To connect a smart TV, open its network settings, choose Wi-Fi, select your home network, and enter the password. If it will not connect—or says it is connected but has no internet—check the network and password first, then test another device on the same Wi-Fi to see whether the problem is the TV, router, or internet service.
How to connect a smart TV to Wi-Fi
- Open the TV’s Settings and look for Network, Connection, or Internet settings.
- Choose the option to set up or connect to a wireless network.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Check for typing errors, including capitalization and any easily confused characters.
- If the TV offers a connection test, run it and note whether it reports a problem with the wireless network or with internet access.
Menu names and paths vary by manufacturer, model, and software version. For example, LG’s support instructions provide different paths for different webOS versions. Use the guide for your exact TV if the labels above do not match.
If your TV has an Ethernet port and your router is reachable by cable, you can connect the TV directly to the router and select a wired connection if prompted. Roku says a wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi and can help determine whether the wireless connection is the problem. Roku’s connection guide and connection-check guidance describe the option; TV features and menus vary.
Why won’t my TV connect to Wi-Fi?
Check the network name and password
Make sure the TV is trying to join the intended network, rather than a nearby network with a similar name. Re-enter the password carefully. Incorrect credentials are a common connection error in Roku’s troubleshooting guidance.

Find out whether the problem affects other devices
Connect a phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi and try opening a public website. If that device also cannot get online, the issue may be with the router, modem or gateway, or internet provider—not the TV. If other devices work normally, focus on the TV’s settings, compatibility, or signal at its location.
Restart the TV and network equipment
Restart the TV, or unplug it if that is the appropriate restart method for your model. Then restart the router and modem or gateway according to their instructions. Roku places restarting near the beginning of its troubleshooting flow; see its connection error guidance and Wi-Fi improvement steps.

Check Wi-Fi band compatibility
Some TVs support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi but not 5 GHz. Sony documents that a TV without 5 GHz support can use 2.4 GHz, and Samsung notes that certain older models are limited to 2.4 GHz. If your router shows separate networks for each band, try the band supported by your exact TV model. Check the TV and router documentation before changing router channels: Roku notes that some devices cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels, so a missing 5 GHz network does not by itself mean the TV is faulty.
My TV is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet
Being connected to the router is not the same as having access to the wider internet. A TV’s connection test may distinguish wireless/network access from internet access. Try another device on the same Wi-Fi and open a public website: if it also fails, check for an internet-provider outage or contact your ISP. A password or signal adjustment will not fix a service outage.

Roku Support gives these download-speed figures as general streaming guidance: SD, 3 Mbps; HD, 5 Mbps; and 4K Ultra HD, 25 Mbps or more. The page does not state a publication year, and the figures are not universal guarantees: individual streaming apps may have their own requirements. Speed alone also does not identify weak Wi-Fi signal or an intermittent connection. See Roku’s connection-check guidance.
My TV can’t find the Wi-Fi network or has a weak signal
Improve the wireless path
Where practical, move the TV or router to improve the signal path. Walls and other obstacles, nearby interference, and network congestion can contribute to a weak or inconsistent connection. If the TV’s connection test reports a signal category, use it to check whether the wireless link itself is weak. Roku’s Wi-Fi improvement guide discusses signal and placement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Try another supported band
If the router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try another one only if the TV supports it. Neither band is always the best choice: consider the TV’s supported bands, the router’s configuration, signal quality where the TV sits, and any model-specific channel restrictions.
Test with Ethernet when possible
If the TV has an Ethernet port and a cable can reach the router, test a wired connection. If the TV works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, that points toward the wireless setup or signal rather than a general inability to reach the internet. The wired test is useful only when the TV supports it and the router can be connected by cable.

When to contact your ISP or TV manufacturer
- Other devices also cannot reach the internet: check for a local service outage or contact your internet provider.
- Only the TV fails after the basic checks: consult the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting or support. LG’s internet connection troubleshooting includes guidance tied to webOS version.
- Considering a factory reset: treat it as a last resort because it erases device settings. Roku places factory reset after other troubleshooting steps in its Wi-Fi improvement guidance.
Roku’s detailed Wi-Fi improvement guide is for UK support, its setup guide is for Australia, and its error guide is for Canada. The diagnostic principles are useful more broadly, but menus, device features, and local ISP escalation can vary by region and model.
