If Windows is running out of memory, the safest first step is usually to leave the paging file set to Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Windows can then expand or shrink the page file as your workload and disk space require. Set a custom size only when you are troubleshooting allocation errors, slow page-file growth, or a specific requirement for a predictable commit limit. A page file can prevent some out-of-memory failures, but it cannot deliver the capacity or speed of additional physical RAM.

What virtual memory is and what it can (and cannot) fix

Windows virtual memory is the combination of physical RAM and one or more page files stored on disk. The main page file is normally a hidden file named pagefile.sys. When memory pressure rises, Windows can move infrequently accessed modified pages from RAM to the page file, freeing RAM for data that active programs need. Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “Page files enable the system to remove infrequently accessed modified pages from physical memory to let the system use physical memory more efficiently for more frequently accessed pages.”

The page file also increases the system’s commit limit. Commit limit is roughly the amount of physical RAM plus the space reserved in all page files. A program that requests committed memory must fit within that limit, even if much of the data is not currently resident in RAM. A page file can therefore prevent an allocation from failing when RAM alone would be insufficient, and it can help Windows create certain crash dumps.

Disk storage is much slower than RAM. If Windows is constantly moving pages between RAM and storage, the computer may feel sluggish even though programs remain open. Increasing the page file does not make those transfers as fast as RAM, and it does not increase physical-memory bandwidth. An SSD can reduce paging latency compared with a hard disk, but it still does not turn storage into RAM.

Decide whether you need to change anything

Changing the page file is not a routine performance tweak. For ordinary Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktops and laptops, the system-managed setting is the normal choice. It adapts to changing workloads, preserves a page file for crash-dump support, and avoids choosing a limit that is too small for a future workload.

First identify what is actually failing. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the Performance tab, and choose Memory. Note the amount in use, the available memory, and the Committed value shown on the memory page. The first number is current committed usage; the second is the current commit limit. A warning is most relevant when committed usage is approaching that limit, not merely when the page file itself shows activity.

On the Processes tab, sort by the Memory column. A single browser session, game, virtual machine, video editor, or other process may explain the pressure. If one process grows continuously, the problem may be an application memory leak rather than an undersized page file. Close unnecessary programs and repeat the workload before making a permanent configuration change.

Open the virtual-memory settings in Windows 10 or 11

The same classic System Properties dialog is used in current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. Follow this path:

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Select Advanced system settings. This opens the System Properties window on the Advanced tab.
  3. Under Performance, select Settings.
  4. In Performance Options, open the Advanced tab.
  5. Under Virtual memory, select Change.

The dialog lists each available drive, the current paging-file allocation, and the checkbox Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Do not change a value until you have recorded which drive contains Windows, how much free space it has, and whether another drive is suitable for a page file.

Recommended setting: let Windows manage the page file

For general use, leave Automatically manage paging file size for all drives selected and select OK through each dialog. Keep a page file on the Windows drive unless you have a documented reason to place it elsewhere. Windows can then grow the file when committed demand increases and shrink it when conditions permit.

Automatic management still requires free disk space. If the Windows volume is nearly full, Windows may be unable to expand the page file, regardless of the checkbox. Remove or move unneeded files, empty the Recycle Bin, or free space on the volume that hosts the page file. Do not treat a full disk as a page-file sizing problem alone.

System-managed sizing is especially appropriate when you need dependable crash dumps, when workloads vary from day to day, or when you do not know the peak committed memory your applications will request. A fixed value can be useful for a narrow troubleshooting case, but it removes some of Windows’ ability to adapt.

When a custom size is justified

Choose a custom size temporarily or deliberately when you repeatedly receive a “paging file too small” message, an allocation error, or evidence that Windows is growing the page file too slowly during a known workload. Clear Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, select the drive you want to configure, choose Custom size, and enter values in megabytes.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses an initial size of about 1.5 times installed RAM when slow page-file growth is causing allocation errors. This is a starting heuristic, not a universal performance formula. Your maximum must account for peak or expected peak commit charge, crash-dump requirements, and free space on the selected drive.

Calculate the initial-size starting point

Use the installed physical RAM, not the amount currently free. Windows’ dialog expects megabytes; using 1 GB as 1,024 MB, the arithmetic examples are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Installed RAM 1.5× starting point Example initial size
4 GB 6 GB 6,144 MB
8 GB 12 GB 12,288 MB
16 GB 24 GB 24,576 MB
32 GB 48 GB 49,152 MB

For example, a computer with 8 GB of installed RAM could use 12,288 MB as a Microsoft-style initial starting point while troubleshooting slow growth. That figure does not tell you the correct maximum, and it does not guarantee better performance. It simply gives Windows a substantial starting reservation so the file is less likely to need repeated expansion during the test.

Choose a maximum that the workload and disk can support

Set the maximum high enough to cover the workload’s expected committed-memory peak, but leave enough free space for Windows, applications, updates, temporary files, and crash-dump activity. A larger maximum can prevent a growth failure only if the drive actually has that space and the workload’s commit demand justifies it. Reserving an enormous value on a nearly full drive creates a different failure risk.

There is no single maximum that is correct for every 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB system. A workstation running several virtual machines may need a different commit limit from a laptop used for web browsing. Check Task Manager while reproducing the problem and compare the highest Committed value with the limit. Use that observation, plus crash-dump needs and available disk space, to choose a defensible maximum.

Apply the custom values

  1. In Virtual memory, clear Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  2. Select the target drive, normally the Windows drive.
  3. Select Custom size.
  4. Enter the calculated initial value in Initial size (MB).
  5. Enter a maximum that fits the expected commit peak and the drive’s free space in Maximum size (MB).
  6. Select Set. Choosing values without selecting Set does not commit the change.
  7. Select OK on each open dialog. Restart Windows if it requests a restart.

After Windows restarts, reopen the dialog to confirm the values or return to Task Manager and observe the committed-memory figures while running the workload that produced the warning.

How to interpret page-file usage and commit figures

A page file showing activity, or even reaching 100 percent of its current allocation, is not automatically a performance fault. The important questions are whether committed usage is approaching the system commit limit and whether active programs are waiting for data to be read from or written to storage. A page file can be busy while the system still has adequate commit headroom, especially during a short burst of background activity.

Conversely, a low page-file percentage does not prove that the system has enough memory. If physical RAM is exhausted and committed allocations are close to the limit, Windows can still report allocation failures. Watch the committed usage and limit together, then correlate them with the process using the memory and with the symptoms you observed.

Troubleshooting common warnings and symptoms

“The paging file is too small” or an allocation error

Confirm that the drive hosting the page file has substantial free space. Then check Task Manager’s committed usage and limit while reproducing the error. If committed demand is close to the limit and the page file is growing slowly, use the custom-size procedure with an initial value around 1.5 times installed RAM and a maximum that the drive can accommodate. Restart if requested and test again.

If the error continues despite adequate commit headroom, look for a process whose memory use keeps increasing, an application-specific memory requirement, malware, or insufficient physical RAM. Increasing the maximum indefinitely can hide the symptom while leaving the underlying cause untouched.

The computer is slow after paging begins

Paging moves data through storage, so latency is expected to rise when active working sets no longer fit comfortably in RAM. Close memory-heavy applications, reduce the number of concurrent workloads, or change the application’s workload. Moving the page file to an SSD can make storage access less slow than a hard disk, but it cannot provide the capacity or throughput of additional RAM.

Windows shows a startup warning after custom sizing

Return to Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change, select Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, confirm the dialogs, and restart if requested. A system-managed page file is the safest recovery when a custom minimum or maximum was too small for the workload or the selected drive.

The page file cannot grow

Check free space on the specific volume selected in the virtual-memory dialog. A full or nearly full drive can block growth even when automatic management is enabled. Also check whether security software, storage errors, or a restricted volume is preventing Windows from writing the file. Do not solve a full-volume problem by assigning a larger maximum than the drive can hold.

Can virtual memory replace adding RAM?

No. Virtual memory extends the amount of memory Windows can commit by using storage as a slower backing store. It does not add physical memory channels, reduce the working set of active programs, or eliminate the performance cost of swapping. If memory pressure is constant, the durable fixes are to run fewer concurrent workloads, replace a leaking or excessively demanding application, or install compatible physical RAM when the computer supports an upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying RAM, verify the computer’s supported DDR generation, module type and form factor, maximum capacity, slot availability, and whether a laptop’s memory is soldered. A module that fits physically may still be incompatible with the system. If the computer cannot be upgraded, reducing concurrent applications and choosing software with lower memory requirements may be more effective than assigning a very large page file.

Page-file placement, crash dumps, and disabling the file

Keep a page file on the Windows volume unless a specific operational design requires another arrangement. Windows may need a page file for crash-dump support, and removing it can produce diagnostic gaps or allocation failures. Multiple drives can be configured, but each additional location must have enough free space and must be appropriate for the intended workload.

Do not disable the page file as a general speed tweak. Disable it only for a documented diagnostic test, and restore a system-managed page file afterward if programs fail to allocate memory, crash dumps are unavailable, or Windows reports startup problems. A page file is not evidence that a computer is defective; it is a normal part of Windows memory management.

A practical decision framework

Situation Recommended action Reason
Normal desktop or laptop use Keep automatic management enabled Windows adapts the page file to changing commit demand and preserves diagnostic support.
Uncertain or highly variable workloads Keep automatic management enabled and maintain free disk space A fixed value may be too small when an unusual workload peaks.
Repeated allocation errors or “paging file too small” warnings Measure committed usage, check free space, then test a custom size A larger commit limit may prevent growth failures when demand genuinely exceeds the current limit.
Constant high memory use and sluggish paging Reduce concurrent workloads, investigate leaks, or add compatible RAM A page file is slower than RAM and does not solve sustained physical-memory pressure.
Slow paging on a hard disk Consider an SSD for lower storage latency, while treating RAM separately An SSD can make paging less slow but does not increase physical-memory capacity.
Startup warning or instability after custom values Revert to system-managed sizing Automatic sizing is the safest baseline when a fixed range is unsuitable.

Verify the result after changing settings

  1. Restart Windows if the dialog requested it.
  2. Open Task Manager and record Memory usage and Committed usage versus the limit.
  3. Run the application or workload that produced the original warning.
  4. Watch for a repeat of the allocation error, unusually heavy disk activity, or a process whose memory use continues to climb.
  5. If the warning is gone but the computer remains slow, address the physical-memory workload rather than enlarging the page file again.
  6. If custom sizing causes warnings or instability, restore Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.

The useful outcome is not a particular page-file percentage. It is a system that has enough commit headroom for its real workload, sufficient free space for Windows to operate, and enough physical RAM that normal activity does not depend constantly on slow storage.
