A PS5 can use up to four controllers at the same time. Pair the first controller with a USB cable, then pair controllers two, three, and four from Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories. For each additional controller, disconnect its USB cable, make sure its player indicator is off, hold Create + PS until the light bar blinks, and select it on the PS5. Finally, press the PS button on each controller to assign player numbers. The console’s four-controller capability does not mean every game supports four local players, so verify the game’s own local-multiplayer limit before starting.
What the PS5 supports
Sony Interactive Entertainment states that “You can use up to four controllers at the same time.” That is a console-level limit: four controllers can be paired and active simultaneously. A game may still allow only one, two, or another number of local players. The practical setup therefore has two separate checks:
- Console capacity: no more than four controllers connected at once.
- Game capacity: the specific title must advertise local multiplayer for the number of people you want to play.
Sony also states, “To use your controller, you need to pair it with your console.” Pairing is a one-time connection for each controller on that PS5 unless you later move the controller to another console or need to pair it again. DualSense is the simplest default for a current PS5 setup. DUALSHOCK 4 pairing is documented for PS5 use, but game and feature compatibility can vary by title.

Gather the equipment before inviting other players. Preparation prevents the most common interruptions during pairing.

- A PS5 that is turned on and displaying its home screen.
- One controller and a USB cable for the initial pairing.
- Up to three additional supported controllers. DualSense wireless controllers provide the most straightforward setup.
- For a wired fallback, a suitable USB-C cable for each DualSense you intend to run by cable.
- A game whose listing or in-game player information explicitly supports local multiplayer for the desired number of players.
Check battery condition before beginning. A controller with a low battery can be used in wired USB mode, so a cable is also useful when wireless pairing fails. Keep the first, already paired controller available: it is the controller you use to open the Bluetooth Accessories screen and approve the remaining pairings.
Pair the first controller by USB
The first controller establishes the initial connection between the PS5 and the controller. Follow this order rather than trying to pair all four from the Bluetooth menu at once.
- Turn on the PS5 and wait for the home screen.
- Connect the first DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on that controller.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and for the player indicator to light, showing that pairing has completed.
Once this controller responds to the PS button and can move around the PS5 interface, leave it connected or keep it nearby. It will control the menus while you add controllers two through four.

Pair controller two
Use the first controller to open the console’s Bluetooth device list, then put the second controller into pairing mode.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select General.
- Select Bluetooth Accessories.
- On controller two, disconnect its USB cable if one is attached.
- Confirm that controller two’s player indicator is off.
- Hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar begins blinking.
- Look at the Bluetooth Accessories list on the PS5. Select the controller when it appears.
The blinking light bar indicates that the second controller is advertising itself for pairing. Selecting it from the list completes the wireless connection. Do not press the PS button on controller two as the first pairing step; the documented multi-controller sequence uses Create + PS to place that controller into Bluetooth pairing mode.
Add controllers three and four
Repeat exactly the controller-two process for each remaining controller. The order matters because the PS5 needs one already paired controller to navigate the Bluetooth Accessories screen.

- For controller three, disconnect its USB cable and make sure its player indicator is off.
- Hold Create + PS on controller three until the light bar blinks.
- Select controller three in Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Repeat those same checks and actions for controller four.
After the fourth selection succeeds, all four controllers are connected to the PS5. If you are pairing fewer than four, stop after the number you need; the PS5’s limit is a maximum, not a requirement to connect four every time.

Pairing and player assignment are related but distinct. A controller can be connected without yet being assigned to the person holding it. Press the PS button on each connected controller, one at a time. The PS5 assigns a player number and the corresponding player indicator identifies that controller.
- Press PS on controller one and note its player indicator.
- Press PS on controller two and note the newly assigned player number.
- Do the same for controllers three and four.
- Have each person move a menu selection or perform the game’s join action with the controller showing their number.
Player indicators are useful when several identical DualSense controllers are in the room. If two people are unsure which controller they hold, press PS on one and use its indicator as the identifier before launching the game.

Choose wireless, wired, or a mixed setup
Every connected controller does not have to use the same connection method. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says DualSense can operate wirelessly or in wired USB mode. Choose the arrangement that matches your batteries, seating distance, and cable availability.

Wireless pairing is convenient, but USB is not merely a charging workaround: it is a supported operating mode. If a controller’s battery is low or Bluetooth pairing does not complete, connect it by USB and continue with the game rather than delaying the session.

Once every controller has a player number, launch the game with the first controller and open its multiplayer or local-play option. The exact menu wording belongs to the game, not the PS5 operating system. Look for wording such as local multiplayer, couch multiplayer, split-screen, versus, co-op, or a player-count statement in the game’s own description.

- Start the game from the PS5 home screen.
- Open the game’s local or offline multiplayer mode.
- Have each participant press the button the game uses to join, usually after the game displays a join prompt.
- Confirm that the game shows the intended player numbers before beginning a match or session.
If only two players appear even though four controllers show as connected in the PS5 interface, the game’s local-player limit or mode is the likely constraint. Try a different mode within that game only if its own instructions identify one that supports more players. Do not assume that a title allowing online multiplayer also allows four people on one console.

Work through the documented pairing conditions in order. Most failures occur because the controller is still connected by USB, its player indicator is on, or it was not placed back into Bluetooth pairing mode.

If the controller still does not appear after repeating Create + PS and reopening Bluetooth Accessories, keep it connected by USB and use wired mode. This bypasses the failed wireless step while preserving the same controller for local play.
How to decide which controller setup to use
The PS5 itself is rarely the deciding constraint once you have four supported controllers. Choose based on the game, the condition of the hardware, and where each person will sit.
- Choose four DualSense controllers when you want the least complicated current-PS5 arrangement and all four players need the broadest expected game compatibility.
- Choose wireless pairing when everyone can sit comfortably within the play area and the batteries have enough charge for the session.
- Choose USB for one or more players when a battery is low, a controller repeatedly fails Bluetooth pairing, or your seating places the console close to the players.
- Reuse a DUALSHOCK 4 only after checking the game. PS5 pairing is documented, but support for games and features can vary.
- Check the game’s local count before buying another controller. If the title supports only two local players, a third or fourth controller will not increase that game’s local capacity.
An additional DualSense wireless controller is the straightforward hardware addition for a four-person setup. A suitable USB-C data or charging cable is the practical secondary accessory when you need wired operation or a reliable fallback. Availability and merchant terms vary, so confirm them at the time of purchase.
Disconnecting for the next session
When the game ends, leave the controllers paired if you expect to use the same PS5 again. Pairing is required for a controller to work with the console, but you do not need to repeat the initial USB pairing sequence every time you start a local game. For a later session, wake the PS5 and press PS on the paired controllers; then verify their player indicators before opening the game. If you move a controller to another console, expect to pair it with that console before use, because Sony requires a controller to be paired with the console it operates.
