Stream Train does not have confirmed native controller support at launch. Its developer said on October 14, 2026, “No, we haven’t focused on controller support, but we aim to add it after launch.” You can still play with a gamepad by using Steam Input’s legacy mode to translate controller inputs into the keyboard and mouse commands that Stream Train already understands. The layout must be configured and tested by you; no verified official Stream Train profile has been published.

What controller support means in Stream Train right now

Stream Train launched on Steam on October 16, 2026, as a first-person cooperative horror adventure for up to six players. Runs include train operation, procedural environments, livestream-related mechanics and physics-driven interactions. Those systems create more than a simple movement-and-camera control problem: you also need reliable bindings for interaction, menus, inventory, camera or stream actions and train controls.

The launch FAQ from developer Half Past Yellow is the clearest statement of the current limitation: “No, we haven’t focused on controller support, but we aim to add it after launch.” The available launch information does not confirm that native gamepad actions or an official Steam Input profile were added after that statement. Therefore, treat Steam Input as a compatibility layer rather than as proof of native support.

  • Native support: The game exposes controller actions directly, normally through its own input system or the Steam Input API.
  • Legacy Steam Input: Steam converts a controller’s buttons, sticks and triggers into keyboard and mouse events. This is the practical option for a game that was designed around keyboard and mouse input.
  • Your layout: You choose which physical controller input sends each keyboard key or mouse action, then verify the result inside Stream Train.

What you need before opening the editor

Use a controller Steam recognizes

Steam lists the Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense and Nintendo Switch Pro as supported Big Picture devices. A third-party controller may also work, but Steam does not give it the same official device-support status. Connect the controller before opening Stream Train’s configuration editor; Steam notes that the editor may not appear until a controller is detected.

For the least complicated first attempt, use one controller that Steam identifies by name in its controller settings. If you are using a third-party device, confirm that its buttons and sticks respond in Steam before troubleshooting Stream Train.

Record Stream Train’s keyboard and mouse commands

Exact default keyboard bindings and a verified Stream Train controller layout have not been published in the available launch materials. Open the game’s control settings and write down the command for every action you intend to map. If a command is not shown in the game, test it with the keyboard and mouse before assigning it to a controller input.

At minimum, identify the commands for:

  • Movement and sprint, if the game exposes a separate sprint command.
  • Camera movement and any mouse-button actions used while looking around.
  • Interaction or use.
  • Jump and crouch, if those actions are available in your current game build.
  • Inventory and other frequently used menus.
  • Camera or livestream actions.
  • Every train-operation control you expect to use during a run.

Do not assume that a familiar key from another game has the same function here. Steam Input can only send the command you assign; it cannot discover an undocumented Stream Train action for you.

Open Stream Train’s Steam Input configuration

  1. Plug in the controller and wait for Steam to identify it.
  2. Open your Steam Library and select Stream Train.
  3. Desktop client: right-click Stream Train and choose the controller-configuration editor.
  4. Big Picture: open Stream Train’s menu, choose Manage Game, then choose Controller Configuration.
  5. If the configuration option is missing, return to Steam’s controller settings, confirm that the device is enabled and connected, and reopen the game’s Library menu.

The editor is configured per game. Changes made for another title do not automatically become Stream Train bindings, so check that the title shown in the editor is Stream Train before you begin.

Choose legacy mode for a non-native layout

Steam describes legacy mode as a compatibility mapper for games that do not use the Steam Input API. Because Stream Train’s launch information does not establish that it implements that API, start with a legacy or template layout instead of assuming that native action sets will be available.

In legacy mode, each controller input produces a keyboard, mouse or gamepad event selected in the editor. For Stream Train, keyboard-and-mouse emulation is the important path: map the left stick to the game’s movement keys, the right stick to mouse movement and individual buttons to the keyboard commands you verified in the control settings.

Build a practical Stream Train layout

Map movement and camera first

Assign the left stick to the movement keys used by Stream Train. Assign the right stick to mouse movement for camera control. Test both axes independently before adding other actions. If the character drifts when the stick is released, increase the dead zone slightly; if small stick movements do nothing, reduce it. Make one change at a time so you can identify which setting caused a problem.

Legacy mouse emulation can feel different from a native right stick. Adjust sensitivity and response in Steam Input and then in Stream Train’s own mouse or camera settings, if those settings exist. Do not compensate by adding several simultaneous mouse outputs to the same stick: that can make the camera unpredictable.

Place high-frequency actions on reachable buttons

Bind interaction or use to a face button that you can press while moving. Put jump and crouch on separate buttons if both commands exist. Assign inventory and other menus to buttons that are easy to reach but unlikely to be pressed accidentally during train operation.

Each binding should send the exact keyboard key that Stream Train uses. If the game requires a held key rather than a tap, choose a press behavior that holds the output while the controller button is held. If the command is a toggle, use a normal press and test that a second press reverses it.

Add camera, livestream and train controls only after confirming their keys

Stream Train includes livestream mechanics and train controls, but the available launch information does not publish their keyboard assignments. Test each command with the keyboard first, then assign it to a controller button, trigger or directional-pad input. Keep train controls grouped in a predictable area of the layout so you can find them under pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a control requires several keys in sequence, create a multi-action binding only after a single-key binding works. A multi-action command can introduce timing or release problems, so verify the sequence in a safe part of a run before relying on it during cooperative play.

Use layers sparingly

Steam Input can use layers or mode shifts to give one physical control different outputs in different contexts. For example, a temporary layer could provide extra train controls while you are operating the train. Layers are optional; a simple one-to-one layout is easier to diagnose and less likely to leave a shifted control active after you return to exploration.

If you use a layer, assign a clear activation button, provide a visible indicator in the layout editor and test both entering and leaving the layer. Never make a critical action available only through a layer until you have confirmed that the layer reliably deactivates.

Save the layout and verify it in Stream Train

  1. Save or apply the layout in Steam Input.
  2. Launch Stream Train from the same Steam installation where you edited the configuration.
  3. At the main menu, test navigation, selection and back or cancel commands.
  4. Start a low-risk session and test movement, stopping, camera control and interaction.
  5. Test jump, crouch, inventory and any other frequently used actions you mapped.
  6. Test camera or livestream actions without assuming that a visually similar icon represents the same command.
  7. Enter a train and check every train-operation binding individually.
  8. Ask a cooperative partner to confirm that your actions are visible and that you can still communicate and navigate menus.

This verification is essential because no tested Stream Train controller profile was identified in the available sources. A layout that saves successfully in Steam is not automatically a layout that Stream Train interprets correctly.

Prevent mixed-input problems

Do not send gamepad output and keyboard or mouse output for the same action at the same time. Steam warns that games expecting one input type at a time can glitch when they receive mixed signals. In a legacy layout, choose the keyboard-and-mouse event that Stream Train already recognizes rather than adding a second gamepad event as a backup.

Mixed configurations can also produce misleading on-screen glyphs. Stream Train may display keyboard or mouse prompts while you are holding a controller, or it may switch prompts when another input is detected. Judge a binding by whether the action works, not by the icon alone. If prompts change constantly, remove duplicate outputs and retest with only one input method active.

Steam Input modes and hardware choices

Choice What it does How it applies to Stream Train
Native Steam Input action layout Uses actions exposed by a game that implements the Steam Input API. Stream Train’s launch information does not establish that this mode is available, so do not depend on it.
Legacy keyboard-and-mouse layout Converts controller inputs into keyboard keys and mouse events. Recommended starting point because Stream Train’s launch support was not focused on controllers.
Officially supported Steam device Steam lists the device as supported in Big Picture. Use a Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controller, DualShock 4, DualSense or Nintendo Switch Pro when possible.
Third-party controller May be detected and usable without the same official support listing. Confirm detection and button response in Steam before creating the layout.

The hardware choice does not change Stream Train’s launch-state software limitation. A supported controller gives Steam a better chance to recognize the device; it does not create native Stream Train actions or guarantee a ready-made profile.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The controller editor does not appear

  • Connect the controller before opening the Stream Train Library menu.
  • Check that Steam lists the device in its controller settings.
  • Close and reopen Stream Train’s Library entry after Steam detects the device.
  • Use the Big Picture path: Manage Game followed by Controller Configuration.

If the editor remains unavailable, the issue is Steam’s device detection or client state rather than an unresponsive Stream Train binding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buttons work in Steam but not in the game

Confirm that the layout sends the keyboard or mouse command Stream Train actually uses. Then check that the edited layout is saved for Stream Train and that Steam Input is active when the game launches. Test one simple command, such as movement or interaction, before rebuilding the entire layout.

The character moves, but the camera does not

Movement and camera are separate outputs. Verify that the right stick is assigned to mouse movement rather than to a second set of movement keys or a gamepad-right-stick event. Adjust dead zone and sensitivity gradually, and test the result in an actual session.

Actions trigger twice or behave erratically

Look for duplicate bindings, layers that are still active and simultaneous gamepad plus keyboard or mouse outputs. Remove all but one output for the affected action, save the layout and test again. If the problem disappears, add other bindings back one at a time.

The game shows the wrong button prompts

Legacy mode may produce keyboard or mouse glyphs even when a controller is being used. This is a known consequence of emulation. If the action itself works, the prompt mismatch is cosmetic; if the action does not work, remove mixed outputs and verify the underlying keyboard command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Train controls are missing

Return to Stream Train’s control settings and identify the exact keyboard command for each train function. Map and test those commands individually. Do not infer them from another control or assume that a single “drive” binding covers every train operation.

What to expect from future controller support

Half Past Yellow’s October 14, 2026 launch FAQ says the team aimed to add controller support after launch, but it gives no confirmed delivery date. Until an official update documents native actions or a verified profile, continue treating legacy Steam Input as a user-created workaround. Recheck the game’s announcements and control settings after updates: a future native implementation could change which layout type is appropriate, but an update should be verified in-game rather than assumed from a new menu label.
