You generally do not send AWS Elemental MediaPackage output directly to YouTube Live. In the documented AWS workflow, MediaPackage packages an incoming live stream and serves playback to viewers; YouTube HLS ingestion requires an encoder to upload playlists and media segments to YouTube. For an AWS-managed encode-and-send workflow, configure AWS Elemental MediaLive to send an HLS output to YouTube. Use MediaPackage separately if you also need an AWS playback origin for viewers or another downstream client.
Understand which AWS service sends the stream
The key distinction is stream direction. MediaPackage receives an upstream live input and produces a playback presentation. A player or other downstream client requests that presentation over HTTPS. YouTube HLS ingestion works the other way: an encoder uploads live playlists and segments to a YouTube-provided HTTPS endpoint.
- MediaLive: an AWS-managed encoder that can create an HLS output for YouTube ingestion.
- MediaPackage: an origin and packager for downstream playback, not the documented direct YouTube ingest destination in this workflow.
AWS describes the MediaPackage v2 live processing flow at General AWS Elemental MediaPackage live processing flow. AWS documents a MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS workflow in its 2021-04-14 guide to streaming 4K HDR live video to YouTube using HLS ingest.
Configure MediaLive to send HLS to YouTube
The steps below describe the architecture and settings to configure, not a guarantee that every AWS console label is unchanged. The AWS console example is from 2021; use the current YouTube Live Control Room URL and verify the current MediaLive interface as you configure the channel.

- Create or select a YouTube stream configured for HLS. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key and choose HLS as the stream protocol. Copy the generated Stream URL and, if you configure redundant ingest, the Backup server URL. YouTube notes that the HLS Stream URL can update, so use the URL shown for the selected setup rather than relying on a static example. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. For HDR, leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked.
- Set up the MediaLive input and channel. Configure the live input that receives your program and create or edit a MediaLive channel to process it. The input and encoding settings must suit your source and the YouTube output profile you intend to send.
- Add an HLS output group for YouTube. In the MediaLive channel, add an HLS output group and enter the current YouTube HLS destination URL from Live Control Room. Select the HLS basic PUT setting in the CDN settings. The AWS published example uses a two-second segment setting; YouTube permits HLS segments from one to four seconds.
- Configure video and audio for the selected YouTube HLS profile. YouTube’s developer guidance specifies muxed M2TS video and audio, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the output to your source and the target profile. YouTube’s consumer HLS setup help also lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio support; do not assume every listed audio format is supported by every encoder or target profile. Consult YouTube’s HLS delivery guide alongside the current setup page.
- Start the channel and validate the YouTube ingest. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream status. A successful AWS channel start alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a valid HLS stream.
Preserve YouTube’s HLS ingest constraints
Use the selected stream’s current YouTube settings as the authority for its endpoint and profile. The published HLS requirements include these constraints:
- HLS segment duration must be between 1 and 4 seconds.
- Use TS segments and rolling playlists with no more than 5 outstanding segments.
- Upload over HTTPS using POST or PUT. Do not use byte-range mode; encryption is not supported apart from HTTPS transport.
- HLS disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode. Segment-based HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery.
- The developer guide describes muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC, closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For HDR, it specifies HEVC and 10-bit PQ or HLG with Rec. 2020 color primaries.
These are YouTube HLS requirements and profile details, not settings that should be applied blindly to every MediaLive output. Confirm that the chosen encoder configuration, source, and YouTube stream profile are compatible.

Add MediaPackage only when you need a separate playback origin
If viewers or another downstream client also need a MediaPackage playback endpoint, feed MediaPackage from an upstream encoder using the supported input path for your MediaPackage generation. Create the appropriate origin endpoint, then request and validate its playback manifest separately from YouTube’s ingest status. MediaPackage v2 dynamically packages output when a downstream playback request arrives; it does not replace the encoder’s upload to YouTube.
Keep MediaPackage v2 and legacy instructions separate
Do not combine console steps or endpoint assumptions from different generations. The current MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and outputs documentation describes HLS and CMAF live inputs, AWS Signature Version 4 authorization, channel policy behavior, and TS/HLS or CMAF endpoints. The older legacy MediaPackage live guide describes a different flow, including HLS over WebDAV with digest authentication. Choose the documentation for the actual MediaPackage generation in your account.

Validate each delivery path independently
There are two separate outcomes to check if you use both services:
- YouTube: confirm the Live Control Room preview and status show that YouTube is receiving the HLS stream.
- MediaPackage: request the playback manifest from the origin endpoint and check it with the intended downstream playback client.
A working MediaPackage manifest does not prove that YouTube ingest is working, and a healthy YouTube preview does not verify the MediaPackage playback path. The configuration guidance above describes the documented service roles and requirements; it is not an end-to-end test result for a particular AWS account or YouTube channel.

Troubleshoot common configuration failures
- YouTube receives no stream: confirm that the stream is configured for HLS, that the URL copied from the current Live Control Room setup is being used, and that the MediaLive HLS output group targets it with the required upload method.
- The YouTube preview reports an ingest or format problem: check HTTPS delivery, POST or PUT, TS segments, rolling playlist limits, segment duration, muxing, codec, GOP, frame rate, and audio profile against the selected YouTube HLS setup.
- Latency is higher than expected: HLS is segment-based and YouTube disables Ultra low-latency mode for HLS. A two-second segment example does not make HLS equivalent to continuous low-latency delivery.
- YouTube works but the viewer endpoint does not: check the MediaPackage generation, supported input path, endpoint type, and playback manifest independently.
- Legacy setup instructions do not match the console: verify whether the workflow uses MediaPackage v2 or the older live guide before applying input, authentication, or endpoint steps.
Check content rights and channel policies
Technical ingest compatibility does not grant permission to broadcast the program. Before going live, confirm you have the necessary rights for the video and audio, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streams and channel monetization if those outcomes matter to you. Keep rights and policy checks separate from codec and endpoint troubleshooting: a technically valid stream may still be subject to YouTube’s content or channel decisions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream rather than encode a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a MediaPackage-to-YouTube connector and does not go live from a camera.
