An original PlayStation cannot send HDMI directly. Its AV Multi connector outputs analog video—composite, S-Video, or RGB—so an HDMI-only television requires an active converter or scaler. If your television still has a yellow composite-video input and red/white audio inputs, the original AV cable can connect directly; otherwise, use the input type your TV supports or buy a PS1/PS2-to-HDMI adapter.
Start by inspecting the TV, not by buying a cable. Port availability differs by model and region, and a cable alone cannot turn an analog signal into HDMI.
Identify the signal your PlayStation and TV can use
The original PlayStation sends analog audio and video through its AV Multi connector. That connector can carry composite video, S-Video, or RGB. HDMI is a digital audio/video connection, so an HDMI-only television cannot decode the PlayStation’s signal without powered conversion hardware.

Some early PlayStation models also include separate RCA composite outputs. On those consoles, the yellow plug carries video; red and white carry right- and left-channel audio. Later models generally rely on the AV Multi socket for the same kinds of signals.
#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
Look at the television’s rear and side panels for one of these arrangements:
- Composite: a yellow video jack and red/white audio jacks, or a manufacturer-supplied adapter that exposes those jacks through a small multi-purpose socket.
- S-Video: a round S-Video input, plus separate audio inputs.
- RGB-capable SCART: a SCART socket explicitly accepting RGB. A SCART connector that accepts only composite will not provide the RGB signal.
- HDMI only: no usable analog video input. You need a PS1/PS2-to-HDMI adapter or a separate analog-to-HDMI scaler.
Do not assume that a socket’s shape proves compatibility. Check the labels in the television manual or on the set itself, especially for SCART and combination AV inputs.
Choose the connection method
| Method | TV input required | Console-side cable or hardware | Signal path | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Composite | Yellow video plus red/white audio, or a compatible AV adapter jack | PlayStation AV cable | Analog composite video and analog stereo audio directly into the TV | Correct color-coded jacks and the TV’s matching AV input |
| S-Video | S-Video plus separate audio inputs | Compatible PlayStation S-Video cable | Analog video with brightness and color carried on separate conductors | That the TV accepts S-Video and that the audio leads reach the correct inputs |
| RGB SCART | SCART socket that accepts RGB | Properly wired PlayStation RGB SCART cable | Analog RGB video through SCART | RGB support on that exact SCART socket; composite-only SCART is insufficient |
| HDMI conversion | Open HDMI input | PS1/PS2-to-HDMI adapter or separate analog-to-HDMI scaler | PlayStation analog output converted to HDMI | Explicit PS1 support, console connector, HDMI audio behavior, and any USB-power requirement |
For an HDMI-only set, a dedicated PS1/PS2 HDMI adapter is usually the most straightforward purchase. If composite is available, a PlayStation AV cable is the simplest direct route and avoids an extra conversion box. S-Video or RGB are alternatives only when the television actually accepts those signals.

Connect through composite video
Use this method when the television has a yellow video input and red/white audio inputs, including a labeled composite adapter supplied with the TV.
- Turn off the PlayStation and the television.
- Insert the PlayStation AV cable’s console plug into the AV Multi connector. If your early console has built-in RCA outputs, use those instead of an AV Multi cable.
- Connect the yellow plug to the television’s VIDEO IN or composite-video jack.
- Connect the red plug to AUDIO R (right channel) and the white plug to AUDIO L (left channel).
- Reconnect the television’s adapter lead if its composite jacks are exposed through a proprietary or combination input. Do not place the yellow plug in a green component-video jack unless the TV documentation explicitly identifies that jack as shared composite.
- Turn on the television, select the AV or composite source that corresponds to those jacks, and then turn on the PlayStation.
If the TV has several AV inputs, the on-screen source name may be AV1, AV2, Composite, or a similar label. Select the input physically connected to the cable; selecting an empty HDMI source will produce no PlayStation picture.
What this connection does and does not require
- No HDMI converter is needed when the TV genuinely accepts composite video.
- The red and white leads are audio; they do not carry video. The yellow lead is video only.
- If the set exposes composite through a small adapter cable, that adapter is part of the TV’s input system and must be connected before selecting the source.
Use S-Video when the television supports it
S-Video remains analog, but it keeps brightness and color on separate conductors rather than combining them into one composite signal. This requires both a compatible PlayStation S-Video cable and an S-Video input on the TV.

- Power off both devices.
- Plug the cable into the PlayStation AV Multi connector.
- Insert the S-Video plug into the TV’s S-Video input.
- Connect the cable’s separate red and white audio leads to the TV’s right and left audio inputs associated with S-Video. Some televisions place those audio jacks beside the S-Video socket; others assign them through a labeled input group.
- Select S-Video on the television, then start the PlayStation.
An S-Video cable cannot be connected to a composite-only jack by using the plug shape as a guide. Confirm the input label and the television’s manual before purchasing.
Use RGB SCART on compatible European televisions
The PlayStation AV Multi output can provide RGB. A properly wired RGB SCART cable can carry that signal to a television whose SCART socket accepts RGB.
- Check the TV’s documentation or input label for RGB support on the specific SCART socket. If the socket is composite-only, an RGB cable will not create an RGB path.
- With both devices off, connect the PlayStation end of the RGB SCART cable to AV Multi.
- Connect the SCART plug fully to the RGB-capable TV socket.
- Select the corresponding SCART/AV source and power on the PlayStation.
SCART sockets are not interchangeable in capability: the same physical connector can be wired for composite only or for RGB. Buy an RGB SCART cable only after confirming that the television accepts RGB on that port.

Connect an HDMI-only television
When the TV has no usable composite, S-Video, or RGB input, use active conversion hardware. A PS1/PS2-to-HDMI adapter is designed to accept the PlayStation’s analog output and present an HDMI signal to the television. A separate retro-console analog-to-HDMI scaler can perform the same basic conversion when you want one device for several legacy consoles.
- Check the adapter listing for explicit PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 support. A generic cable described only as “RCA to HDMI” may not include the required conversion electronics.
- Confirm the console-side connector. The original PlayStation normally uses AV Multi; an adapter intended for a different connector will not fit.
- Connect the adapter to the PlayStation’s AV Multi output.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter’s HDMI output to an open HDMI input on the TV.
- If the adapter has a USB power lead, connect it to the required power source before testing. Whether USB power is required is product-specific, so follow the supplied manual.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the adapter.
- Start the PlayStation and wait for the console’s startup or game image.
Some adapters carry audio through HDMI; others expose separate audio connections. Verify this before buying so the audio path matches your television and setup. A product manual such as the KAICO manual documents a device made specifically for PlayStation 1 and 2; use the instructions for the exact adapter you purchase.

A dedicated PS1/PS2 adapter is generally the least complicated option for one PlayStation and one HDMI TV: it combines the console connection and conversion in a single accessory. A separate analog-to-HDMI scaler adds another box and cable but may suit a setup that also includes other analog consoles. In either case, compatibility depends on the adapter’s design and the television’s HDMI input behavior; do not assume every model handles every console signal identically.

What to check before buying
Search using the TV port you actually have: “PS1 to HDMI adapter” for an HDMI-only television, “PlayStation 1 AV cable” or “PS1 RCA cable” for composite, “PS1 RGB SCART cable” for RGB SCART, or “retro console analog to HDMI scaler” for a separate conversion box.
- Console connector: confirm AV Multi support, or RCA support if your early model has built-in composite outputs.
- TV input: match composite, S-Video, RGB SCART, or HDMI exactly. Do not buy based solely on a similar-looking socket.
- Audio routing: check whether audio travels over HDMI or requires separate red/white leads.
- Power: check whether the converter needs USB power and what power connection the instructions specify.
- Signal claims: look for explicit PS1/PS2 compatibility rather than a vague “retro” or “AV” description.
- Return and regional compatibility: TV connector layouts and supported analog standards vary by model and region. Confirm the seller’s compatibility information for your television.
Pricing, stock, and compatibility change frequently, so verify those details at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing or a product photograph.
Troubleshoot a blank or incorrect picture
No picture and no sound
- Confirm that the PlayStation is powered on and that the TV source matches the physical input in use.
- For composite, verify yellow-to-video, red-to-right-audio, and white-to-left-audio connections.
- For S-Video or RGB SCART, confirm that the TV input supports that signal type; a composite-only socket will not accept RGB.
- For HDMI conversion, check every link: PlayStation to adapter, adapter power if required, adapter to HDMI cable, and the TV’s selected HDMI input.
Sound but no picture
On a direct composite connection, recheck the yellow plug and the TV’s video jack. On an adapter setup, verify that the converter is intended for PS1/PS2 and that its console-side connector is fully seated. An audio-only result often means the video plug is in the wrong jack or the TV is on a different source.

For composite and S-Video, check that red and white are connected to the audio inputs paired with the selected video input. For HDMI adapters, consult the adapter’s documentation to determine whether audio is embedded in HDMI or requires separate leads.
Black-and-white or unstable-looking output
Recheck that the TV is set to the same input type as the cable. A mismatch—such as selecting composite while using S-Video, or using an RGB cable on a composite-only SCART socket—can prevent the intended color signal from being displayed. If the TV continues to reject the signal, consult the television and adapter manuals for model- and region-specific support.
Practical setup order
For the fastest installation, follow this order:
- Write down every input label available on the TV before shopping.
- Choose the highest-capability input the TV actually supports: RGB SCART or S-Video when available, composite when that is the only analog option, and active HDMI conversion when no analog input exists.
- Buy a cable or converter that explicitly names PlayStation 1 support and matches the console connector.
- Connect audio and video while both devices are off.
- Select the correct TV source before powering the PlayStation.
- If the image is missing, test the input selection and cable routing first, then check converter power and the adapter’s PS1 compatibility.
The key distinction is simple: a passive cable can route an analog signal only to a TV input that already understands that signal. An HDMI-only television needs powered analog-to-digital conversion.
