To capture a page after it reaches Playwright’s networkidle state, navigate with the Playwright MCP server, explicitly wait with page.waitForLoadState('networkidle') through browser_run_code_unsafe, and then call browser_take_screenshot. The wait and screenshot are separate actions; the documented server configuration has no setting that automatically waits for network idle before taking a screenshot.
Set up the Playwright MCP server
You need Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client. The official Playwright guide provides setup instructions for clients including VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop; where you put the server entry depends on the client you use. For a full-page image, set fullPage: true and a filename such as page.png. To capture only the current viewport, omit both fullPage and target. The key is the ordering: the explicit wait must finish before you request the screenshot.

Understand what network idle does—and does not—guarantee
Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 milliseconds. Its API documentation explicitly discourages using that state as a testing readiness signal, advising users to rely on web assertions instead: Playwright Page API reference.
Network inactivity is a heuristic, not proof that every visual change is finished. Pages with polling or persistent requests may never reach the state, and a page can update after the 500-millisecond quiet period. If a particular element, response, or application state indicates readiness more reliably, wait for that condition instead. The MCP tool browser_wait_for can wait for text to appear or disappear, or for a delay of up to 30 seconds, but it does not accept a network load-state parameter.

The MCP documentation notes that most actions wait for triggered navigations and network activity to settle before returning. That behavior is distinct from explicitly calling page.waitForLoadState('networkidle') when you need that particular Playwright state.
Use code execution with care
browser_run_code_unsafe runs an arbitrary JavaScript function in the Playwright server process. The Playwright MCP documentation treats this capability as equivalent to remote code execution. Troubleshoot waits and captures
- The wait never returns: the page may keep connections open or make recurring requests. Use a page-specific readiness condition, such as waiting for a meaningful element or response, rather than relying on network inactivity.
- The screenshot is still visually incomplete: network idle does not establish that application rendering or later updates have finished. Identify the page-specific signal that means the content you need is ready, wait for it, then capture.
- You need one component, not the whole page: set
targetto an element reference or selector. Do not also setfullPage. - The saved file is not where expected: relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. Use an appropriate path or check the tool response for the output location when no filename was specified.
- The MCP tools are unavailable: check that the client has the Playwright server entry in its own configuration, that Node.js 20 or newer is available, and that the client has reloaded the configuration.
