To loop a video through OBS on a Mac at 4K and 60 fps, add it as a looping Media Source, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, choose a supported encoder and YouTube’s matching bitrate, then connect with your YouTube stream key and test the full workload. Whether this will run reliably depends on your Mac, source, scene, and sustained upload—not merely on matching the settings.
Before you configure OBS
This setup is for a prerecorded local video played repeatedly in OBS and sent to YouTube Live. A desktop capture or external camera uses different sources and permissions; an external camera or console may also need a compatible capture path or capture card. A capture card is not needed for a local media file.
- Check macOS and OBS: OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 or later as basic macOS requirements. That baseline does not guarantee a particular Mac can stream 4K60. OBS notes that encoding load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements.
- Check the source: use a 4K source if you need native 4K detail. Setting a smaller video to a 4K output enlarges it; it does not add detail.
- Check upload capacity: the connection must sustain the selected bitrate, with headroom for normal network variation. A speed test is useful but does not prove that a long, uninterrupted stream will be stable.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but validate the actual source and scene you plan to broadcast.
Configure OBS for a looping video
1. Add and loop the media file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option in its properties so playback starts again when it reaches the end. OBS controls may vary by version; confirm the video returns to its beginning during a test.
- Size and position the source in the canvas. Check the whole frame, including any letterboxing or cropping, in the OBS preview.
If you are capturing the desktop, window, or an app instead, add the appropriate capture source and grant Screen Recording access in macOS. For webcam or capture-card input, grant Camera access as needed; for microphone input, grant Microphone access.

2. Choose an encoder
- Open Settings → Output. If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced to expose streaming encoder options.
- On Apple Silicon, OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264. On Intel Macs, OBS says to use x264 for streaming: VideoToolbox lacks the constant-bitrate support typically required by streaming services. OBS hardware encoding.
- Do not assume an encoder or Mac can sustain 4K60 simply because the option appears in OBS. Check the test stream for rendering or encoding overload.
3. Set canvas, output, and frame rate
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60.
These settings request 2160p60 output; they do not guarantee that the source, scene, and Mac can render or encode it consistently.
4. Set streaming output and audio
In Settings → Output → Streaming, use CBR rate control. Choose the bitrate based on the codec and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these figures for 2160p; the recommended rate is the target, while the minimum is not a promise of the same quality:

| 2160p mode | Codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 30 fps | H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest targets, not a claim that every OBS/macOS encoder combination supports every listed codec. OBS’s cited documentation establishes H.264 VideoToolbox streaming support on Apple Silicon and recommends x264 on Intel Macs for typical constant-bitrate services.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC is appropriate for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- Color: for SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; its low-latency optimization option is not available for 4K. Follow the current YouTube live encoder settings if its guidance changes.

- Confirm the source loops and that playback does not stop at the end.
- Check the YouTube preview for the intended resolution, frame rate, and audio.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload and YouTube for stream-health warnings.
- Compare the required bitrate with upload capacity available throughout the broadcast, not only at the beginning.
If 4K60 is unstable, reduce the output to 30 fps or lower the output resolution, then test again. A lower frame rate may suit content with limited motion; 60 fps can better preserve fast motion when the source and system sustain it. Choose based on source detail, motion, upload headroom, and reliability needs rather than assuming 4K60 is always the best setting.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding overload or uneven output | The resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene, sources, or filters exceed available resources. | Reduce output to 30 fps or a lower resolution. Simplify the scene, remove costly filters, and close unnecessary apps after checking Activity Monitor. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains workload factors. |
| Dropped frames or YouTube stream-health warnings | The sustained upload path may not support the selected bitrate reliably. | Check upload performance, use a stable connection, and lower the bitrate or output demands if needed. Retest under the actual streaming setup. |
| Black or missing desktop capture | OBS may not have Screen Recording permission. | Review permissions through OBS Studio → Review App Permissions, grant Screen Recording, and restart or reselect the source if macOS prompts you to. |
| No camera or microphone input | The relevant macOS permission is missing, or the capture path/device is unavailable. | Review Camera or Microphone access as applicable and check that the intended device is selected and connected. |
| Video plays once and stops | The Media Source loop option is not enabled. | Open the Media Source properties, enable looping, and verify the end-to-start transition in a test. |
| OBS connects but YouTube does not receive the intended stream | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, or a different broadcast is open in Studio. | Confirm the active YouTube broadcast, copy its current server URL and key again, and check the OBS Stream settings. Keep the key private. |
When a cloud loop is a better fit
OBS keeps the loop dependent on the Mac, its power, network connection, and software session. If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that remains live without a computer running at home, a cloud service is a different workflow. StreamNeo is #1 to consider for that use: it runs an always-on YouTube stream from the cloud, plays uploaded videos at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
