Connect the PS5 directly to an HDMI input on the older TV, select that HDMI input, and let the console detect the screen. Start with the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5; an older HDMI cable can also work for basic output. If the TV shows “No signal,” check the selected input, reseat or replace the cable, try another HDMI port, remove intermediary equipment, power-cycle both devices, and select Automatic or a lower supported resolution in the PS5 video settings.

Will a PS5 work with an older HDMI TV?

Yes. A television does not need to be new to work with a PS5. The essential requirement covered by PlayStation’s setup guidance is an available HDMI input. The console sends both picture and sound through its HDMI OUT port, while the television receives the signal through one of its HDMI inputs.

The TV’s age matters mainly because it may support fewer resolutions, refresh rates, or HDMI features than a current display. Those limits do not automatically prevent a connection. They determine which output mode the PS5 can use. Setting the console’s resolution to Automatic allows it to detect the display’s capabilities and select a mode the TV can handle.

This procedure applies to an older TV that has at least one HDMI socket. A television with only composite, component, or RF inputs requires a separate conversion path, and the official HDMI setup instructions do not validate every converter combination. Converter resolution support, HDCP handling, audio routing, and compatibility with the particular TV must be confirmed with the converter and TV manufacturers.

PowerA Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable for PlayStation 5, Cable, HDMI 2.1, PS5, Officially Licensed
  • Reliable high-performance Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • 10-foot (3 meter) length and included cable tie for ultimate setup flexibility
  • Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
  • Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
  • Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth

What you need before connecting the console

  • A PS5 console with its HDMI OUT port accessible.
  • An HDMI input on the TV.
  • An HDMI cable. The HDMI 2.1 cable supplied with the PS5 is Sony’s recommended cable for the console’s higher-performance features, although older HDMI cables can also be used.
  • Power connections for both the TV and PS5.
  • The TV remote, so you can choose the input assigned to the socket you use.

If the cable that came with the console is missing or suspected to be faulty, an Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for HDMI 2.1 is the relevant replacement or upgrade when you need higher-bandwidth output. HDMI 2.1 is not required simply to obtain basic 1080p operation on an older TV; compatibility still depends on the television’s own HDMI input and supported modes.

Connect the PS5 directly to the older TV

Use a direct connection for the first setup. Do not place a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device between the console and TV while you are establishing a picture. Intermediary equipment can introduce handshake, compatibility, or pass-through problems, making it harder to tell whether the console, cable, or TV is responsible.

  1. Find the ports. Locate the PS5 port labeled HDMI OUT and an HDMI input on the TV. TV inputs are commonly labeled with a number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
  2. Connect the cable to the PS5. Insert one end firmly into HDMI OUT. The plug should be fully seated without forcing it.
  3. Connect the other end to the TV. Use a numbered HDMI input rather than an output or an audio-return-only connection if the television labels ports differently.
  4. Turn on the TV. Give the television time to start before selecting its input.
  5. Select the matching HDMI input. With the TV remote, choose the HDMI number that corresponds to the socket holding the cable. The PS5 can be running correctly while the TV remains on another channel.
  6. Turn on the PS5. The console should negotiate a compatible display mode with the TV. The first image may take a moment to appear while the devices establish the HDMI connection.
  7. Check video output settings if needed. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Leave Resolution on Automatic initially so the console selects the highest mode the TV reports as supported.

PlayStation’s instruction material gives the same basic sequence: connect an HDMI-supported game console to the TV with an HDMI cable, turn on the television, and set its input to HDMI. A secure connection at both ends is important; PlayStation Support summarizes this as: “Make sure you have a secure connection to both your PS5 console and the screen using the included HDMI cable.”

Which HDMI cable should you use?

The cable choice affects available bandwidth and features, but it does not change the basic connection method. Every option below uses the same path: PS5 HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI input.

Cable option What the guidance establishes Best use
HDMI 2.1 cable included with the PS5 Sony recommends it for the console’s high-performance features. Use it as the default cable, especially when you may later connect the PS5 to a display that supports higher-bandwidth output.
Older HDMI cable Sony notes that older HDMI cables can also be used. Suitable when the older TV and the selected output mode are within the cable’s capabilities, including basic 1080p operation.
Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for HDMI 2.1 Identified as the relevant replacement or upgrade when higher-bandwidth output is needed. Use when the original cable is missing, damaged, or when the connected display and desired mode require the higher rating.

Do not assume that buying a newer cable will make an older TV display a mode it does not support. The cable carries the signal; the TV’s HDMI hardware still determines which resolutions and refresh rates can be shown. Conversely, do not assume that an older cable is automatically unusable. If it is in good condition and the TV accepts the selected mode, it may work normally.

When comparing replacement cables, consider the cable’s HDMI speed rating, the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use, its length, and build quality. A longer run or a cable with damaged connectors is more likely to create an intermittent picture, but the first diagnostic step is still to test a known-good cable directly between the PS5 and TV.

Set a safe video mode for an older display

Start with Automatic resolution

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set Resolution to Automatic. This lets the PS5 read the display information supplied by the TV and choose the highest mode the TV reports as supported. It is the safest starting point when you do not know the television’s exact HDMI version or resolution limits.

Use a lower supported resolution when the screen stays blank

If the TV cannot display the selected mode, return to the Video Output menu and choose a lower resolution that the television supports. The correct choice depends on the TV’s specifications and its HDMI input. Avoid selecting a mode merely because the PS5 offers it; an older panel may accept only a narrower range.

If you cannot see the menu well enough to change the setting, shut down the PS5 and use its Safe Mode display options to recover a picture, following PlayStation’s current on-screen instructions. Once an image is restored, return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and leave the console on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to select another supported mode.

Check the TV’s own signal settings

Some older televisions require a particular picture or input setting before they will accept a high-resolution signal. Check the TV’s manual and firmware information for settings related to HDMI, enhanced or high-bandwidth input, and supported resolutions. The exact labels vary by manufacturer, so use the terminology shown in the television’s menus rather than assuming every model has the same option.

Fix a PS5 “No signal” message

Work through these checks in order. The sequence begins with the simplest causes and removes variables before changing video settings.

1. Confirm the selected HDMI input

Look at the number printed beside the TV socket used by the cable, then choose that same HDMI number with the remote. If the cable is in HDMI 2 but the TV is showing HDMI 1, the screen can report no signal even though the PS5 is working.

2. Reseat both cable ends

Turn off the TV and PS5 if the plugs are difficult to access, then remove and reconnect the HDMI cable at the console and TV. Push each connector fully into its socket. Inspect the plugs for visible damage and make sure the cable is not being pulled sideways by its weight or by a tightly bent run.

3. Test another HDMI port

Move the cable to a different HDMI input on the TV and select that input. A single port can be damaged or configured differently from the others. If the picture appears on the second port, the original TV input is the likely problem rather than the PS5.

4. Test another HDMI cable

Substitute a known-good cable, preferably the one included with the PS5 or a suitable Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable. A cable swap is more informative than repeatedly restarting the same setup because it isolates a common point of failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Remove every intermediary device

Disconnect the soundbar, receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, and capture device from the video path. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV and test again. If direct connection works, reconnect one device at a time to identify which component or pass-through setting is preventing the signal.

6. Power-cycle both devices

Turn off the TV and PS5 completely. Disconnect their power cables, wait, reconnect the cables, and start the TV and PS5 again. This clears a failed HDMI handshake that may persist after simply pressing the remote’s power button.

7. Check firmware and high-resolution settings

Check the TV for available firmware updates and read its manual for settings required to accept high-resolution HDMI signals. An older TV may need a specific input mode enabled, while some ports may support different capabilities.

8. Select Automatic or a lower output mode

If the TV cannot display what the PS5 is sending, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and choose Automatic or a lower resolution supported by the television. A mode mismatch can produce a blank screen even when the cable and ports are physically connected correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose sound that is missing or muted

A picture with no audio is a separate symptom from a completely blank screen. First verify that the TV and any connected audio device are not muted and that their volume is audible. The audio path must be set to an HDMI device so the PS5 sends sound through the same connection as the picture.

  • Check the TV’s mute status and volume.
  • Check the volume or mute state of a soundbar or other audio device, if one is connected.
  • On the PS5, confirm that audio output is set to an HDMI device.
  • Test another HDMI cable if audio remains absent; a cable can fail in a way that affects sound even when a picture appears.
  • For troubleshooting, connect the PS5 directly to the TV before adding a receiver or soundbar back into the system.

After direct HDMI audio works, reconnect other equipment one piece at a time. This identifies whether the issue is the PS5, TV, cable, or an intermediary device’s audio-handling settings.

What changes when the TV has no HDMI input?

The direct procedure in this guide is for an HDMI-equipped TV. If the set has only composite video, component video, or an RF antenna input, the PS5 cannot connect with a passive cable alone. You would need an active converter or another compatible conversion device, and its specifications become part of the setup.

Before buying or configuring a converter, verify all of the following with the converter and TV manufacturers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The input format accepted from the PS5.
  • The output format produced for the television’s available socket.
  • The resolutions and refresh rates supported in both directions.
  • HDCP handling, because copy-protection negotiation can prevent a picture even when the connectors fit.
  • How audio is extracted, converted, and delivered to the TV or separate speakers.
  • Whether the specific converter model is compatible with the particular TV.

Do not treat an HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-RF adapter as equivalent to the direct HDMI setup. The official guidance cited here explains HDMI-connected TVs and does not validate a particular converter, composite, component, or RF combination.

Connection paths: reliability and trade-offs

Connection path Use during initial setup What it changes
PS5 directly to TV HDMI input Recommended baseline Minimizes handshake and pass-through variables and lets the TV report its capabilities directly to the PS5.
PS5 through a soundbar or AV receiver Test only after direct video works Adds another HDMI device and another possible source of signal, audio, or compatibility problems.
PS5 through an HDMI switch or splitter Test only after direct video works Adds switching and signal-routing hardware that can interfere with detection or pass-through.
PS5 through a capture device Test only after direct video works Adds a device that may not pass every resolution or protected signal.
PS5 through a converter to composite, component, or RF Not covered by the direct HDMI procedure Requires separate verification of resolution, HDCP, audio, and TV compatibility.

The practical rule is simple: establish a stable direct picture first, then add equipment. If the signal disappears after reconnecting one device, that device or its settings deserves focused troubleshooting.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

Plugging into the wrong direction

The PS5 connection starts at HDMI OUT. The TV side must be an HDMI input. An input-to-input or output-to-output connection cannot carry the console’s picture correctly.

Leaving the TV on the previous source

Modern TVs can remain on a cable box, streaming stick, or another HDMI number after the console is connected. Always select the input whose number matches the socket used for the PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming HDMI 2.1 is mandatory

Sony recommends the included HDMI 2.1 cable for high-performance features, but the guidance also says older HDMI cables can be used. A newer cable cannot upgrade the TV’s HDMI hardware, and a basic older-TV setup does not automatically require HDMI 2.1.

Adding accessories before proving the cable path

Receivers, soundbars, switches, splitters, and capture devices are useful in a finished system, but they complicate the first diagnosis. Keep the PS5-to-TV path direct until picture and sound are confirmed.

Choosing a mode the TV cannot display

If a manually selected resolution produces a blank screen, return to Automatic or choose a lower mode supported by the TV. The PS5 menu lists options the console can output, not a guarantee that every connected television can show each one.

A quick decision tree

  1. Is the TV HDMI-equipped? If yes, connect PS5 HDMI OUT directly to a TV HDMI input. If no, stop and verify a converter’s resolution, HDCP, audio, and model compatibility before proceeding.
  2. Is the TV showing the correct HDMI input? If no, select the matching HDMI number. If yes, continue.
  3. Is there a picture? If no, reseat the cable, try another port, try another cable, remove intermediary devices, and power-cycle both devices.
  4. Does the picture remain blank after those checks? Check TV firmware and settings, then set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or a lower supported mode.
  5. Is the picture present but sound absent? Unmute the TV and audio equipment, set PS5 audio output to an HDMI device, and test another cable.
  6. Does direct connection work but the normal setup fail? Reconnect the receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, or capture device one at a time to identify the failing link.

When to replace the cable or seek device-specific help

Replace the cable when a known-good alternative restores the picture or sound, when the connector is visibly damaged, or when the existing cable cannot support the mode required by a display that is otherwise compatible. Choose an Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for HDMI 2.1 when higher-bandwidth output is needed; do not buy it on the assumption that it will make an incompatible older TV accept a new mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consult the TV manual or manufacturer when the set has unusual HDMI labels, requires a special high-resolution input setting, reports unsupported formats after the PS5 is set to Automatic, or behaves differently across HDMI ports. Consult the converter manufacturer for any non-HDMI television because compatibility depends on the exact converter and TV combination.

Key points for a reliable older-TV setup

  • Use a direct PS5 HDMI OUT to TV HDMI input connection first.
  • Select the TV input that matches the physical HDMI socket.
  • Start with PS5 Resolution set to Automatic.
  • The included HDMI 2.1 cable is recommended for higher-performance features, while older HDMI cables may still work.
  • For “No signal,” check input, cable seating, another cable, another port, direct connection, a complete power cycle, and TV firmware or signal settings in that order.
  • For missing audio, check mute and volume states, choose an HDMI audio output on the PS5, and test another cable.
  • A TV without HDMI requires a separately verified converter setup; the direct HDMI instructions do not guarantee compatibility.
