If your AirPods don’t appear on your MacBook, turn on Bluetooth, put the AirPods into model-appropriate pairing mode, then select them under Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. If they still aren’t listed, check their charge and macOS, retry pairing, and reset only after the simpler steps fail.
Pair AirPods with your MacBook

On your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.

Put both AirPods in their charging case and open the lid. Make sure the earbuds are charging.

Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the gesture for your model. For specified newer case models, double-tap the front of the case. For other case models, hold the setup button on the back until the status light flashes white. AirPods Max uses a different procedure; follow Apple’s model-specific setup instructions.

In Bluetooth settings, find the AirPods under Nearby Devices and click Connect.
Pairing gestures and macOS compatibility requirements vary by model. Check Apple’s Mac setup and compatibility instructions for your exact AirPods before proceeding if you are unsure which gesture to use.

If your AirPods still don’t appear
Check charge and update macOS
Confirm both earbuds are in the case and charging, then install the latest macOS update available for your Mac. Apple includes these checks in its AirPods connection troubleshooting steps.
Restart the pairing attempt

Put the AirPods in the case and close the lid for 15 seconds.

Open the lid and use the pairing gesture for your model until the status light flashes white.

Return to System Settings > Bluetooth and check Nearby Devices again.

Reset only if retrying fails
If the charge check, macOS update, and clean pairing attempt do not help, use Apple’s reset instructions for your exact AirPods model. Reset gestures differ by generation, so do not assume one button sequence applies to every pair. After a reset, pair the AirPods again to use them.

A Bluetooth connection does not always mean the Mac has selected the AirPods for audio. Open Control Center, choose the sound output controls, and select your AirPods as the output device. Apple includes this step in its Mac setup instructions.

When automatic connection does not work
AirPods already set up with an iPhone should connect automatically when the Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account. If they do not, pair them manually through Bluetooth settings using the steps above. See Apple’s instructions for using AirPods across Apple devices.
When to contact Apple Support
If the model-correct pairing gesture, charging check, available macOS update, retry, and model-specific reset still do not resolve the issue, contact Apple Support. These steps alone cannot establish whether the remaining cause is hardware, account configuration, or another device-specific issue, so avoid assuming that a replacement is necessary.
