Yes—the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) can use an external GPU. ASUS’s officially documented connection is the 2025 ROG XG Mobile through the handheld’s USB4 Type-C port, which ASUS describes as Thunderbolt 4 compliant. The Ally X must run BIOS 306 or later for the listed XG Mobile compatibility. Connect the XG Mobile to AC power, let Windows and ASUS software detect it, and connect your gaming monitor directly to the external GPU whenever possible.
USB4 makes some third-party USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 enclosures technically plausible, but ASUS does not certify every enclosure. Thunderbolt 5 compatibility is model-specific, and the Ally X has no published native OCuLink port.

Identify the correct USB-C port
The Ally X has two physically similar Type-C connectors with different capabilities:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- USB4 Type-C: This is the documented eGPU connection. ASUS lists Thunderbolt 4 compliance, DisplayPort 1.4 with FreeSync support and USB Power Delivery 3.0.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C: This port also carries DisplayPort and Power Delivery, but ASUS does not identify it as the USB4 eGPU port in the XG Mobile compatibility documentation.
Use the port marked for USB4 in the Ally X’s chassis or manual, rather than choosing by appearance. A cable connected to the other Type-C port may still charge the handheld or drive a display, yet fail to provide the interface required by the XG Mobile.

What ASUS officially supports
ROG XG Mobile (2025)
ASUS’s compatibility table names the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, RC73XA, USB4 connection and BIOS 306 as the supported combination for the 2025 XG Mobile. This is the clearest documented path because the handheld and eGPU are covered in the same compatibility guidance.
The XG Mobile is a product family with different GPU configurations. ASUS’s product FAQ says an Ally X can connect to an ROG XG Mobile and receive performance of up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. That statement identifies the highest advertised XG Mobile configuration; it does not promise that every XG Mobile contains that GPU, nor does it establish a universal game benchmark.
Why the USB4 connection matters
An external GPU sends rendered frames and other data over the USB4 link. The link is substantially different from installing a desktop graphics card directly in a motherboard slot, so real-world results depend on the game, resolution, frame rate, CPU workload, display path and the enclosure’s implementation. The published ASUS material confirms compatibility, but it does not publish an independent benchmark for this exact Ally X and XG Mobile combination.

Check these requirements before connecting
- Handheld model: Confirm that the device is the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA.
- BIOS: Install BIOS 306 or a later release before first connection.
- Correct port: Locate the USB4 Type-C connector, not merely any USB-C connector.
- External GPU power: The XG Mobile must be connected to AC power. A USB-C cable alone cannot power the XG Mobile’s GPU.
- Data cable: Use the Thunderbolt/USB4 cable supplied with the XG Mobile or one that the enclosure maker specifies for the required mode, speed and power characteristics.
- Windows updates: Apply pending Windows, chipset and graphics-driver updates before troubleshooting a new installation.
- Display plan: If possible, have a monitor ready to connect directly to the XG Mobile’s video output.
- Firmware and software: Be prepared for Armoury Crate, XG Mobile firmware or graphics-driver prompts. The exact sequence can change as ASUS, Windows and GPU software are updated.
Step-by-step: connect the 2025 ROG XG Mobile
- Update the Ally X BIOS. In Windows, open the Ally X’s ASUS support or update utility, check the installed BIOS version and install BIOS 306 or newer if necessary. Keep the handheld connected to its charger and do not interrupt the update. Restart when prompted.
- Install current platform and graphics software. Finish available Armoury Crate, chipset and graphics-driver updates. The compatibility documentation does not prescribe one permanent driver order, so follow the prompts shown for your current XG Mobile firmware, GPU and Windows build.
- Shut down demanding applications. Close games, GPU-accelerated creative applications and virtual machines before making the connection. This reduces the chance that a program holds the internal adapter while Windows is enumerating the external one.
- Connect the XG Mobile to AC power. Plug the XG Mobile into a suitable mains outlet and switch it on if its model has a power control. The external GPU needs its own power supply.
- Connect the cable to the Ally X’s USB4 port. Insert the XG Mobile’s Thunderbolt cable into the USB4 Type-C connector on the RC73XA. Do not use the second Type-C port as a substitute for the documented USB4 connection.
- Wait for device enumeration. Give Windows time to detect the XG Mobile, install or activate its driver and expose its display outputs. Armoury Crate or a Windows notification may show the device becoming available.
- Complete any ASUS prompts. If Armoury Crate requests XG Mobile firmware, system components or a restart, complete those steps before launching a game. Firmware interruptions can leave the device unavailable until the process is repeated.
- Attach the monitor to the XG Mobile. Connect the gaming monitor’s DisplayPort or HDMI cable to an output on the external GPU when possible. Select the monitor’s matching input and set its refresh rate in Windows display settings.
- Confirm the active adapter. Open Windows Settings or Device Manager and verify that the external GPU appears without a warning icon. Launch a game and select the external monitor if the title offers a display choice.
- Test with a modest workload first. Run a game or graphics application for several minutes, checking for driver resets, flicker, disconnects or unexpected use of the Ally X’s internal GPU. Only after a stable test should you move to longer sessions or demanding settings.
Why connect the monitor directly to the eGPU?
The XG Mobile can render frames for a monitor attached to its own video output. This is generally the cleaner signal path because the rendered frames do not have to travel back over USB4 to the Ally X’s built-in panel. It also avoids making the handheld display’s return path part of the performance equation.
You can still use the Ally X’s internal screen when your setup requires it, but ASUS has not published a benchmark comparing internal-screen and external-monitor performance for this exact configuration. Treat the direct-monitor arrangement as an engineering best practice, not as a guaranteed percentage improvement.
For a desk setup, connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, network adapter and other high-bandwidth peripherals to the XG Mobile where its ports support them. Keeping those devices on the external unit can simplify cable management, although the exact port selection and bandwidth sharing depend on the XG Mobile model.

Disconnecting without corrupting a session
An eGPU is not just a passive video cable. Applications may have allocated memory on the external adapter, so unplugging while a game or 3D application is active can cause a crash, a black screen or an unrecoverable driver state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Save work and close games, video editors, 3D tools and other applications using the external GPU.
- Close launchers or overlays that may still be holding a graphics process open.
- Use the Windows eject or disconnect control, or the ASUS software control, when it reports that the XG Mobile can be removed.
- Wait for the software confirmation before unplugging the USB4 cable.
- Disconnect the cable, then turn off or unplug the XG Mobile if you are finished using it.
If Windows does not offer a safe-removal state, do not force the cable out during active rendering. Close more applications, wait for GPU activity to stop and try the software control again. A restart is safer than repeated hot-unplugging when the device remains busy.
Using a third-party USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosure
The Ally X’s USB4 and Thunderbolt 4-compatible port makes a generic USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 eGPU enclosure a plausible option. However, ASUS’s cited compatibility material does not certify every independent enclosure. Compatibility depends on the exact enclosure, its controller firmware, the desktop GPU, power supply, cable and current Windows driver behavior.

Before purchasing, obtain the enclosure model’s own compatibility statement. Confirm that it supports external GPUs rather than only storage or displays, accepts the GPU size and power draw you intend to use, and supplies the correct cable and firmware updater. A seller’s statement that a product is “USB-C” is not enough: USB-C describes the connector shape, not the USB4, Thunderbolt or eGPU capability behind it.
ASUS XG Mobile versus a generic enclosure
| Decision factor | 2025 ROG XG Mobile | Third-party USB4/Thunderbolt enclosure |
|---|---|---|
| RC73XA certification | Named in ASUS’s compatibility table. | Must be verified for the exact model. |
| Minimum BIOS | BIOS 306 or later is listed for RC73XA. | The enclosure maker may specify additional BIOS, firmware or driver requirements. |
| Interface | USB4 connection using the supplied Thunderbolt cable. | May use USB4 or Thunderbolt 4; confirm the operating mode rather than relying on the connector shape. |
| Thunderbolt 5 | ASUS states that Thunderbolt 5 devices are backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, and lists the 2025 XG Mobile as supported. | Compatibility is not universal; check the exact dock or enclosure and its current firmware. |
| Power supply | Integrated into the XG Mobile product design and required from AC. | Capacity, connector and included supply vary by model. |
| GPU choice | Sold as a configured XG Mobile product, with ASUS advertising configurations up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. | May accept a desktop GPU, a laptop GPU module or no upgradeable GPU at all; read the enclosure specification. |
| Video outputs | Use the outputs provided on the XG Mobile. | Check the number and type of outputs and connect the monitor directly when possible. |
| Updates and support | ASUS Armoury Crate, firmware and support process. | Depends on the enclosure manufacturer, GPU vendor and Windows driver stack. |
| Cable | Use the supplied or approved Thunderbolt cable. | Verify length, certification and USB4/Thunderbolt capability; a charge-only USB-C cable will not work. |
Does a Thunderbolt 5 eGPU dock work?
Do not assume that a Thunderbolt 5 dock will work simply because the Ally X has USB4. ASUS’s support guidance says Thunderbolt 5 devices are backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, and it identifies the 2025 XG Mobile as supported. That does not amount to a blanket approval for every third-party Thunderbolt 5 eGPU dock.
Recommended Free Tools
Some user reports in an ASUS forum describe incompatibility with particular third-party Thunderbolt 5 eGPU docks. Those reports are anecdotal rather than controlled testing, but they are enough reason to check the exact dock model’s firmware notes, return policy and compatibility statement before buying. If the manufacturer does not explicitly describe USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 fallback with external GPUs, treat the purchase as uncertain.

Does the Ally X support OCuLink?
There is no documented native OCuLink connector on the ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS’s published port list includes one USB4 Type-C port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, microSD and audio, but no OCuLink port.
An adapter or custom hardware modification would not be the same as native OCuLink support and could introduce signal-integrity, power, firmware and warranty problems. For a supported setup, use the USB4 connection and an enclosure or XG Mobile designed for it.
Troubleshooting checklist
The eGPU is not detected
- Confirm the handheld is RC73XA and has BIOS 306 or later.
- Move the cable to the USB4 Type-C port; the second Type-C port is not the documented XG Mobile eGPU port.
- Check that the XG Mobile is receiving AC power and that its power indicator or switch shows an active state.
- Disconnect and reconnect the approved cable after closing GPU-using applications.
- Install pending Armoury Crate, chipset, XG Mobile firmware and graphics-driver updates, then restart.
- For a third-party enclosure, verify that its firmware supports eGPUs and that its GPU is on the enclosure maker’s supported list.
The monitor stays black
- Connect the monitor directly to an output on the XG Mobile rather than routing it through the Ally X first.
- Select the monitor’s correct input and confirm that Windows sees it in Display settings.
- Try another video output on the XG Mobile and a known-good cable rated for the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
- Restart after the external GPU appears in Device Manager but the display remains unavailable.
Games still use the integrated GPU
- Start the game with the external monitor connected to the XG Mobile.
- In Windows graphics settings, assign the game to the high-performance GPU when the option is available.
- Check the game’s display-adapter selection and restart the game after changing it.
- Remember that a display connected to the Ally X’s internal panel can involve a return path; test on a monitor connected directly to the eGPU before diagnosing performance.
The connection drops under load
- Check that the USB4/Thunderbolt cable is fully seated and not damaged.
- Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved cable and avoid unnecessary extensions or hubs between the Ally X and eGPU.
- Confirm that the XG Mobile or enclosure power supply is correctly connected and adequately rated for its GPU.
- Update enclosure firmware and graphics drivers, then retest with a less demanding application.
- If only a third-party Thunderbolt 5 dock fails, consult that exact model’s compatibility notes rather than assuming the Ally X’s USB4 port is defective.
Performance expectations
An external GPU can provide substantially more graphics capacity than the handheld’s integrated graphics, but the USB4 link, CPU, game engine and display resolution still influence the result. A high-end GPU does not automatically produce a fixed frame rate, and the RTX 5090 Laptop figure advertised for the XG Mobile is not a benchmark for every game or display configuration.
Performance is usually easiest to evaluate with the monitor attached directly to the eGPU, a stable power connection and current drivers. Compare the same game settings, resolution and frame-rate cap when testing. If the external GPU is busy but frame rates remain unexpectedly low, investigate CPU limits, in-game settings, background software and whether the game is rendering on the intended adapter before blaming the USB4 link.
Buying checklist for an external GPU setup
- Write down the exact Ally X model and current BIOS version.
- Prefer the 2025 ROG XG Mobile when you want the path ASUS explicitly lists for RC73XA.
- If choosing another enclosure, obtain written model-specific confirmation of USB4 or Thunderbolt eGPU support.
- Check whether the enclosure accepts a desktop GPU, a particular laptop GPU module or only a fixed configuration.
- Verify the power supply, GPU power connectors, physical clearance and cooling requirements.
- Confirm the enclosure’s video outputs and plan to connect the gaming monitor directly to them.
- Check cable length and certification; do not substitute an unverified USB-C charging cable.
- Read firmware, Windows-driver and warranty instructions before opening the enclosure or installing a GPU.
- For Thunderbolt 5 products, verify fallback behavior and current firmware for the exact model rather than relying on the general USB4 backward-compatibility statement.
- Buy from a seller with a practical return window in case the enclosure and RC73XA combination does not enumerate reliably.
The Bottom Line
For the documented setup, update the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) to BIOS 306 or later, connect the 2025 ROG XG Mobile to the handheld’s USB4 Type-C port, power the XG Mobile from AC and attach the monitor directly to its video output. Generic USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 enclosures may work but require model-by-model verification; Thunderbolt 5 docks are not universally guaranteed, and the Ally X has no native OCuLink port.
