To use a VGA CRT monitor with a Steam Machine, connect the Machine’s DisplayPort output to an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, then connect the adapter to the monitor’s 15-pin VGA input. The Steam Machine has DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 outputs, but no native VGA, composite, or component output. If your CRT is a television with yellow composite or red/green/blue component inputs, use an HDMI-to-analog downscaler made for that input type instead.

Identify the CRT input before buying anything

“CRT monitor” can describe two very different connection situations. A computer CRT usually has a 15-pin VGA socket. A CRT television commonly has composite video (one yellow RCA socket) or component video (three RCA sockets labeled Y, Pb, and Pr). The correct converter depends on that input, not merely on the fact that the screen uses a cathode-ray tube.

CRT display input Steam Machine source to use Required conversion What to buy
15-pin VGA (DE-15) DisplayPort 1.4 Digital DisplayPort to analog VGA Active, unidirectional DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter
Composite video (yellow RCA) HDMI 2.0 Digital HDMI to composite analog video HDMI-to-composite downscaler that documents the television’s input standard and output modes
Component video (YPbPr) HDMI 2.0 Digital HDMI to component analog video HDMI-to-component downscaler that explicitly supports YPbPr and the required resolution and refresh rate
Only an antenna or RF connector HDMI 2.0 Additional RF modulation equipment Not covered by the direct VGA/composite/component methods in this guide

Do not order a VGA adapter until you have confirmed that the display actually has VGA. Likewise, an HDMI-to-composite converter cannot be plugged into a component-only television, and a component converter is not a substitute for a yellow composite input.

What the Steam Machine can output

Valve lists two display outputs for the Steam Machine: DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. There is no built-in VGA, composite, or component jack. A digital output therefore needs an electronic converter before it can drive an analog CRT input.

Steam Support identifies 1080p as the default game resolution used for its Steam Machine verified-testing baseline. That does not mean every CRT or converter accepts 1080p. CRTs have their own horizontal-frequency and vertical-refresh limits, while a downscaler may expose only a small set of fixed output modes. The usable mode is the one supported by both the display and the converter.

Best connection for a VGA CRT monitor

Why the adapter must be active

DisplayPort carries a digital signal. VGA carries an analog RGB signal. An active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter contains electronics that decode the digital signal and generate the analog one. A passive plug merely changes the physical connector and cannot perform that conversion.

Check the direction printed on the adapter. It should say DisplayPort source to VGA display, or equivalent wording. A VGA-to-DisplayPort converter is the reverse direction and will not work when the Steam Machine is the source. Some adapters are bus-powered; others require a USB power lead. Follow the power requirement in the adapter’s documentation.

As an example of the type of product required, the DP2VGAHD20 datasheet describes a unidirectional DisplayPort-source-to-VGA-display adapter and lists Linux compatibility. Linux support is relevant because SteamOS is Linux-based, but it does not guarantee that every CRT mode will work; the adapter’s stated resolution and refresh limits still apply.

VGA connection: step by step

  1. Shut down both devices. Turn off the Steam Machine and the CRT. This avoids diagnosing a changing signal while you are moving connectors.
  2. Connect DisplayPort at the source. Plug a DisplayPort cable into the Steam Machine’s DisplayPort output and the other end into the active adapter’s DisplayPort input. If the adapter has an attached DisplayPort plug, connect that plug directly to the Machine.
  3. Attach the CRT cable. Connect the adapter’s VGA socket or plug to the monitor’s 15-pin VGA connector. Tighten the thumb screws enough to hold the plug securely; do not force a misaligned connector.
  4. Provide adapter power if specified. Connect the adapter’s USB power lead or other required supply. A bus-powered unit may not have a separate lead, but its documentation determines the requirement.
  5. Turn on the monitor first. Select its VGA input if the monitor has more than one source. Allow the CRT to warm up and display its input status.
  6. Start the Steam Machine. Wait for the SteamOS interface. If the CRT reports “no signal,” leave the Machine connected directly through the adapter while troubleshooting; remove docks, switches, receivers, and soundbars.
  7. Choose a documented display mode. In SteamOS, open the display settings from the Settings menu and select a resolution and refresh rate that the CRT and adapter both list as supported. Begin with a conservative mode if you are uncertain, then test other documented modes one at a time.

What to expect from the picture

A VGA CRT does not behave like a fixed-pixel LCD. It draws the incoming scan timing, so an unsupported horizontal frequency or refresh rate can produce a blank screen, rolling image, flicker, or an “out of range” message. The active adapter may also restrict the available modes even when the monitor itself is capable of more. SteamOS can only select modes exposed by the display path.

Do not assume that the Steam Machine’s 1080p default is an appropriate CRT setting. If the image is unstable, choose a lower resolution or refresh rate that the monitor’s on-screen information or manual identifies. Keep the mode within the adapter’s specification as well; a mode acceptable to the CRT can still exceed the converter’s limits.

Connecting a CRT television with composite or component video

Composite television (yellow RCA)

Use this path when the television has a single yellow video socket, usually beside red and white audio sockets. Connect the Steam Machine’s HDMI output to an HDMI-to-composite downscaler designed for that television input. Then connect the scaler’s yellow output to the TV’s composite input and select that input on the television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The converter, rather than the Steam Machine alone, determines which low-resolution modes are available. Read its specification for the supported input timing, output standard, and any switch for regional television formats. The television’s own manual may also limit which signals it accepts. A converter that outputs only a format your set does not recognize will still produce a blank screen.

Component television (YPbPr)

For a set with red, green, and blue RCA video sockets labeled Y, Pb, and Pr, choose an HDMI-to-component downscaler that explicitly supports YPbPr. Connect HDMI from the Steam Machine to the scaler, then connect each component lead to the matching color and label on the television. Select the component input on the TV.

Component video is not the same electrical signal as VGA, even though both use three color-related channels. A VGA adapter cannot be wired into YPbPr with a simple cable. The scaler must perform the digital-to-analog conversion and generate a component timing the television accepts.

Audio on a CRT television

HDMI can carry digital audio into a converter, but whether sound emerges from the television’s red and white RCA inputs depends on the specific scaler. Check that the unit documents audio extraction or analog audio output if you want the TV speakers to work. If it provides video only, use a separate audio path from the Steam Machine or an audio device; do not assume the analog video cable carries sound.

Choosing between DisplayPort and HDMI

Decision point VGA CRT monitor Composite/component CRT television
Preferred Steam Machine output DisplayPort 1.4 HDMI 2.0
Converter type Active DP-to-VGA HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-component downscaler
Direction DisplayPort source → VGA display HDMI source → analog TV input
Passive adapter acceptable? No; digital-to-analog electronics are required No; a scaler must convert HDMI to the selected analog format
Mode selection Must be within CRT and adapter resolution/refresh ranges Must be one of the scaler’s documented output modes and accepted by the TV
Linux/SteamOS consideration Prefer an adapter whose documentation states Linux compatibility Check the scaler’s documented compatibility and HDMI timing requirements
Power Some adapters are bus-powered; some need USB power Downscalers generally require their specified external power
Audio VGA carries video only; plan a separate audio connection Audio handling varies by scaler; verify analog audio support

Use DisplayPort for a VGA computer monitor because it avoids an unnecessary HDMI conversion step. Use HDMI for an analog television because the required downscalers are normally designed around HDMI input. The input type and documented mode support matter more than the connector’s physical convenience.

SteamOS setup after the cable is connected

Set a safe initial mode

Once SteamOS is visible, open its display settings and inspect the modes offered for the connected display. Select a resolution and refresh rate explicitly listed by the CRT or converter. Apply the change and wait for the confirmation prompt. If the screen goes blank, wait for SteamOS to revert or use the system’s recovery path; avoid repeatedly selecting an undocumented mode.

Test desktop and games separately

The SteamOS desktop and a game can request different resolutions or refresh rates. Confirm that the desktop remains stable first. Then launch a game and check its video settings. If a game switches to an unsupported mode, return to its settings and choose the same safe mode used on the desktop, when the game offers that choice.

Keep the connection simple while configuring

For initial setup, connect the Steam Machine directly to the active adapter or downscaler and then to the CRT. Bypass AV receivers, HDMI switches, docks, capture devices, and soundbars. Each additional device can change the handshake or restrict the modes SteamOS sees. Add other equipment only after the direct path works.

Troubleshooting a blank or unstable CRT image

No picture at power-on

  • Confirm that the CRT is powered and showing the correct input: VGA, composite, or component as appropriate.
  • Check that the active adapter or downscaler has its required power. A powered-on CRT does not prove that the converter is powered.
  • Reseat the cable at both ends. Inspect for a partially inserted DisplayPort, HDMI, or VGA plug.
  • Remove docks, switches, receivers, and soundbars and connect the Machine directly through the conversion path.
  • Verify direction. The VGA adapter must accept DisplayPort from the Steam Machine and output VGA; a reverse-direction adapter will not substitute.
  • Try another known-good cable where available, then test the adapter with another display if one is available.

“Out of range,” rolling, or flickering image

  • Choose a lower resolution and refresh rate that the CRT reports as supported.
  • Check the adapter’s documented maximum resolution and refresh rate; the converter can be the limiting component.
  • Do not treat 1080p as a universal CRT mode. It is the Steam Machine’s default game-resolution baseline, not a guarantee for analog displays.
  • Apply one mode change at a time so you know which setting restored the picture.

Composite or component television remains blank

  • Confirm that the converter matches the physical input: yellow composite versus YPbPr component.
  • Select the matching input on the television rather than relying on automatic input detection.
  • Check that the converter supports the HDMI input timing produced by the Steam Machine and outputs a television standard accepted by the set.
  • Use the converter’s documented low-resolution modes. The TV may reject a mode even if the Steam Machine can generate it.

Picture works but sound does not

VGA carries no audio. For a VGA CRT, connect audio separately to speakers, headphones, or another compatible audio device. With a composite or component setup, verify whether the HDMI downscaler extracts audio to red/white RCA outputs. If it does not, route sound separately from the Steam Machine.

Buying checklist

Before ordering, write down the CRT’s exact input and the modes it accepts. Then verify every item below against the adapter or scaler documentation:

  • Input and output direction: DisplayPort source to VGA display for a computer CRT; HDMI source to the specific analog TV input for a television.
  • Active conversion: Required for DisplayPort-to-VGA. A passive mechanical plug is not enough.
  • Resolution and refresh range: The converter must support a mode the CRT accepts. Look for explicit figures, not a generic “works with monitors” statement.
  • SteamOS/Linux compatibility: Prefer documentation that identifies Linux support for a VGA adapter, while still checking the CRT’s timing limits.
  • Power requirements: Note USB leads, external power supplies, and any requirement to power the converter before the Steam Machine.
  • Audio handling: VGA needs a separate audio path; TV scalers vary in whether they provide analog audio output.
  • Physical connectors: Match DisplayPort, HDMI, DE-15 VGA, yellow composite, or YPbPr sockets exactly. Color alone is not enough for component connections; follow the labels.

What this setup cannot guarantee

No adapter can make every CRT accept every modern display mode. The Steam Machine outputs a digital signal, the converter supports a defined set of timings, and the CRT has its own electrical limits. A successful connection therefore depends on the intersection of those three specifications.

An active DP-to-VGA adapter is the correct solution for a VGA CRT, but it does not convert audio and may expose fewer modes than the monitor can use directly. An HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-component downscaler can feed an analog television, but its output standard and fixed modes determine whether that particular set displays a picture. When specifications do not list a required resolution, refresh rate, input standard, or direction, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming the cable will work.

Recommended installation sequence

  1. Identify the CRT input and read the monitor or television manual for accepted resolutions, refresh rates, and input standards.
  2. Choose the matching active adapter or HDMI downscaler and verify direction, power, and mode specifications.
  3. Power off the Steam Machine and CRT, then build the shortest direct connection with no intermediary switch or receiver.
  4. Power the converter as required, turn on the CRT, select its input, and start the Steam Machine.
  5. In SteamOS display settings, select a documented conservative mode before experimenting with other modes.
  6. Test the SteamOS desktop, then a game, and handle audio through a separate path when VGA or a video-only scaler is involved.
  7. If the image fails, return to the troubleshooting checks in order: input selection, power, cable seating, direct connection, direction, and a lower supported mode.
