To connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy that event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and enter both in your FFmpeg setup. Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives a preview. For a scheduled broadcast, you must then click Go live in Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides; do not guess an endpoint.
This guide covers the YouTube-side setup and checks. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a verified FFmpeg command, automatic reconnection behavior, or an indefinitely reliable single session, so it does not prescribe command-line flags for those tasks.
How do I connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live?
You need an event in YouTube Studio, that event’s stream URL and key, and an FFmpeg configuration that sends compatible audio and video to YouTube. The stream URL identifies the ingestion server; the stream key authenticates your encoder. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live for an immediate setup. For a scheduled broadcast, open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse settings. Check the event’s title, privacy, and other metadata before starting. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy this event’s connection details. In the event’s Stream settings in Live Control Room, copy the displayed Stream URL and stream key. Enter both in your FFmpeg configuration. A reusable key may simplify repeat setup, but confirm that the selected key belongs to the intended channel and event workflow.
- Prefer the provided RTMPS address. YouTube recommends RTMPS. In the Stream URL field, select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy that actual address into your encoder configuration. Do not construct a URL or append a path from memory. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Set compatible encoding and bitrate. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to suit both the content and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s recommended bitrates differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use its encoder settings and bitrate table for the combination you intend to send.
- Start FFmpeg and check the preview. Start your configured encoder and watch Live Control Room for an incoming stream and preview. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live after the preview appears. Monitor stream health and check that picture and sound are actually present.
The steps above describe YouTube’s generic encoder workflow. They are not a tested FFmpeg command recipe: the official YouTube pages cited here do not specify FFmpeg flags, service supervision, or how a particular FFmpeg build should reconnect after an interruption.

Where do I find my YouTube stream key?
Find the key in the Stream settings for the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the key for the event or reusable key you intend to use, and pair it with the URL shown for that setup. Do not post the key, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a publicly accessible configuration. YouTube documents key management, permissions, and reset steps in Manage live stream settings.
- If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and replace the old value in your encoder configuration.
- Only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key.
- If a third-party encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new stream key and updating the encoder with it.
What settings should I check before starting?
There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Select a target based on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload speed available continuously—not just a brief speed-test result. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with CBR. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio can use AAC or MP3. Consult the platform’s current encoder recommendations for the specific resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose.

- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where your encoder permits it; do not exceed four seconds.
- Upload capacity: Allow enough sustained upload bandwidth for the selected video bitrate and audio, with headroom for normal network variation.
- End-to-end check: Confirm the preview, stream-health indicators, audio, and video before making a scheduled stream public.
YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend preparation and ongoing checks of audio and video quality.
Why is my YouTube stream preview not showing?
A missing preview means Live Control Room has not yet confirmed usable incoming audio and video. Check the connection and output in this order:

- Re-copy the URL and key. Confirm that both came from the intended stream settings and that the key was not reset since you configured FFmpeg.
- Verify the protocol address. If you intended to use RTMPS, confirm the supplied URL begins with
rtmps, notrtmp. Use the exact URL revealed by YouTube rather than adding a guessed endpoint or path. - Check encoder output and network capacity. Confirm FFmpeg is sending audio and video, and that the chosen bitrate is suitable for the available upload connection and YouTube’s settings for the selected format.
- Review Live Control Room health indicators. Wait for the incoming stream and preview, then check the picture and sound. For a scheduled broadcast, do not click Go live until the preview appears.
- For RTMPS SSL or timeout errors, recheck that you copied the secure address. YouTube’s RTMPS help page suggests port 443 if an encoder’s URL handling requires an explicit port. Do not invent or append a URL path.
- If a third-party encoder will not start, YouTube recommends creating a new stream key and updating the encoder configuration.
These checks can identify common setup problems, but they do not establish that a continuous FFmpeg process will reconnect automatically after every network or YouTube interruption.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise an automatic archive for one continuous 24/7 stream. If you need a recording, arrange a separate local or remote recording workflow and verify it independently rather than relying on YouTube’s under-12-hour statement. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

What to plan for a genuinely continuous stream
A 24/7 stream is not just an encoder configuration: the process, network, power, and content all need attention. YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee an uninterrupted session of indefinite duration or specify FFmpeg’s recovery behavior. Plan how you will notice an interruption, restart or recover the encoder, and preserve any recording you need. Test the full workflow—including scheduled-event activation and any separate recording—before relying on it.
Also review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright rules for the material you broadcast. Owning or having access to a video file does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to stream it. A continuous schedule does not remove the need to use content you are authorized to broadcast.
