For an HTTP(S) radio stream, put FFmpeg’s reconnect options before the input URL. A practical starting point is to retry disconnects and end-of-file events, then add bounded handling for network failures and selected HTTP errors. These HTTP protocol options are not a universal fix for RTSP, RTP, SRT, or other transports.
Start with this HTTP(S) command
Replace the example URL with the station’s direct HTTP(S) stream URL. This command copies the incoming audio into an MP3-named output; it does not encode it as MP3, so the output container or extension must suit the incoming audio format.

-c copy output.mp3The retry count and delay cap shown are example policy choices, not values guaranteed to work for every station. Adjust them to the interruption you can tolerate and the source’s behavior.
What each reconnect option does

FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation says respect_retry_after is enabled by default. When enabled, FFmpeg honors a server’s Retry-After delay rather than using exponential backoff; the documentation highlights this as useful for responses such as 429 and 503.

Apply the options to the right input
- Confirm the protocol. Check the station’s stream URL and service documentation. Use this recipe only when the input is HTTP(S) and handled by FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol.
- Place input options before
-i. FFmpeg options are scoped by their position. Put the HTTP reconnect options before the URL they configure. For a command with multiple inputs, place each set before its intended input. - Begin with the core flags. Try
-reconnect 1,-reconnect_streamed 1, and-reconnect_at_eof 1. Add network-error or HTTP-status handling only when it matches the observed failure. - Set deliberate bounds. Choose a maximum retry count and delay appropriate to the job. Avoid an unbounded retry plan for a process that needs to terminate or be supervised.
- Check the installed binary. Option names, values, and defaults can vary across FFmpeg releases. Run
ffmpeg -h protocol=httpto see what your installation recognizes, and review its logs while testing.
Troubleshoot by identifying the failure
Observe FFmpeg during an interruption and distinguish an EOF, a TCP/TLS connection failure, an HTTP response, an authentication problem, or a protocol mismatch. Reconnect settings can retry recoverable events; they cannot repair a permanently invalid URL or credentials.
- FFmpeg exits when the stream closes: If the input is HTTP(S) and the log indicates EOF, include
-reconnect_at_eof 1. For streamed or non-seekable audio, also include-reconnect_streamed 1. - The connection cannot be established: For TCP/TLS connection errors, try
-reconnect_on_network_error 1. Check that the URL and network are valid; retries will not correct a persistent connection or authentication issue. - The server returns an HTTP error: Use
-reconnect_on_http_errorwith only the status codes or classes likely to be temporary for that station. Broadly retrying client errors such as 4xx can repeatedly request a URL that is invalid or unauthorized. - Retries continue too long or stop too soon: Tune
-reconnect_max_retries,-reconnect_delay_max, and, if appropriate,-reconnect_delay_total_max. The example values above are not station-specific guarantees. - The source is not HTTP(S): Do not assume these HTTP options apply to RTSP, RTP, SRT, or another protocol. Find the relevant protocol’s behavior and options instead.
ICY station and track metadata is separate
Reconnect behavior does not itself expose station titles or track names to an application. FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation says icy=1 requests ICY metadata by default when supported. An application that needs to use it must read icy_metadata_headers and icy_metadata_packet.
