To connect an MCP server to a mobile Android app, make the app an MCP client: connect to a server endpoint the device can reach, complete initialization, discover and call tools, then map validated results into the app’s own UI state. For native Android widgets, your app controls the rendering. MCP Apps is a different option: it provides HTML UI resources that a capable host renders in a sandboxed iframe; the reviewed documentation does not establish a standard native Android renderer for those views.
Choose what you mean by “Android app”
There are three distinct scenarios that are easy to conflate:
- A mobile app consuming an MCP server: the app acts as an MCP client, calls server tools, and displays results in its own interface.
- An MCP Apps-capable host: the host retrieves a tool-linked
ui://HTML resource and renders it in a sandboxed iframe, bridging data and interactions between the tool and the view. - Gemini in Android Studio: this is an IDE-side MCP host configuration, not a setting for an app installed on a phone.
The rest of this guide focuses on a mobile app as the client, then explains how MCP Apps and Android Studio differ.
Connect a mobile app as an MCP client
The official MCP Kotlin SDK includes a client module and documents Streamable HTTP, SSE, and WebSocket transport approaches. Its quickstart demonstrates Streamable HTTP. Resolve current SDK and Ktor versions from the official repositories when implementing; the SDK documentation notes that Ktor engine dependencies are not added transitively, so choose and include the engine appropriate to your application.

- Add the client dependencies. Use the
io.modelcontextprotocol:kotlin-sdk-clientmodule for client-only use, along with the required Ktor client engine dependency. Confirm current versions in the official repositories rather than copying an old guide’s version number. - Provide a reachable endpoint and transport. The quickstart uses an example Streamable HTTP URL such as
http://localhost:3000/mcp. That address is only useful when the server is actually reachable from the runtime where the app is running. For an emulator or physical device, configure an address and network route the device can access. - Connect and initialize. Construct an SDK
Client, create aStreamableHttpClientTransportusing an HTTP client and server URL, then callclient.connect(transport). The SDK performs the MCP initialization handshake as part of connecting. Inspect the negotiated server capabilities and version before relying on optional features. - Discover tools. After connection, call
client.listTools()and use the returned tool definitions to determine which tools are available and what inputs they accept. - Call a tool and handle outcomes. Use the client API’s
callTooloperation with the chosen tool and arguments. Handle protocol errors, network and transport failures, and cases where a server or host does not support a feature your app expects. - Map the result to UI state. Validate the returned fields, convert them into state owned by the app, and render that state with the UI toolkit already in use. The client documentation demonstrates connection and tool discovery; it does not prescribe a Compose-specific binding.
The Kotlin SDK quickstart also shows a server exposing Streamable HTTP on /mcp. During local development, the repository suggests using MCP Inspector to inspect available tools and logs. Configure any authentication required by the server, and test the endpoint from the actual emulator or device rather than assuming that a successful desktop connection proves the mobile route works.
Render tool results in native Android UI
For a conventional Android experience, treat MCP as a source of data and actions, not as a mechanism for the server to draw Android views. Your app decides which result fields are suitable to show, how to represent loading and error states, and what user actions invoke additional tools. Keep that mapping explicit: validate tool output before presenting it or using it to trigger app actions, and avoid treating server-provided content as trusted UI instructions.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
This architecture keeps the interface native and under the app’s control. It also means the server’s response does not automatically become a Compose screen: the reviewed SDK and MCP Apps documentation do not establish an automatic MCP Apps-to-Compose conversion or a drop-in official Android MCP Apps host.
Use MCP Apps when the server supplies an HTML view
MCP Apps is a host-mediated HTML UI mechanism, rather than native Android rendering. A tool’s metadata can link to an HTML template using the ui:// URI scheme. A capable host fetches that resource and renders it in a sandboxed iframe. Tool results can carry ordinary content for model context and structuredContent intended for UI display.

An Android application that wants to display such a view must itself implement the relevant host and web-view capabilities. At a high level, it needs to discover the UI metadata, fetch the linked resource, render and initialize the view, deliver tool inputs and results, support permitted tool calls, and handle teardown. The MCP Apps overview describes this host/view lifecycle; it does not provide a standard native Android renderer in the reviewed documentation.
| Decision | Native Android client UI | MCP Apps host/view |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering format | Native app components driven by app-owned state | Server-provided HTML UI resource |
| Connection role | Android app connects as an MCP client | Host connects to the MCP server and bridges it to the view |
| UI linkage | App chooses which result fields to display | Tool metadata references a ui:// resource |
| Rendering environment | App’s normal Android UI environment | Host-rendered sandboxed iframe |
| Main implementation work | Transport, tool lifecycle, and result-to-UI mapping | Resource retrieval, iframe bridge, initialization, result delivery, interaction, and teardown |
| Documented limitation | Kotlin SDK documents clients and transports; no Compose recipe is established | MCP Apps documentation describes HTML and iframe behavior; no native Android host recipe is established |
Configure Gemini in Android Studio separately
If by “Android app” you meant Android Studio, its Gemini agent has a separate MCP server configuration. The Android Developers guide to MCP servers in Android Studio says to enable MCP Servers in settings and configure the server in mcp.json. For Streamable HTTP, use httpUrl; an SSE endpoint generally uses an /sse URL and the url field. Custom HTTP headers are supported. Authentication failures may require signing in through the server’s authentication flow.

Those settings apply to Android Studio’s Gemini integration, not to a mobile app’s own MCP client. The same guide lists Android Studio limitations: it does not support stdio transport, MCP resources, or prompt templates. Check the capabilities of the particular host or client you are building against instead of assuming every MCP feature is available everywhere.

Avoid the common connection and rendering mistakes
- Using a server-hosting library for a client task: the Android MCP SDK repository describes running an MCP server from an Android app and explicitly limits that SDK to debug builds. Hosting a server on Android is the reverse of having an Android app consume a remote server.
- Leaving a desktop localhost URL in device configuration:
localhostin the quickstart is an example endpoint, not a universally reachable server address. From a phone or emulator, it refers to that runtime’s own environment; provide a route to the server that works from the device. - Expecting MCP Apps to produce native widgets: the documented view is HTML rendered by a capable host in a sandboxed iframe. Native Android rendering remains the app’s responsibility unless the app implements an appropriate web-based host.
- Assuming a successful connection means every capability is supported: inspect server capabilities and verify the chosen client’s feature support, especially when using optional host features.
