For an uploaded file, inspect the encoded video with ffprobe, then check YouTube playback after processing finishes. For a live stream, compare FFmpeg’s output with the resolution detected in YouTube Live Control Room; check viewer playback separately. These checks distinguish an encoder mismatch from delayed processing or a playback-device limitation.
Check the resolution FFmpeg actually encoded
For a file upload, the dimensions in the encoded file are the direct evidence of the raster FFmpeg wrote. If you resize with FFmpeg, the scale filter sets the output width and height. For a 16:9 target, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=1920:1080" output.mp4
Use the dimensions appropriate to your target. If the source and target aspect ratios differ, setting both dimensions exactly can stretch or distort the picture. Decide whether to preserve the source shape by fitting it within bounds, adding bars, or cropping; FFmpeg documents scale options including force_original_aspect_ratio.
After encoding, inspect the first video stream with ffprobe:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,display_aspect_ratio,avg_frame_rate
-of json output.mp4
Compare width and height with the intended output. Check display_aspect_ratio when the video is not a standard shape. This verifies the local encoded file, not whether YouTube has finished processing it. See the ffprobe documentation for stream selection and output options.
For standard 16:9 video, YouTube lists 1920×1080 for 1080p, 2560×1440 for 1440p, and 3840×2160 for 4K. Other aspect ratios need not use those exact raster dimensions; assess them against the intended shape. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Why a 1080p or 4K option may be missing after upload
YouTube processes uploads in stages: lower-quality playback may become available before higher qualities. Higher resolutions can take longer—sometimes several hours—depending on factors such as quality, video length, format, and traffic. YouTube notes that a video may seem to be missing higher qualities while processing continues. A missing option shortly after upload does not by itself show that FFmpeg encoded the wrong dimensions.
- Confirm the uploaded file has the intended dimensions using
ffprobe. - Check the video’s processing status and allow time for higher-quality processing to finish.
- Check playback again in a browser or on a device that supports the target quality.
- Compare the available YouTube playback choices with the encoded dimensions; they describe different stages of the pipeline.
YouTube converts uploads into the highest resolution it makes available for playback across devices and networks. A viewer’s available choice can therefore reflect ongoing processing or device limitations rather than the source file’s dimensions. See YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance.

Verify FFmpeg resolution for a live stream
A live stream has separate encoder, ingest, and playback checks. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default; use Live Control Room to review detected settings, stream health, and messages. Compare the detected ingest resolution with the resolution you configured FFmpeg to send. Then inspect playback separately: YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats, so a viewer’s selected rendition is not necessarily the incoming resolution.
- Check FFmpeg’s configured video output dimensions and frame rate.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, review the detected ingest settings and stream-health messages.
- Compare the detected ingest resolution with the intended FFmpeg output.
- Check viewer playback as a downstream result, not as a substitute for checking ingest.
YouTube’s live guidance includes recommended bitrate ranges by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. Bitrate alone does not confirm resolution: check dimensions directly. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Use bitrate as a supporting check, not a resolution test
YouTube’s current SDR upload guidance recommends these video bitrates. They are recommendations, not guaranteed quality thresholds or proof of the output dimensions.
| Resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published SDR upload recommendations, accessed in 2026. Audio bitrate is not related to video resolution. For codec-specific and other encoding details, refer to YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot a resolution mismatch
ffprobereports smaller dimensions than intended: FFmpeg encoded a smaller raster than the target. Recheck the output scale settings and inspect the resulting file again.ffprobereports the intended dimensions, but YouTube offers only lower playback quality: allow processing to finish, then check again on a device that supports the target quality.- The image looks stretched or has unexpected bars: compare the source and output aspect ratios. Choose whether to fit, crop, or stretch rather than forcing mismatched dimensions without accounting for shape.
- A live stream’s playback quality differs from FFmpeg’s output: check the resolution detected in Live Control Room and stream health first. Viewer playback is downstream of YouTube’s live transcoding.
- The bitrate looks right, but resolution is uncertain: bitrate recommendations do not prove dimensions. Inspect the upload with
ffprobe, or check detected ingest settings for a live stream.
