Check the ports on both devices first. If the player has an HDMI OUT port and the TV has an HDMI IN port, connect them with an HDMI cable, turn them on, and select that HDMI input on the TV. If your player has only red, white, and yellow RCA plugs and your TV has no matching input, you will need a composite AV-to-HDMI converter with the correct signal direction.
Choose a connection that matches both devices
Look at the labeled ports on the back or side of the player and TV. Port availability varies by model and region, so do not assume a newer TV has analog inputs or that an older player has HDMI. Sony and Panasonic both recommend connecting the player’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI IN when HDMI is available (Sony; Panasonic).
| Connection | What must be available | Video and audio wiring | TV input to select |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI OUT on the player and HDMI IN on the TV | One HDMI cable carries digital audio and video. | The HDMI input used |
| Component video | Matching component OUT and IN ports on both devices | Three video leads, typically Y/Pb/Pr (green, blue, red), plus separate left/right audio leads, usually white and red. | Component |
| Composite RCA | Composite OUT on the player and composite IN on the TV | Yellow video plus white left audio and red right audio. | AV, Video, or Composite |
| Composite RCA to HDMI | RCA output on the player, HDMI input on the TV, and a converter that accepts composite input and outputs HDMI | Player RCA leads connect to converter AV IN; converter HDMI OUT connects to TV HDMI IN. The converter may need power. | The HDMI input used |
Connect the player with HDMI
- With the devices off, connect an HDMI cable from the player’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI IN port on the TV. A TV port labeled HDMI ARC can generally serve as an HDMI input for a player; ARC is a return-audio feature for compatible audio equipment, not a special player connection.
- Turn on the TV and player. Use the TV remote’s input or source control to select the HDMI input number you used.
- Insert a disc and start playback. Sony recommends HDMI for optimum picture quality when the player has HDMI; Panasonic describes the same OUT-to-IN connection.
Connect using analog video ports
Component video
Use component only when both devices have matching component ports. Connect the player’s three Y/Pb/Pr video OUT leads to the corresponding TV component IN ports, matching the labels and colors. Connect the separate left and right audio leads—typically white and red—from player OUT to TV IN, then select the TV’s Component input. The exact layout can vary, so follow the port labels and the manuals for both models.
Composite RCA
For a matching composite connection, connect yellow from the player’s VIDEO OUT to the TV’s VIDEO IN. Connect white to left audio and red to right audio, matching OUT to IN. Select AV, Video, or Composite on the TV. Some TVs use a 3.5 mm breakout adapter for analog input; use the adapter specified for your TV, because adapters and terminal types are not universal. Sony’s guidance notes that availability can depend on model and region (Sony Help Guide).

Connect an RCA-only player to an HDMI-only TV
Use an active composite AV to HDMI converter that takes analog composite input and outputs HDMI. The direction matters: an HDMI-to-composite device is the reverse and will not perform this conversion.
- Connect the player’s yellow, white, and red RCA OUT plugs to the converter’s matching AV IN jacks.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN port on the TV.
- Connect power to the converter if its instructions require it, then select the TV’s HDMI input and start playback.
Check the specific converter’s supported formats and the TV’s manual before buying or connecting it. Element Electronics says a converter may work in this setup, while noting that compatibility and performance vary (Element Electronics).

What picture quality to expect
Sony’s BRAVIA connectivity guidance describes HDMI as carrying HD signals, while component and composite video are displayed in standard definition (Sony BRAVIA Connectivity Guide). An RCA-to-HDMI converter changes the connection format; it cannot restore detail that was not present in the composite source, so do not expect it to turn an SD signal into genuine HD.
Quality statements can depend on the particular equipment and connection. Philips, for example, warns that composite output on its DVD/VCR product can produce poor DVD playback and recommends it for older televisions without S-Video or component inputs; that guidance concerns the listed Philips product, not every player or TV (Philips support).

If there is no picture or sound
- Check signal direction: cables should run from the player’s OUT ports to the TV’s IN ports. A converter must accept the player’s signal and output the type the TV accepts.
- Check the TV source: select the exact HDMI number or analog input used. Panasonic’s connection instructions likewise call for choosing the corresponding TV input (Panasonic support).
- Check analog colors and labels: composite uses yellow for video and white/red for audio. Component uses three video leads, often green/blue/red; its red video lead is not the red right-audio lead.
- Check any TV adapter: if the TV uses a mini-jack breakout adapter, confirm it is the specified accessory and that the TV input supports the connection type you are using.
- Check converter requirements: confirm its input is composite AV, its output is HDMI, and any required power is connected. Compatibility and results vary by converter.
