To move a motherboard into a new case, install only the standoffs that match its screw holes, fit a separate rear I/O shield before the board, then connect the 24-pin ATX cable, CPU EPS cable, front-panel plugs, USB, audio, storage, and fans according to the motherboard manual. Do not force a screw or leave an extra standoff beneath the board: either can damage the system.
What you need before starting
- The motherboard and its manual (paper or downloaded PDF)
- The new case, its supplied screws and standoffs
- A Phillips screwdriver; a magnetic tip can help prevent dropped screws
- The power supply and all required modular cables
- Good lighting and a clean, non-carpeted work surface
If you are transferring an existing build, photograph every connector and header before unplugging it. Labeling the power-switch, USB, audio, fan, and storage cables makes a case swap much easier to reconstruct.
Check motherboard and case compatibility
Identify the board’s form factor—ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX—and verify that the case supports it. The case’s preinstalled standoff pattern is not automatically correct. Standoffs must sit directly beneath the motherboard’s mounting holes.
| What to compare | Why it matters | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard form factor | Different sizes use different mounting-hole positions. | Use the positions marked for your board size in the case tray. |
| Standoffs | An extra standoff can short the underside; a missing one leaves the board unsupported. | Install only the standoffs under actual screw holes. |
| Rear I/O opening | Ports must pass through the case opening without pressure. | Use the supplied separate shield, or skip it when the shield is integrated into the motherboard. |
| Expansion and clearance | The graphics card, CPU cooler, radiator, and drives need physical room. | Confirm the case supports the installed components before final cable routing. |
Install the motherboard safely
- Power down completely. Shut down the computer, switch the PSU off, unplug the wall cable, and remove both case side panels. Press the case power button once after unplugging to discharge residual power.
- Prepare the standoffs. Compare the board’s holes with the case tray. Remove any standoff that does not line up and move it to every required open position. Never tighten the board against an empty tray or an incorrectly placed standoff.
- Fit a separate I/O shield. From inside the case, press the shield into the rectangular rear opening until all edges and clips snap into place. Orient the labels and port cutouts correctly. Do not install a loose shield if the motherboard already has a permanently attached one.
- Lower in the board. Hold it by the edges, angle the rear ports through the I/O shield, and align the center locating post with the board’s matching hole. Check that every screw hole is over a standoff before inserting screws.
- Tighten evenly. Start each supplied motherboard screw by hand, then snug them in a crisscross pattern. Stop immediately if a hole does not align; reposition the standoff instead of pulling the board sideways.

- 24-pin ATX motherboard cable: plugs into the large connector along the board’s right edge.
- CPU EPS cable: an 8-pin connector, commonly split as 4+4, plugs near the top edge of the motherboard beside the CPU socket. Some boards provide an additional CPU power socket; use the manual and PSU instructions to determine whether it is needed.
Use the cable labeled CPU or EPS for the processor socket. A PCIe/GPU cable may look similar but is wired differently and must not be substituted. On a modular PSU, connect the cable to the PSU socket labeled CPU/EPS, not a socket intended for PCIe.
Connect the front-panel switches and LEDs
The small front-panel wires control the case’s power and reset buttons and its indicator lights. Locate the motherboard header labeled F_PANEL, JFP1, or a similar name, then follow the pin diagram in the manual.

| Case plug | Function | Polarity |
|---|---|---|
| POWER SW | Starts or shuts down the computer when the power button is pressed. | No polarity; either orientation works. |
| RESET SW | Operates the reset button, if fitted. | No polarity. |
| HDD LED | Shows storage activity. | Polarity matters; positive usually goes to the marked positive pin. |
| POWER LED (+/−) | Shows that the system is powered. | Polarity matters; reverse it if it does not light. |
Some cases provide a keyed front-panel block or an adapter that combines these individual plugs. It is easier to orient, but the motherboard’s pinout remains authoritative. If the system fans start but the case button does nothing, recheck only the POWER SW pins first.
Connect USB, audio, and fans
Front USB
Connect the case’s USB 2.0 cable to the header marked USB 2.0, and the wider USB 3.x cable to the 19-pin USB 3 header. A front USB-C cable normally uses a separate keyed USB-C header; do not force it into a USB 3 connector.

No lights, fans, or response
- Confirm the wall outlet and PSU power switch.
- Reseat the 24-pin ATX connector.
- Reseat the CPU EPS 8-pin connector near the processor.
- Check that the case POWER SW plug is on the correct front-panel pins. As a diagnostic only, the manual may show which two power-switch pins can be briefly bridged with a screwdriver; do this carefully and only with the correct diagram.
Fans run but there is no display
- Verify that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card when a discrete GPU is installed, not an unused motherboard video output.
- Reseat the graphics card and its PCIe power cables.
- Check CPU power, memory seating, and any diagnostic LEDs or beep codes described by the motherboard manual.
A button or light behaves incorrectly
Switch plugs have no polarity. LED plugs do. Reverse an LED connector if its light stays dark; an incorrectly oriented LED normally does not damage the board.

Which connections vary by build?
There is no universal front-panel pin layout. Header names, positions, optional CPU power sockets, USB-C support, fan-hub wiring, and RGB connectors differ by motherboard and case model. Use the exact motherboard and case manuals whenever a label or pin position is unclear. The stable requirements for a normal build are the correctly aligned standoffs, a properly installed I/O shield when separate, 24-pin ATX power, CPU EPS power, CPU cooling, and a correctly wired power switch.
