Connect the XBOX Nano Controller, open Xbox Accessories, choose Configure, assign each available control, save the layout to profile Slot 1, 2, or 3, and press the controller’s Profile button to activate it. On Windows 10 or 11, configuration requires a compatible USB-C cable. The exact commands offered for the programmable Action Button and other controls depend on the connected controller’s firmware, the app version, and the platform.
What you need before remapping
Have the controller powered on and connected before opening the Xbox Accessories app. Microsoft lists the XBOX Nano Controller as compatible with button mapping through Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. Windows configuration requires a compatible USB-C cable; console play can use the controller’s supported wireless connection, but a wired connection is also useful when the console or app does not immediately detect the controller.
- XBOX Nano Controller: turn it on and make sure it has enough battery power for the setup.
- Supported platform: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or a Windows 10/11 PC.
- Windows cable: use a compatible USB-C data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Xbox Accessories app: install or update it on the Xbox console or Windows PC.
- Current firmware: if controls or assignments are missing, check for a controller update before concluding that the hardware is defective.
- Target game: know whether you want a standard controller command, a keyboard input, or a shortcut that the game itself must support.
The app’s assignment list is the authoritative list for the Nano connected at that moment. Two platforms, firmware versions, or games can expose different choices, so do not assume that a command visible in one setup must appear in another.

Connect the Nano and open Xbox Accessories
On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
- Power on the XBOX Nano Controller.
- Sign in to the Xbox profile that will use the configuration.
- Open My games & apps, find Xbox Accessories, and launch it. If the app is not installed, get it from the Microsoft Store on the console.
- Wait for the Nano to appear as the connected controller. If more than one controller is listed, select the Nano rather than another gamepad.
On Windows 10 or 11
- Connect the Nano to the PC with a compatible USB-C cable.
- Turn the controller on and close games or other software that might be taking exclusive control of it.
- Launch the Xbox Accessories app from the Start menu or Microsoft Store.
- Select the connected Nano when it appears. If it does not appear, unplug and reconnect the cable, try another USB port, and confirm that the cable carries data.
Wireless play and Windows configuration are separate concerns: the supported USB-C connection is specifically required for configuring the controller on Windows. After saving a profile, you can use the controller according to the connection options supported by your platform and game.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open Configure and choose a profile
- In Xbox Accessories, select the Nano.
- Choose Configure.
- Select New profile to create a layout without changing an existing one, or select an existing profile to edit it.
- Give the profile a recognizable name if the app offers a name field, such as Racing triggers or Keyboard layout.
Profiles let you keep different control schemes on the same controller. The documented Xbox Accessories workflow saves a profile to one of three controller slots: Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3. Saving a configuration is not the same as activating it. After saving, press the physical Profile button on the Nano and select the slot you want before launching or resuming a game.
Remap a standard button
- In the profile editor, select the on-screen button you want to change.
- Open its assignment control and choose the desired primary usage from the commands shown.
- If the editor exposes a shift-mode or secondary assignment for that control, configure it separately. The availability of shift-mode options is determined by the app and firmware.
- Repeat for every button you need to change.
- Save the profile, then assign it to Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3.
- Press the Nano’s Profile button and activate the slot you just saved.
Do not rely on the position of a label alone. Read the destination command shown in the editor, because a remapped control can be easy to confuse with the button that originally occupied that function. The app may also show only assignments supported by the current platform and controller firmware.
Configure the programmable Nano Action Button
The XBOX Nano Controller includes a programmable Action Button. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement confirms that the button can be assigned in Xbox Accessories, but it does not guarantee one universal command list. The choices you see are governed by the app, current firmware, and platform.

- Open the Nano profile in Configure.
- Select the on-screen representation of the programmable Action Button.
- Review the available assignments. Choose a standard controller function, a supported keyboard input, or another command only if it appears in the list.
- If the app offers a primary and shift-mode assignment, set each one intentionally; otherwise, configure the single assignment displayed.
- Save the profile to Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3.
- Press the controller’s Profile button to activate that slot.
If the Action Button is not listed, or the command you expected is absent, update Xbox Accessories and the controller firmware, reconnect the Nano, and check the target platform. An unavailable command is normally a software, firmware, or platform limitation rather than proof that the physical button has failed.
Assign keyboard inputs—and understand game support
Some Xbox Accessories configurations expose keyboard inputs. Those inputs are not automatically accepted by every game. Xbox Wire notes that keyboard-input mapping is game dependent: a title may support keyboard input fully, partially, or not at all.
- Full support: the game recognizes the mapped key or command wherever its keyboard controls are available.
- Partial support: the game accepts some keyboard inputs but ignores others, or accepts them only in particular menus or modes.
- No support: the game ignores the input even though the controller profile saves successfully.
When a keyboard assignment appears to do nothing, first test the controller in Xbox Accessories, then check the game’s own input settings and documentation. A working profile cannot add keyboard support that the game does not provide.

Save, assign, and switch between profiles
Save the edited layout
Use the editor’s Save command after making changes. If the app asks whether to overwrite an existing profile, confirm only after checking that you are editing the intended layout. Save the profile to one of the three available slots so it can be recalled from the controller.
Activate the correct slot
Press the Nano’s physical Profile button and select Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3. Activate the slot before launching the game or returning to a suspended game. If you change profiles while a title is running, the game may not refresh its input state immediately; return to the game’s menu or restart it if necessary.
Use slots as game-specific presets
| Slot | Example use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Slot 1 | Default controller layout | Every important face button and trigger still performs the expected action. |
| Slot 2 | Action Button shortcut layout | The game recognizes the assigned command and does not reserve the button for another function. |
| Slot 3 | Keyboard-assisted or accessibility layout | The platform and game accept the selected keyboard or secondary inputs. |
These are examples, not required assignments. The useful rule is to give each slot a distinct purpose and record which game uses it.

Test the mapping before playing
- With the desired profile active, remain in Xbox Accessories.
- Select the lower-right Beaker icon to open the controller input test.
- Press every remapped control, including the Action Button and any shift-mode combination.
- Confirm that the app reports the intended input rather than the original control.
- Open the target game and repeat a short test in a safe menu, training area, or practice mode.
The Beaker test separates two problems: if the app does not detect the assigned input, the issue is in the connection, profile, firmware, or controller configuration; if the app detects it but the game does not respond, the game’s input support or in-game bindings are the likely limitation.

What standard remapping does—and what to verify on Nano
Xbox Wire’s general explanation of standard-controller remapping describes button swaps: when one standard button is remapped, the corresponding original mapping is swapped rather than simply creating two buttons with the same function. That explanation is useful context, but it is not a guarantee that every Nano control behaves identically. Confirm the actual result in the current Xbox Accessories editor and with the Beaker test.

Troubleshoot missing controls, failed saves, and unresponsive inputs
The Nano does not appear in Xbox Accessories
- Power the controller off and on again.
- On Windows, reconnect with a compatible USB-C data cable and try another USB port.
- Close and reopen Xbox Accessories.
- Disconnect other controllers temporarily so the Nano is easy to identify.
- Install available app and controller-firmware updates, then reconnect.
The Action Button or expected command is missing
- Confirm that you selected the Nano, not another connected controller.
- Update Xbox Accessories and the Nano firmware.
- Check whether you are configuring on Xbox or Windows; the assignment list can differ by platform.
- Use only commands shown by the app. Do not infer that a command is supported because another Xbox controller exposes it.
The profile saved but the old layout is still active
- Press the physical Profile button and select the slot where you saved the profile.
- Check that you edited the intended profile and slot rather than creating a new unsaved layout.
- Return to Xbox Accessories and verify the active slot before reopening the game.
The Beaker test works, but the game ignores the input
- Check the game’s controller and keyboard settings.
- For keyboard assignments, verify that the game supports keyboard input on your platform.
- Look for a conflicting in-game binding or an overlay that captures the same key.
- Test a standard controller assignment to determine whether the problem is specific to keyboard input.
The game behaves incorrectly after switching profiles
- Switch to the intended slot before launching the game.
- If the game was suspended while another profile was active, return to its main menu or restart it so it can read the new input state.
- Use the Beaker test after switching to confirm that the controller, not the game, is reporting the expected mapping.
Physical size and price context
Xbox Wire’s October 14, 2026 launch announcement describes the XBOX Nano Controller as a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces, calling it the company’s smallest controller and lighter and shorter than most modern smartphones. The same announcement gives a $49.99 launch price. Those figures describe the launch announcement and can vary by region, retailer, stock, taxes, or later pricing; they do not change the Xbox Accessories configuration steps.
Recommended remapping workflow
- Decide what problem the remap solves: a hard-to-reach command, an Action Button shortcut, accessibility need, or keyboard-assisted control.
- Connect and power on the Nano; use USB-C on Windows.
- Open Xbox Accessories, select the Nano, and choose Configure.
- Create or edit a profile.
- Assign standard buttons, the programmable Action Button, and any available shift-mode or keyboard inputs.
- Save the profile to Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3.
- Press the Profile button to activate that slot.
- Check every control with the Beaker icon.
- Test in the actual game, paying special attention to keyboard-input support.
- If an assignment is unavailable or fails, update the app and firmware, reconnect, and verify the platform before replacing hardware.
This sequence prevents the most common mistake: editing a profile successfully but continuing to play with a different slot active.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I configure the XBOX Nano Controller wirelessly on Windows?
Microsoft’s compatibility information requires a compatible USB-C cable for Xbox Accessories configuration on Windows 10 and 11. Use the wired connection for setup even if you later play wirelessly where supported.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How many remapping profiles can the Nano store?
Xbox Accessories provides three controller profile slots for this workflow: Slot 1, Slot 2, and Slot 3. Press the Nano’s Profile button to activate the slot you saved.
Why does a keyboard assignment work in Xbox Accessories but not in my game?
The Beaker test confirms that the controller emits the assigned input. The game must separately support keyboard input, and support can be full, partial, or absent.
Will my profile automatically appear on another Xbox console?
No automatic transfer is guaranteed. Verify the Nano’s profile and mappings on the other console before playing.
