To make Argos CI compare only selected pages, capture screenshots only in the Playwright tests for those routes. If a CI job runs only part of your usual suite, also set ARGOS_SUBSET=true so Argos treats screenshots missing from that run as unrun—not removed. Keep full-suite runs on your main branch for baseline updates: subset builds cannot become baselines.
Choose which pages produce screenshots
For a stable list of pages, limit the tests or screenshot calls to the routes you want Argos to compare. Give each page a stable, unique screenshot name so it maps consistently to its baseline. Argos’s Playwright example uses this route-list pattern for pages such as a homepage, product list, product detail, and contact page (Argos Playwright documentation).
For example, create a test file such as tests/visual/selected-pages.spec.ts:

Register the Argos reporter to upload captures
Tests create the screenshots, but the Argos Playwright reporter is what uploads them for comparison. Register it in playwright.config.ts, following Argos’s current configuration example. Its example conditionally enables the reporter in CI; match that pattern to your environment so local runs do not upload unintentionally (Argos Playwright documentation).
Run just the selected test file when you want a stable, deliberately limited capture set:

npx playwright test tests/visual/selected-pages.spec.tsThis selects the tests to execute. It does not, by itself, declare to Argos that an incomplete run is a subset. Use subset mode when the run omits screenshots that a full run normally produces.
Mark intentionally partial CI runs as subsets
If a feature branch or conditional CI job runs only affected tests, set ARGOS_SUBSET=true in that job. Argos then ignores screenshots missing because their tests did not run and reports changes or additions among the screenshots that did run. The setting is also available as --subset for argos upload or as subset: true in supported SDK upload options. Argos announced subset builds on January 31, 2026, for partial test suites and feature-branch validation (Argos subset builds documentation; announcement).

Subset builds are not eligible to become baselines. Use a full test-suite run on the main branch when you need to create or update the reference set. That preserves the complete baseline rather than replacing it with only the pages included in a partial run (Argos subset builds documentation).

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected comparisons
- Pages you did not want are still compared: Search the executed test suite for other
argosScreenshotcalls. Remove or scope those calls, or run only the intended test file. - Pages omitted by a partial run appear as missing or removed: Add
ARGOS_SUBSET=trueto the CI job that runs only part of the suite. Do not assume runner filtering is automatically recognized as a partial Argos build. - Argos receives no screenshots: Check that the selected tests ran, that each reached
argosScreenshot(page, name), and that the Argos Playwright reporter is registered for the CI run. - A page does not map to the expected baseline: Give it a stable, unique screenshot name and keep that name consistent between runs.
- A subset run did not update the baseline: This is expected. Run the full suite on main to create or update baselines.
