To stream a continuous Hindi podcast from a Linux VPS, run Icecast as the server and use FFmpeg as its source client: FFmpeg encodes audio and sends it to an Icecast mountpoint, and listeners connect to that mountpoint. The services can run on the same VPS. The settings below are a starting template—not a tested command or a Hindi-specific preset—so verify the installed FFmpeg build, server configuration, and listener compatibility before relying on it.
Understand the two parts of the stream
FFmpeg and Icecast have different jobs. FFmpeg reads audio, optionally encodes it, and connects to Icecast as a source. Icecast accepts that source and distributes it to listeners at a mountpoint. The source client and server may share a VPS, although Icecast describes them as commonly separate components. This is a continuous live-style stream, not a downloadable podcast episode or an RSS feed.
- FFmpeg: source client and audio encoder.
- Icecast: streaming server that hosts the mountpoint and serves listeners.
- Listeners: connect to the public URL for the Icecast server and mountpoint.
Icecast documentation and the FFmpeg protocol documentation describe the respective server setup and Icecast output URL.
Install and configure Icecast on the VPS
Install Icecast using your Linux distribution’s package when available. The configuration file location and service startup method vary by distribution and package; use that package’s instructions rather than assuming a universal path.

Set the server basics
In the Icecast configuration, set the public hostname or address, a non-default source password, a separate admin password, and the listening address and port. Check the client limit and log directory as well. These settings determine where FFmpeg can connect, who can publish, and where you can look for startup or connection errors. Icecast’s basic setup guide covers these configuration items.
Keep the source password private. Do not put a real credential in a published command, shared shell history, exposed process listing, or logs. For production, pass secrets using an appropriately protected secret-injection method. The generic command shown in Icecast’s guide is icecast -c /path/to/icecast.xml; package-managed deployments may instead use a distribution-specific service command.

Choose a mountpoint
Use a short mountpoint without spaces or unusual characters. Icecast recommends an .ogg suffix for Ogg Vorbis mountpoints; MP3 mountpoints usually omit the extension. The listener URL is the server address, port, and mountpoint combined, for example http://stream.example.com:8000/hindi if those are the values you configured.
Choose an audio format and configure FFmpeg
There is no Hindi-specific codec, language flag, or universally ideal bitrate established by the cited technical documentation. Choose an output format that the intended listener apps support and that fits your bandwidth. MP3 is a reasonable example for broad compatibility, but it is not a requirement for Hindi speech.

Check the installed FFmpeg build
Before configuring the output, check the version and available encoders on the VPS:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encodersThe online FFmpeg documentation is rolling documentation and may differ from an older distribution binary. Use documentation for the installed release where possible. An encoder such as libmp3lame is available only if the FFmpeg build includes it; FFmpeg documents that external encoders depend on build configuration.

Send a file to Icecast as an MP3 source
This illustrative command reads an audio file at its native rate for live-style streaming, maps the first audio stream, disables video, encodes MP3 at 128 kbit/s, sets a 44.1 kHz sample rate and two channels, and explicitly declares the content type:

Confirm that the input exists, the installed build has the selected encoder, and the Icecast server accepts the chosen format. If a file contains more than one audio stream, use -map to select the intended one explicitly. For speech-only audio, mono can reduce bandwidth; choose channels and bitrate based on listening quality and network capacity rather than treating the sample values as a universal recommendation. The -re option is useful when reading a file at its native rate for live-style streaming; it is generally not needed for a real-time input.
Adapt the source for a live microphone or mixer
For a live microphone or mixer feed, replace -i input_audio.wav with the appropriate Linux capture input and device. The device name and capture syntax depend on the hardware and audio system on your VPS; the exact device cannot be selected without knowing that setup. Confirm that FFmpeg can see the capture device before sending its output to Icecast.
Secure network access and keep credentials safe
Allow the configured listener port through both the VPS firewall and any provider-level network firewall. If you want an HTTPS Icecast endpoint, FFmpeg documents a TLS option for its Icecast connection. Confirm that the FFmpeg build has the necessary network and TLS support and that the endpoint and certificate are configured correctly; changing the port alone does not enable TLS.
For a public stream, consider TLS termination, access policy, abuse controls, and monitoring. The right deployment choices depend on the VPS distribution and provider, so there is no single firewall command or port rule that applies to every setup.

- Check Icecast startup: inspect the configured log directory for startup messages and errors.
- Check server and source status: open the Icecast admin stats page, commonly
/admin/stats.xslon the configured host and port, and confirm the server and source connection appear. - Test from outside the VPS: open the public mountpoint URL in an audio player on another network or device. A localhost-only test does not confirm that firewall and public routing are correct.
- Check the listener URL: use the configured server address, port, and mountpoint. Icecast also documents an
.m3uplaylist form if you want to provide a playlist link.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
- FFmpeg reports an encoder error: confirm the selected encoder appears in
ffmpeg -encoders, and checkffmpeg -versionagainst the documentation for that installed build. - Icecast rejects the source: check the host, port, mountpoint, source username and password, and whether Icecast is configured to accept the chosen stream format. Avoid exposing the real password while debugging.
- The stream appears in stats but listeners cannot connect: test the public URL from another network and check both the VPS firewall and provider firewall, as well as the hostname, port, and mountpoint.
- The stream is silent or contains the wrong audio: confirm the input path or capture device and use
-mapto select the intended audio stream. - The listener cannot play the output: verify the output codec and content type against the capabilities of the listener app and the Icecast configuration. The command explicitly sets
audio/mpegfor its MP3 example; a different format may need a different content type.
