Connect a USB microphone directly to your PC. To connect an XLR microphone to a PC, run a balanced XLR cable from the mic to an audio interface with an XLR mic input, then connect the interface to the computer. To use a mixer, plug the XLR mic into a mixer’s mic input and follow its manual for routing audio to a computer. Select the right input in your app and set gain while monitoring its meter. Check the microphone manual before switching on phantom power.
Choose the connection path that matches your microphone
| Connection | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| USB microphone → PC | A USB mic, compatible cable, and suitable computer port | A direct computer setup; select the mic in your operating system or recording/calling app. |
| XLR microphone → audio interface → PC | Balanced XLR cable, an interface with an XLR mic input, and the interface’s computer connection | Getting an XLR mic into a computer. An interface may also provide gain controls, signal metering, monitoring, and outputs; features depend on the model. |
| XLR microphone → mixer | Balanced XLR cable and a mixer mic input | Using a mixer’s preamp and routing. The mixer’s connection to a PC depends on its outputs and model. |
Some microphones have both USB and XLR outputs. Shure’s MV7 documentation describes using USB with a computer or XLR with a mixer or stage box. Choose the output that suits your setup; the mic’s manual determines its connection requirements.
Connect a USB microphone to a PC
- Connect the microphone to a compatible computer port using its specified USB cable. If it uses a combination connector, follow the microphone manual for the correct port and cable.
- Open the recording, meeting, or streaming application and select the microphone as its input. The device name and selection steps vary by operating system and app.
- Speak or perform at your usual level while checking the app’s input meter. Adjust any available mic level so the signal is clear and does not clip.
- Make a short test recording or use the app’s input test, then listen back or confirm the meter responds.
Shure documents the MV7 as connecting to a computer over USB. This is an example of a USB mic workflow, not a guarantee that every USB microphone works with every port, operating system, or app; check the instructions for your model.
Connect an XLR microphone to a PC through an audio interface
- Check the microphone manual for its output and power requirements. Confirm that the interface has an XLR microphone input and any required phantom-power support.
- With the interface’s phantom power off, connect the microphone’s XLR output to the interface’s XLR mic input using a balanced XLR cable. Match the connector to the input labeled for a microphone, not a line or instrument input.
- Connect the interface to the computer using the connection specified by the interface manufacturer. For example, Focusrite’s Scarlett Solo setup uses USB.
- If the microphone requires phantom power, follow the mic and interface manuals to enable it. If it does not require phantom power, leave it off unless the equipment documentation says otherwise.
- In your recording or calling app, select the interface as the input device. If it offers separate inputs, choose the channel where the mic is connected.
- Speak or perform while raising the interface’s preamp gain and watching its signal indicator or meter. Keep the signal below clipping; the appropriate recording level depends on your workflow.
A computer’s built-in sound-card mic input is not a reliable substitute for an interface with many professional XLR microphones. Shure notes that such a mic can sound too quiet because the computer input expects a hotter signal.

Connect an XLR microphone to a mixer
- Check the microphone and mixer manuals for connector, mic-level input, and phantom-power requirements.
- Connect the microphone to a mixer input labeled for a microphone using a balanced XLR cable.
- If the microphone needs phantom power, use the mixer’s phantom-power control according to both manuals. Do not assume every microphone needs it.
- Set the channel gain while speaking or performing and watch the mixer’s meter or signal indicator to avoid clipping.
- If you also need the sound on a PC, consult the mixer manual for its computer connection and routing. Mixer outputs and computer paths differ by model; do not assume that every mixer sends audio to a PC over USB.
Set phantom power and input levels safely
Phantom power depends on the microphone
Do not decide whether to use phantom power based only on the connector. Shure’s PGA27 guide says condenser microphones require phantom power and specifies best performance for that model at 48 V. Shure’s MV7 guide says its XLR connection does not require phantom power. Follow the manual for your exact microphone and interface or mixer.
Match the source to the input
An XLR microphone output belongs in a mic input. Focusrite distinguishes XLR microphone connections from 1/4-inch line or instrument connections on the cited interface. Focusrite warns that feeding line-level equipment into an XLR mic input can overload the preamp; enabling phantom power in that misuse case may damage equipment. Check the labels and manual for the exact device, and do not send phantom power to a line-level source.

Use gain meters rather than a universal number
Raise preamp gain while monitoring the interface or mixer meter. Focusrite documents gain controls and signal indicators and advises avoiding clipping. There is no single target level that fits every recording workflow, so use the requirements of your recording app or production process rather than treating a particular meter reading as universal.
Troubleshoot a microphone that is not working
- No signal in the app: Check that the cable is connected securely, the correct channel is selected, and the mic is plugged into a mic input. Then confirm the app’s selected input and check whether the mic requires phantom power.
- Very quiet XLR mic on a PC: A built-in sound-card input may expect a hotter signal than a professional mic supplies. Use an audio interface with an XLR mic input, or a microphone with a built-in USB connection.
- The meter responds but the recording is distorted: Reduce preamp gain and check that the signal is not clipping. Confirm that a line-level source has not been connected to a mic input.
- USB mic is connected but missing from the app: Verify the cable and port, then select the microphone as the app’s input. Device names and operating-system selection paths vary, so consult the microphone and computer documentation.
- Unsure whether to enable phantom power: Leave it off until you have checked the microphone and interface or mixer manuals. Requirements vary by model.
- Mixer audio does not reach the computer: Check the mixer’s manual for its computer output and routing. A mic plugged into a mixer does not by itself establish that the mixer sends audio to the PC.
