You can connect a desktop pet to a local large language model (LLM) if the pet accepts a custom endpoint or an API format your local model server supports. With Ollama, the documented local API base is http://localhost:11434/api; its OpenAI-compatible base is http://localhost:11434/v1. A local model does not, by itself, guarantee that the pet app, its optional services, or its stored data stay on your computer.
What you need before connecting the pet
- A desktop pet app with a custom provider, custom base URL, local model, or compatible API setting. The exact options depend on the app; no particular pet app’s supported formats or data practices are established here.
- A local model runtime running a model your computer can support. Ollama documents a local server API for inference; check the chosen model’s own requirements rather than assuming a particular hardware tier.
- The pet app’s documentation for its expected API protocol, route, request format, and streaming behavior. Some apps may require a separate proxy if their expected format differs from the runtime’s.
For context, an API-based interface sends a message to the selected provider, which performs inference and returns a response. Open WebUI describes this flow in its Connect Local and Cloud Models documentation.
How to connect a desktop pet to Ollama
- Install and start Ollama, then download a suitable model. Confirm that the model server is running before configuring the pet. Ollama’s API documentation describes its local inference API.
- Open the pet’s provider or model settings. Look for a custom provider, custom base URL, local model, or OpenAI-compatible endpoint field. Follow the app’s documentation for required fields and authentication; field names vary between apps.
- Enter the endpoint format the pet expects. For Ollama’s native API, use
http://localhost:11434/apias the documented API base. For an app that supports the OpenAI-compatible interface, usehttp://localhost:11434/v1. The pet may require a more specific route, such as a chat-completion path, so use the exact route and request format in its documentation rather than assuming the base URL alone is sufficient. - Send a harmless test prompt. Confirm that the pet receives a response, then check which provider and endpoint are selected. Review optional integrations before entering private information.
- Handle containers and other machines deliberately. If the pet app runs in Docker,
localhostusually refers to that container, not the host running Ollama. Open WebUI’s FAQ explains this container networking distinction. Configure a route that works for your setup without exposing the model API more broadly than necessary.
What “local” does—and does not—mean for privacy
The model endpoint controls where inference happens
The selected provider endpoint determines where the prompt is processed. Open WebUI puts it plainly: “The selected endpoint determines where inference happens.” See its provider connection documentation. If the pet is configured to call your local Ollama server, that model inference can happen on your computer.
Other parts of the app may still use the cloud
Local inference is not proof that every part of the software stack is local. Cloud tools, extraction, and embedding services can remain separate from the model endpoint; choosing a cloud model sends the prompt and included context to that provider. Open WebUI describes these boundaries in its local and cloud models guide. The same distinction is why a local model setting cannot establish what a separate desktop pet app transmits.

Check the pet’s own data handling
Review the pet app’s privacy policy and settings for telemetry, conversation history, crash reports, cloud sync, voice transcription, and account features. The documentation cited here does not identify a particular desktop pet or establish what one logs or transmits, so do not assume that “nothing leaves your device” without checking the app itself.
Keep the local API from becoming a network exposure
Use the narrowest network binding that works for your setup. Open WebUI warns that binding a service to 0.0.0.0 makes it available on all network interfaces, and advises firewall and authentication protections where exposure is possible; see its FAQ. Do not port-forward the model API or expose it to the public internet for convenience.

If you use Open WebUI’s Direct Connections feature, note that its documentation labels the feature experimental: the browser connects directly to the configured API provider and keys are stored in browser local storage. That changes both the request path and key-handling model; consult the Direct Connections documentation if this feature is part of your setup.
