Run FFmpeg as a foreground systemd service, then set Restart=on-failure to relaunch it after errors or Restart=always if even a clean exit should start it again. Add a retry delay, enable the service at boot, and verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room: systemd can restart an encoder process, but it cannot guarantee a healthy stream.

Configure the encoder as a systemd service

The unit below is an illustrative template, not a tested configuration. Replace the user, paths, input file, and destination with values for your host. Keep the stream key secret. The FFmpeg encoding values are examples, not universal settings.

# /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live stream encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/loop.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Type=simple keeps FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process, so systemd can supervise its lifetime. Do not background the encoder with & or use a wrapper that exits while FFmpeg keeps running; systemd may then track the wrong process.

The command assumes a local video file looped indefinitely. It does not establish compatibility with a particular Linux distribution, installed FFmpeg build, stream key format, or ingest endpoint. Use the URL and key provided in YouTube Live Control Room and test the full configuration.

Choose restart behavior deliberately

Use Restart=on-failure when a clean exit should stay stopped

This is the safer default for a stream that should not spawn a new encoder after FFmpeg exits successfully. systemd restarts the service after a failure, such as a non-zero exit, abnormal signal termination, or timeout.

Use Restart=always when every exit should relaunch the encoder

With always, systemd restarts after clean exits as well as failures. Choose it only if a successful FFmpeg exit should also begin another streaming process. A manager-requested stop, such as systemctl stop, is intentional and does not trigger an automatic restart under these policies. See the systemd.service documentation for the behavior applicable to the installed version.

Set a retry delay and account for rate limits

RestartSec=10s waits ten seconds before an automatic restart in this example. It is a chosen value, not a universal recommendation. A delay helps avoid an immediate retry loop; the right interval depends on how quickly the input, network, or destination can recover.

Repeated fast failures can also hit systemd start-rate limits, after which the manager may stop scheduling attempts until the limit window permits recovery or an operator intervenes. The systemd configuration reference reports manager defaults of a ten-second interval and five attempts, but those settings are configurable and per-unit values may differ. Check man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on the target host rather than assuming a default or directive is identical across releases. See the systemd.unit documentation and systemd-system.conf reference.

Load, enable, and inspect the service

  1. Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service, then reload systemd’s unit definitions:

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
  2. Enable the service to start with its configured boot target and start it immediately:

    sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
  3. Check the service state and recent logs:

    sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
    sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f
  4. After changing the unit, run daemon-reload again. Restart the service to apply the change with sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service; then inspect status and logs.

  5. Confirm preview and stream health separately in YouTube Live Control Room. An active systemd service only shows that systemd considers the process active; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Check the parts systemd cannot repair

Use the current endpoint and protect the key

YouTube describes stream keys as credentials for sending an encoder feed: “Stream keys are like your stream’s password and address.” Get the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If a key is exposed, reset it there and update the service configuration. Avoid sharing unit files or logs that contain the key. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Prefer RTMPS when supported

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingest. Use the RTMPS URL shown for your stream in Live Control Room; a generic example URL is not a substitute for the account’s current endpoint. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match bitrate to the video and the available upload

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain the bitrate. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom; its streaming tips also say to account for the primary and backup stream where applicable. Measure the host’s upload capacity under realistic conditions and monitor stream health. See encoder settings and bitrates and YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Make sure the input and encoder can recover

systemd can restart an encoder that exits, but a restart will not fix a missing or unreadable media file, a bad key, an unreachable network, or incompatible FFmpeg options. Nor will it necessarily detect an encoder that remains running but has stopped producing usable output. Check the journal for process errors and verify the feed in YouTube; detecting hangs may require a separate health check that can report a failure.

Troubleshoot common restart and stream failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The service fails immediately Wrong FFmpeg path, missing input file, invalid options, permissions, or a bad endpoint. Read journalctl -u youtube-stream.service; confirm /usr/bin/ffmpeg exists, the service user can read the file, and the URL and key are current.
FFmpeg exits cleanly and does not relaunch Restart=on-failure does not restart after a successful exit. If every exit should relaunch the stream, change to Restart=always, reload systemd, and restart the unit.
The service is active, but YouTube has no healthy feed The process may be running while ingest, credentials, input, or output is failing. Inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube Live Control Room; verify the key, endpoint, media playback, and encoder output.
Restarts stop after repeated failures systemd start-rate limiting may have been reached. Inspect service status and logs, fix the underlying failure first, then start the service again if needed. Check the installed systemd manuals for applicable rate settings.
The stream drops despite automatic restart Network interruption, insufficient upload capacity, destination issues, or encoder/input failure. Check connectivity, available upload headroom, stream health, and logs. Restart supervision does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
Editing the unit has no effect systemd has not reloaded the modified unit, or the service was not restarted. Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Sources and scope

The unit is illustrative and has not been tested against a particular distribution, FFmpeg build, or stream. YouTube’s bitrate figures above are published H.264 recommendations; the 20% headroom figure is YouTube guidance. systemd behavior and defaults depend on the installed release and configuration, so check the host’s local manuals and test the complete stream before relying on it.
