For a cautious starting setup, stream at 720p and 30 fps, set OBS’s video bitrate below the upload speed your 4G connection can sustain, and use a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30, but that is a platform recommendation—not proof that your mobile connection can hold it continuously. Test the actual setup before an important broadcast; no OBS setting can guarantee uninterrupted 4G service.
Configure OBS and YouTube for a 4G stream
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a starting point, then adjust to the stable upload capacity at the place and time you plan to stream. Official OBS and YouTube guidance is not specific to India, and a single speed test cannot establish sustained mobile upload performance.
- Create the YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the event and obtain its stream connection details. In OBS, select YouTube as the service and either connect your account or enter the event’s stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Start conservatively. In OBS, set the video to 1280×720 at 30 fps. This is a practical starting point for a variable connection, not a guarantee that 4G will support a live stream without interruption.
- Set the video bitrate with headroom. In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the streaming video bitrate. YouTube recommends H.264 bitrates of 4 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. OBS Project’s connection-troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting point: use sustained, representative upload performance rather than the best moment in a speed test, and leave capacity for other devices and traffic sharing the connection.
- Set the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose an encoder your computer can handle. Select an encoder supported by your hardware or OBS installation, then check that OBS is not reporting rendering or encoding overload. There is no universal encoder preset established for every computer.
- Test the complete route. Before the real broadcast, make a private or otherwise suitable test with motion and audio similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame count. A test is useful only if it reflects the content and conditions you expect to stream.
If your sustained upload cannot support the chosen bitrate, reduce the bitrate and retest. If needed, lower resolution or frame rate as well. The useful configuration is the one your connection and computer can sustain—not the highest setting listed by YouTube.
Choose settings according to connection and computer limits
| Choice | What it changes | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 versus 1080p30 | Resolution and bitrate demand | Start at 720p30. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 4 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30; these figures do not establish what your 4G link can sustain. |
| Fixed bitrate versus dynamic bitrate | With a fixed bitrate, OBS continues targeting the configured rate. OBS’s “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” option lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. | Try a lower fixed bitrate first. Dynamic bitrate can help manage congestion, but OBS cautions that quality falls and the underlying network problem remains. |
| Mobile hotspot or tethering versus a 4G router | The local connection between the computer and mobile network | Use the arrangement that gives your computer a stable local link and the best tested mobile signal. A router can change that local arrangement; it cannot create tower capacity or prevent carrier outages. |
Network capacity is only one limit. If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload rather than network-dropped frames, the computer may not be keeping up with the selected workload. Reduce the video workload and test again; changing mobile carriers alone will not resolve a computer-side bottleneck.

Test the 4G connection where you will stream
- Test at the intended location and, as far as practical, at the time of day you expect to go live. A mobile connection can vary; one speed-test result is not evidence of continuous upload capacity.
- Use a private or otherwise suitable YouTube test event, and keep the stream key private.
- Send representative motion and audio. A mostly static test may not reflect a stream with more movement or a different encoding load.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame count throughout the test, not just at startup.
- Keep competing uploads and downloads off the connection where practical. If conditions change, test again rather than assuming the earlier result still applies.
- If you can test more than one available carrier at your location, compare those results. TRAI’s Quality of Service material does not establish a dependable upload rate for a particular address or identify a nationwide best carrier.
Troubleshoot OBS dropping frames or disconnecting
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows rising network-dropped frames | The connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. | Lower the video bitrate and test again. Reduce resolution or frame rate if necessary. OBS identifies network-dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or insufficient for the configured bitrate. |
| The stream disconnects or YouTube reports poor stream health | The mobile link, shared traffic, or route to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable. | Stop competing traffic, repeat a representative test, and compare the connection under different local conditions. Do not assume OBS itself is the cause. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload | The computer may be unable to render or encode the selected settings in real time. | Lower the resolution or frame rate, use an encoder the computer supports, and test again while checking OBS status. |
| Network drops continue despite a lower bitrate | The issue may be the mobile signal, congestion, carrier route, or another unstable part of the connection. | Retest at the stream location, remove competing traffic, and compare available carriers if practical. A router can alter the local setup but cannot fix carrier-side limitations. |
OBS also documents Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) as a fallback. It can lower bitrate instead of dropping frames when the connection cannot keep up, but the resulting quality may decrease and the setting does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Plan for power, data, and YouTube rules
OBS runs on your computer, so a continuous broadcast depends on both the computer and the mobile connection remaining available. A UPS may help keep local computer and networking equipment powered through a local power interruption, but it cannot preserve a cellular connection during a carrier outage. Likewise, a 4G router with Ethernet may provide a convenient dedicated local connection, but it does not guarantee better tower coverage or stable upload.
