To connect a Bluetooth controller to Apple TV 4K, put the controller in pairing mode, hold the TV button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center, choose Game Controllers, and select the controller. You can also pair it from Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Once connected, Apple TV lets you create controller profiles, remap controls, assign settings to individual games, and combine two controllers with Buddy Controller.
What you need before pairing
You need an Apple TV 4K, a compatible Bluetooth game controller, and the controller maker’s instructions for entering discoverable or pairing mode. Apple’s setup guide does not use one universal button combination for every controller, so use the procedure specified for your exact model.
- Power on the controller and place it in Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Keep the controller close enough to Apple TV 4K for the pairing process.
- Temporarily reduce unnecessary Bluetooth connections if the controller does not appear or pairing repeatedly fails.
- Keep the Siri Remote available because its TV button opens the Control Center used for the quickest setup.
Controller names and menu wording can vary slightly by tvOS release, but the Apple TV paths are the same in Apple’s current documentation.

| Controller | Compatibility status | What the official documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Sony PlayStation DualShock 4 | Supported | Listed by Apple as a compatible game controller. |
| Sony PlayStation DualSense | Supported | Listed by Apple as a compatible game controller. |
| Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth | Supported | The Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller is listed; the wording does not cover every Xbox controller revision. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Supported | Listed by Apple as a compatible game controller. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controllers | Supported | Listed by Apple as a compatible game-controller option. |
| MFi-compatible game controllers | Supported | Apple supports controllers certified for the Made for iPhone/iPad program. |
Apple’s full supported-controller list is in its Apple TV controller guide. “Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth” is a specific compatibility description: if you have an older or otherwise different Xbox model, check that model’s specifications and pairing instructions rather than assuming it is included.
The documentation confirms compatibility and setup, but it does not publish a controller ranking. It does not establish which model has the lowest latency, longest battery life, best value, or compatibility with every individual Apple Arcade or tvOS game.
Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode
Apple TV can only list a controller that is advertising itself as available for pairing. Start by following the controller manufacturer’s instructions for discoverable mode. The exact process differs among DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox, Xbox Elite, Xbox Adaptive, and MFi controllers, so do not rely on a button sequence intended for another model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Turn on the controller.
- Use the manufacturer-specified pairing command until the controller indicates that it is discoverable.
- Leave the controller in that mode while you open Apple TV’s controller list.
If the controller never appears, return it to pairing mode and try again. A controller that is merely powered on but not advertising for a new connection may not be shown in Apple TV’s list.
Pair from Control Center: the fastest method
Apple provides a direct pairing route through Control Center. This method is useful when you are already watching a video or using an app and do not want to navigate through the full Settings menu.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode using its maker’s instructions.
- On the Siri Remote, press and hold the TV button to open Control Center.
- Select Game Controllers.
- Wait for Apple TV to scan for nearby controllers.
- Select your controller when its name appears.
- Complete any confirmation shown on screen and leave the controller connected while you test it in the game or app.
Apple documents this Control Center workflow in its Bluetooth-controller instructions. If the controller is not listed, keep it in pairing mode and use the troubleshooting sequence below instead of repeatedly selecting an unrelated device.
Pair or manage it from Settings
The Settings route exposes the same Bluetooth management controls and is useful when you need to forget an old pairing, inspect a connected controller, or change its profile.

- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select Remotes and Devices.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Put the controller in pairing mode.
- Select the controller from the available-device list.
After pairing, return to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth whenever you need to manage that controller. Apple also exposes the controller-management screen from Control Center > Game Controllers.
Identify the connected controller and customize its controls
Apple TV does more than remember a Bluetooth connection. You can identify a controller, create a custom profile, remap controls, and apply a profile to a particular game.
Identify a controller
Open Control Center > Game Controllers, or open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth, then select the connected controller. Apple provides a vibration pattern to help you identify which physical controller corresponds to the entry on screen. This is particularly useful when several similar controllers are paired.
Create a custom profile
From the selected controller’s management screen, add a custom profile. Use the profile to change the control mapping to suit the player or the game. The profile is associated with the controller settings you configure rather than requiring every game to use the default layout.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Remap controls
Choose the controller’s customization controls and assign the functions you want to different buttons or inputs. Remapping can help when a game’s default layout is uncomfortable or when a player needs a different physical arrangement. The available controls depend on what tvOS and the controller expose; Apple’s documentation does not promise that every game supports every possible remap.
Assign a profile to one game
To apply a configuration only to a particular title, use the profile’s Customized Apps area and assign the game there. Other games can continue using the controller’s general configuration. This lets one controller serve different players or games without manually changing the mapping every time.
Reset or delete a profile
Choose Reset to Defaults to remove your custom control changes while retaining the profile structure. Choose Delete This Profile when you want to remove the profile itself. If a game suddenly behaves differently after customization, check the profile assigned under Customized Apps before changing the game’s own settings.
Use two controllers as one player with Buddy Controller
Buddy Controller combines two compatible controllers so they operate as the controls for one player. This can help two people share control of a game or allow one player to use inputs from two devices.

- Pair both compatible controllers with Apple TV 4K.
- Open Control Center > Game Controllers, or manage the devices through Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Select the controller that should provide the primary player’s connection.
- Choose Buddy Controller.
- Select the second, or secondary, controller.
Only one controller can be primary at a time. Select the intended primary device carefully before enabling Buddy Controller, especially when multiple controllers have similar names. Apple documents this feature and its profile controls in the controller customization guide.
How many Bluetooth controllers can Apple TV 4K use?
Apple states that Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth game controllers at the same time. Apple also states that the limit changes to one controller when Apple TV is using a Bluetooth audio accessory. This is Apple’s simultaneous-connection limit, not a claim about how many controllers can be remembered for later use.
Buddy Controller uses two connected controllers as one player’s controls, but it does not change Apple’s published connection limit. If a Bluetooth headset or speaker is connected, account for the one-controller limit before attempting to pair a second gamepad.
Disconnect a controller without removing its pairing
Disconnecting is useful when you want to stop using the controller temporarily but keep it available for a later session.
- Open Control Center > Game Controllers, or go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Select the controller.
- Choose Disconnect Device.
Disconnect Device ends the current connection without deleting the stored pairing. The controller can be connected again later through the same Bluetooth controls.
Forget a controller completely
Use forgetting when you want Apple TV to remove the pairing rather than merely stop using the controller.
- Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth, or open the controller entry from Control Center.
- Select the controller you want to remove.
- Choose Forget This Device.
- Confirm the removal if Apple TV asks.
After forgetting, Apple TV no longer treats that controller as a remembered paired device. To use it again, put it back into pairing mode and follow the Control Center or Settings procedure.
Troubleshoot pairing and connection problems
The controller does not appear in the list
- Confirm that the controller is in its actual Bluetooth pairing or discoverable mode, not simply switched on.
- Follow the controller maker’s instructions again; a model-specific pairing command may be required.
- Keep the controller near Apple TV while the device list is open.
- Reduce the number of other connected Bluetooth devices and retry, because Apple recommends reducing possible Bluetooth interference when pairing fails.
Apple TV sees the controller but will not pair
- Exit the device list and return the controller to pairing mode.
- Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Select the controller if it appears and choose Forget This Device.
- Put the controller into pairing mode again.
- Select it as a new device.
For a controller that was previously paired but has become unreliable, forgetting it and pairing it again removes the stored pairing entry that Apple’s troubleshooting guidance identifies as a recovery step.

Open the connected-controller entry and use Apple’s identification option. The controller provides a vibration pattern, allowing you to match the on-screen name to the physical device before assigning a profile or enabling Buddy Controller.
A controller works in one game but not another
Check whether a game-specific profile is assigned under Customized Apps. A custom mapping may be applied to one title while another uses the default layout. Reset the profile to defaults if necessary, or delete the profile and pair the controller again only after confirming that the problem is not a per-game assignment.
A second controller will not connect
First check Apple’s simultaneous-connection conditions. Apple TV 4K supports up to four Bluetooth game controllers, but only one controller when a Bluetooth audio accessory is in use. Disconnect the audio accessory or stop trying to exceed the applicable limit, then pair the second controller again.

For a straightforward purchase, start with a model explicitly named by Apple, then verify the exact Bluetooth version and regional availability. Do not treat Apple’s compatibility list as a value, battery, latency, or game-by-game performance ranking.
A reliable setup checklist
- Confirm that the controller is one of Apple’s listed compatible models or an MFi-compatible controller.
- Read the controller maker’s instructions for pairing mode.
- Hold the Siri Remote’s TV button and open Control Center > Game Controllers.
- Select the controller, or use Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth if you prefer the full settings path.
- Identify the physical controller with Apple’s vibration pattern when more than one is connected.
- Create a custom profile only if the default controls are unsuitable.
- Use Customized Apps when a remap should apply to one game rather than every game.
- Use Buddy Controller when two controllers should operate as one player.
- Choose Disconnect Device for a temporary disconnect and Forget This Device when you want to remove the pairing.
- If pairing fails, return the controller to pairing mode, reduce other Bluetooth connections, forget the old entry, and pair it again.
What Apple’s documentation does not establish
The official Apple material establishes supported controller families, pairing paths, customization features, Buddy Controller, disconnect and forget controls, and the simultaneous-controller limit. It does not establish independent latency tests, battery-life figures, controller value rankings, current prices, retailer stock, or compatibility with every individual tvOS game. Those details can change by model, region, software version, and game, so they require separate current verification.
For the most dependable result, use the exact controller model named by Apple, follow that model’s pairing instructions, and manage it through the Apple TV Bluetooth screens. This avoids confusing a controller that is merely powered on with one that is actually discoverable and keeps profile, multi-controller, and troubleshooting controls in the places Apple documents.
