To connect a Ring doorbell, use the Ring app: select Set Up a Device, scan the doorbell’s QR code, put the doorbell into setup mode when prompted, then join your home Wi-Fi network in the app. Keep your phone close to the doorbell and have the network password ready. If it will not connect, first identify whether the problem is the phone-to-doorbell setup link, Wi-Fi band or signal, password, router security, internet access, or device power.

Before you start

  • Update the Ring app and your phone or tablet.
  • Have the home Wi-Fi password ready. Check that the phone can connect to the same network.
  • Fully charge a battery- or solar-powered doorbell before setup.
  • Keep the phone close to the doorbell during setup. The app temporarily connects the phone to a Ring network before it joins the home network.
  • Identify the exact Ring model and your country before relying on model-specific 5 GHz or router-channel guidance.

Connect the doorbell in the Ring app

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Set Up a Device.
  2. Scan the doorbell’s QR code and follow the prompts to select the device and location. If scanning fails, choose manual setup. The QR code may be on the back of the doorbell or under its removable faceplate, depending on the model.
  3. When prompted, press the doorbell’s setup button. Ring says the light around the button begins spinning as the device enters setup mode and creates a temporary Wi-Fi network.
  4. Let the phone connect to the temporary network, usually named Ring- or Ring Setup followed by letters and numbers. If it does not connect automatically, open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, select that network, then return to the Ring app.
  5. Choose your home Wi-Fi network from the list and enter its password. Stay near the doorbell while the app completes setup.
  6. Allow any firmware update to finish. Do not remove power or press the setup button during an update.

Which Wi-Fi band does a Ring doorbell use?

Ring says all of its devices are compatible with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while only some models also support 5 GHz. Check the support information for your exact model rather than assuming it can join 5 GHz. Ring devices need a home Wi-Fi network; they do not work with a mobile hotspot or Bluetooth. See Ring’s Wi-Fi setup guidance and its Wi-Fi FAQ.

Available 5 GHz channels can also depend on the model and country. Ring’s regional guidance notes restrictions in Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, but channel recommendations are not universal. Use local support guidance for the exact model, or try 2.4 GHz if the model supports it.

Troubleshoot setup problems

Your home Wi-Fi name does not appear

  • Move closer to the router and check that the phone itself can see and connect to the network.
  • If the router lists separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and the 5 GHz option is missing, try 2.4 GHz. The doorbell may not support 5 GHz.
  • If coverage is weak where the doorbell is installed, Ring suggests improving coverage with a Wi-Fi extender such as Chime Pro or a mesh router. These help with range; they will not correct a password, encryption, power, or account-setup problem.

The Wi-Fi password is rejected

Confirm the password by forgetting the network on your phone and reconnecting to it with the same password. If the phone cannot connect, contact your internet provider. Also confirm that the Ring doorbell is powered and in setup mode, and follow its light pattern or audio prompt to check its status. Ring’s setup troubleshooting page covers these checks.

The app says “incompatible network”

This message can indicate unsupported Wi-Fi encryption rather than weak signal: the device sees the network but cannot join it. Ring gives WPA3 as an example and identifies Video Doorbell 3, Video Doorbell 3 Plus, Video Doorbell 4, Stick Up Cam Pro, and Spotlight Cam Pro among the affected models in its incompatible-network guidance. For those cases, Ring recommends WPA2-Personal and, where available, disabling PMF (Protected Management Frames); using a separate 2.4 GHz WPA2 network is another option. Router menus and model support vary. If you are unsure how to change these settings, ask your router manufacturer or internet provider rather than changing security settings indiscriminately.

Setup cannot reach the internet

On a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi, try loading ring.com. If it does not load, resolve the home internet connection first. Ring also advises reviewing firewall, port, and protocol settings with your provider; disconnecting extra Ethernet cables so only the main internet connection remains; and checking for multiple active routers. Ring suggests using one router or asking the provider to configure bridge mode when needed. See its network troubleshooting steps.

Get a Ring doorbell back online

  1. In the Ring app, open the doorbell’s device menu, then go to Device Settings > Device Health and select Reconnect or Change Network.
  2. Check that the doorbell has power and, for a battery model, that the battery is charged and functioning.
  3. Check the Wi-Fi signal and whether other devices can use the network. Ring’s signal guidance rates RSSI from 0 to −60 as great, −60 to −70 as okay, −70 to −80 as poor, and −80 or lower as very poor.
  4. If the network itself is stuck, restart the modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then reconnecting them. Improve coverage or try a different supported network or band if signal remains weak. Ring’s offline-device guidance describes these steps.
  5. Use a factory reset only after reconnecting and checking power, signal, and the network have failed. Reset procedures vary by model, so follow the instructions for that device.

Check whether the Wi-Fi connection is adequate

Ring’s published recommendations give these upload speeds per device. They are guidance, not a guarantee of performance; resolution, the number of Ring devices sharing the connection, router conditions, and the installation environment all matter. Ring advises adding the per-device requirements to estimate the total upload speed needed.

Video resolution Recommended upload speed per device
720p 1 Mbps
1080p 2 Mbps
1536p 2.5 Mbps
2K 10 Mbps
4K 15 Mbps

These figures and RSSI ratings are from Ring’s Wi-Fi signal and speed guidance; the page does not state a publication year. If the signal is poor only at the doorbell location, a range or mesh solution may help. If the signal is adequate, focus instead on password, router security, internet access, and device power.
