than treating an individual resistance or voltage measurement as a universal approval.

Controller combinations and feature limits

Use more than one controller

A PS5 system can use up to two Access controllers together. You can also combine one or two Access controllers with a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller. This allows controls to be divided between two Access units or shared with a conventional controller, depending on the player’s needs.

Know which PlayStation features are unavailable

The Access controller supports the touch-pad button, but not the touch pad’s touch surface. It also does not support vibration, adaptive triggers, motion sensing, the built-in speaker, microphone, mute button or headset audio. These limitations affect game features independently of any external switch you attach, so remapping a missing feature cannot restore it.

Keep software current

Access controller device software updates are delivered through PS5 console system-software updates. Keep the console updated and leave the controller connected when an update requires it. There is no separate USB accessory workflow for updating a third-party switch; the third-party device remains connected through its 3.5mm expansion port.

Troubleshoot a switch or accessory that does not work

The PS5 does not react at all

  • Confirm that the Access controller completed pairing with the PS5 and that the correct user is signed in.
  • Remove and firmly reinsert the 3.5mm plug.
  • Try the accessory in another expansion port to distinguish a port-selection issue from an accessory issue.
  • Check the accessory maker’s documentation for the required device class and plug arrangement.
  • Confirm that the device does not need power supplied by the controller.

The control appears but performs the wrong action

  • Return to the Access controller profile settings and inspect the assignment for that port.
  • For a stick, check both axis directions and whether the game expects the opposite orientation.
  • For a trigger, verify that the game is receiving a variable axis rather than a digital button signal.
  • Save or activate the edited profile before leaving the settings screen.

The input cuts in and out

  • Check that the plug is fully seated and that the cable is not pulling sideways on the socket.
  • Test the same accessory in a different port.
  • Inspect the plug and cable for physical damage.
  • If the problem follows the accessory to every port, contact its manufacturer; if it remains with one port, stop using that port and seek hardware support.

A USB accessory is not detected

This is expected for USB-based third-party hardware because the controller’s USB socket is not designed to accept it. Use a supported 3.5mm device instead.

The controller works on another platform but not on PS5

Platform compatibility is not transferable. The Access controller is PS5-only, and a third-party device must also match the Access controller’s supported electrical and connector arrangement.

Practical connection examples

Single external button

Plug the two-contact button into E1, assign E1 to the desired command in an Access profile, and test the button from the player’s normal seating position. If the button is mounted away from the controller, secure the cable so accidental tension cannot loosen the plug.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two external buttons for separate actions

Connect the first button to E1 and the second to E2. Assign each port independently. The ports do not need to be consecutive for any technical reason; choosing adjacent ports simply makes the wiring easier to identify.

Analogue stick plus trigger

Connect the compatible four-contact stick and trigger to two available expansion ports. Assign the stick’s two axes and the trigger’s single axis separately, then test movement and graduated trigger response in the profile or a game that exposes those controls.

Foot switch

A foot-operated control can be used when it presents a supported button-device signal through the appropriate 3.5mm plug. Check activation force, cable length, mounting stability and the manufacturer’s compatibility statement before purchase; the fact that a device is marketed as a foot pedal does not itself establish compatibility.

Final pre-purchase and setup checklist

  • The accessory is a button, trigger or stick device supported by the Access controller’s 3.5mm interface.
  • The plug contact arrangement matches the accessory maker’s specification.
  • The device does not require power from the expansion port.
  • The exact model is confirmed as compatible; a generic 3.5mm connector alone is not enough.
  • The PS5 and DualSense are already set up for first-time pairing.
  • The Access controller has been paired with the intended PS5.
  • The plug is fully seated in E1, E2, E3 or E4.
  • The input has been assigned in an Access controller profile.
  • The completed setup has been tested from the player’s real seating and mounting position.
