The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through Xbox Wireless or the included 9-foot USB-C cable. On a Windows 10 or 11 PC, you can use Bluetooth, USB-C, or the separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Android and iPhone use Bluetooth, provided the phone and operating-system version are supported. Put the controller into pairing mode with its Pair button, select Xbox Elite Wireless Controller on the destination device, and wait for the Xbox logo to stop flashing.

Connection options at a glance

Your best method depends on the device, whether you need a cable, and whether you want to configure profiles or button mapping.

Destination Wireless method Wired method Xbox Accessories app Important qualification
Xbox Series X|S Xbox Wireless Included 9-foot USB-C cable Available on the console Supported by the Elite Series 2
Xbox One Xbox Wireless Included 9-foot USB-C cable Available on the console Supported by the Elite Series 2
Windows 10/11 PC Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows USB-C data cable Available on Windows 10/11 Bluetooth requires compatible PC hardware
Windows 7/8.1 PC Not documented as a Bluetooth method for this controller USB-C cable Not the documented app platform Some functionality is unsupported
Android Bluetooth USB-C may work only where the device and game support wired controllers Not the documented mobile platform Xbox specifies selected devices and versions
iPhone Bluetooth Not the normal documented connection method Not the documented mobile platform Xbox specifies selected devices and versions

The controller can switch between Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth device classes, but it does not always return automatically to the device you want. If it connects somewhere else, pair it with the intended device again.

Prepare the controller before pairing

  • Charge the internal battery or connect the controller with the included USB-C cable. Xbox rates the battery for up to 40 hours per charge; actual runtime varies with use and other factors.
  • Keep the controller close to the console, computer, or phone during the initial pairing.
  • Turn off or move away from other devices that may automatically reconnect to the controller.
  • For a wired setup, use a USB-C cable that carries data. A charge-only cable can power the controller without creating a usable controller connection.
  • On a phone or PC, confirm that the operating system and the game support Xbox Bluetooth controllers. Xbox describes Android, iOS, and Bluetooth support as limited to selected devices and versions.

The small Pair button is used for wireless discovery. When the Xbox logo flashes, the controller is waiting for a device. A steady logo indicates that a connection has been established.

Connect to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

Wireless Xbox pairing

  1. Turn on the Xbox console and the Elite Series 2 controller.
  2. Press the Pair button on the console.
  3. Within the pairing interval, press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
  4. Wait for the logo to become steady. The console and controller are now linked.
  5. Open a game and move a stick or press a button to verify input.

This uses Xbox Wireless rather than Bluetooth. The same process applies to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles.

USB-C pairing when wireless setup fails

  1. Connect the controller to the console with the included 9-foot USB-C cable.
  2. Turn on the controller if it does not wake automatically.
  3. Wait for the console to recognize it, then test input in a game or the console interface.

USB-C is also useful when the controller is not discoverable, the console’s Pair button is difficult to reach, or you need a dependable connection while troubleshooting.

Connect to a Windows 10 or 11 PC

Bluetooth method

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Turn on the controller.
  3. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. In Windows, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and choose Xbox Elite Wireless Controller when it appears.
  5. Wait until the logo is steady, then test the controller in a game. You can also check it in Windows’ game-controller panel.

If the controller does not appear, leave the pairing screen open and repeat the Pair-button step so the logo is flashing. A controller that is already connected to another device may need that existing connection removed or disconnected first.

USB-C method

  1. Connect the controller to the PC with a USB-C data cable. The included cable is the documented option.
  2. Turn on the controller and allow Windows to install or use its controller driver.
  3. Launch a game and test the sticks, buttons, and triggers.
  4. Open the Xbox Accessories app if you need profiles, remapping, or other supported controller setup.

USB-C avoids Bluetooth discovery and is the required documented connection method for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Those older Windows versions have some unsupported functionality, so do not expect every current configuration feature to be available.

Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows

The Xbox Wireless Adapter is a separately sold Windows option. It is useful when the PC has no Bluetooth or when you want an Xbox Wireless connection instead of Bluetooth.

  1. Plug the adapter into a USB port on the PC.
  2. Install any Windows software that the adapter requests.
  3. Press the Pair button on the adapter.
  4. Hold the controller’s Pair button until its Xbox logo flashes.
  5. Wait for both devices to link, then test the controller in a game.

The adapter is not required for every PC. A Windows 10 or 11 computer with compatible Bluetooth can pair directly, and USB-C works without either wireless option.

Connect to Android

  1. Open Settings > Connected devices or the phone’s Bluetooth menu, then enable Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on the Elite Series 2 controller.
  3. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. Tap Xbox Elite Wireless Controller in the list of available devices.
  5. Accept the pairing request and wait for the logo to become steady.
  6. Open a game that supports controllers and verify the controls.

Xbox confirms Bluetooth connectivity for Android, but qualifies it as support for selected devices and versions. A phone can pair successfully and still lack support in a particular game, so test the title you intend to play rather than relying only on the Bluetooth menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect to an iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Turn on the controller.
  3. Press and hold the Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. Under Other Devices, tap Xbox Elite Wireless Controller.
  5. Wait until the Xbox logo is steady.
  6. Launch a controller-compatible game and test movement and buttons.

iPhone support is also subject to selected devices and iOS versions. If the controller is missing from the list, first confirm that it is flashing, then remove any old controller entry and try discovery again.

  • This listing does not include: Carrying Case, Charging Dock, Paddles, Additional Thumbsticks, or Dpad.
  • Custom Controls: Map buttons to your preference, create and store up to 3 custom profiles, and switch between them seamlessly during gameplay
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Seamlessly connect and play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC with USB-C connectivity and Bluetooth wireless technology

Choose Bluetooth, USB-C, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter

Method Advantages Limitations Best use
Bluetooth No cable; built into many Windows PCs and phones Requires compatible Bluetooth hardware and supported device or operating-system versions; game support can vary Phone play and cable-free PC use
USB-C Broadly dependable, avoids discovery problems, and supports wired play Requires a data-capable cable and keeps the controller physically connected Initial setup, troubleshooting, older Windows PCs, or low-latency wired play
Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows Xbox Wireless connection on a compatible Windows PC without relying on built-in Bluetooth Requires a separately purchased adapter and a free USB port Windows desktops or laptops without suitable Bluetooth

Use USB-C first when you need to isolate a pairing problem. Once the controller works by cable, you can troubleshoot Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless independently.

Use the Xbox Accessories app for profiles and remapping

The Xbox Accessories app is documented for Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11. It is the place to configure supported profiles and button mapping for the Elite Series 2.

On an Xbox console

  1. Connect the controller to the console wirelessly or by USB-C.
  2. Open the Xbox Accessories app from the console’s apps list.
  3. Select the Elite Series 2 controller.
  4. Choose the profile or mapping controls shown by the app, make your changes, and save them to the controller.

On Windows 10 or 11

  1. Connect the controller by Bluetooth, USB-C, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  2. Open the Xbox Accessories app in Windows.
  3. Select the connected controller.
  4. Create or edit a profile and map buttons as needed, then save the configuration.

The documented app availability does not include Android or iPhone. If you need to change profiles or mappings, connect the controller to an Xbox console or a Windows 10/11 PC instead of looking for the console app on a phone.

Switch between Xbox, PC, and mobile devices

The Elite Series 2 is designed to pair with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through Xbox Wireless and with Windows PCs and mobile devices through Bluetooth. Switching is therefore between different wireless device classes, not just between entries in one Bluetooth list.

  • Stay in the game for longer with upto 40 hours of rechargeable battery life. Use Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or the included USB C cable to play across your Xbox One and Windows 10 devices
  • Compatible with Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Windows 10
  1. Turn on the device you want to use.
  2. If the controller connects to a different device, disconnect that device or remove its active controller connection.
  3. Put the controller into the pairing mode required by the destination: the console’s Pair button for Xbox Wireless, or the controller’s flashing Pair button for Bluetooth.
  4. Select the controller on the destination device and wait for a steady logo.
  5. Test input before starting a game.

If automatic return does not happen, repeat the pairing procedure for the desired device. Re-pairing is safer than repeatedly pressing buttons without confirming which device currently owns the connection.

Troubleshoot pairing and connection failures

The controller appears but will not connect

  1. Open the destination device’s Bluetooth list.
  2. Remove or forget the old Xbox Elite Wireless Controller entry.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or restart the console or PC’s wireless service.
  4. Turn the controller off and on.
  5. Hold the Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes, then start a fresh pairing attempt.

An old saved entry can represent a stale pairing record. Deleting it forces the device to negotiate a new connection.

Bluetooth is missing on the PC

Use the included USB-C data cable, or connect an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Windows 10/11 does not require the adapter when the computer already has compatible Bluetooth, but a PC without Bluetooth needs one of these alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller connects but a game does nothing

  • Confirm that the game supports controllers on that platform.
  • Close and reopen the game after the controller connects; some games detect a controller only at startup.
  • Test the controller in another compatible game or in Windows’ game-controller panel.
  • On a phone, check the exact device and operating-system version because Xbox limits Bluetooth support to selected combinations.

A wired connection only charges

  1. Disconnect the cable and try a known USB-C data cable.
  2. Reconnect with the controller powered on.
  3. Try another USB port on the console or PC.
  4. Wait for the operating system or console to recognize the controller before launching the game.

A charge-only cable cannot carry controller data, even though it may illuminate or charge the controller.

  • PLAY LIKE A PRO — The XBOX Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 features over 30 ways to play like a pro. Designed in collaboration with pro-level players, it puts exceptional performance, customization, and durability where it matters most.
  • ADJUSTABLE-TENSION THUMBSTICKS — Fine-tune your aim with thumbsticks that let you adjust resistance for improved accuracy, consistency, and control in every match.

  • SAVE AND SWITCH PROFILES — Save up to 3 custom profiles on the controller and switch between them on the fly with the dedicated Profile button. Even pick which color the XBOX button lights up as.

The Xbox Accessories app cannot find the controller

  • On Windows, confirm that the controller is connected by Bluetooth, USB-C, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter before opening the app.
  • On Xbox, connect the controller to the console and reopen the app.
  • On Android or iPhone, do not expect the documented console and Windows app features; use an Xbox console or Windows 10/11 PC for profiles and remapping.

The controller will not pair with a phone

  1. Check that the phone’s Bluetooth switch is on.
  2. Forget any previous controller entry.
  3. Make sure the Xbox logo is flashing before searching.
  4. Keep the phone and controller close together during pairing.
  5. Verify that the phone model, operating-system version, and game are among the supported combinations.

Phone compatibility is not universal. Xbox’s own qualification—Android, iOS, and Bluetooth on selected devices and versions—means that an unsupported phone may not pair or may pair without usable game input.

Power and cable considerations

The controller contains an internal rechargeable battery rated by Xbox for up to 40 hours per charge. That is a maximum rating rather than a guaranteed session length; use patterns and other factors change actual battery life. A USB-C connection can provide a wired controller link while also charging the battery.

Keep the included 9-foot cable available even if you normally play wirelessly. It provides a fallback for console pairing, Windows setup, Windows 7/8.1, app configuration, and diagnosing whether a wireless problem is actually a controller or device problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility boundaries to remember

  • Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One support the Elite Series 2 through Xbox Wireless and USB-C.
  • Windows 10 and 11 support Bluetooth, USB-C, and the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
  • Windows 7 and 8.1 require USB-C for the documented connection and have some unsupported functionality.
  • Android and iPhone Bluetooth support depends on selected devices and versions, and individual games must also support controllers.
  • Profiles and button mapping through Xbox Accessories are documented on Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11, not as a phone feature.

For the most reliable setup, establish a wired connection first, confirm that the destination recognizes the controller, and then add the wireless method that suits your device.
